Painting Skates (toe box)

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! Awesome forum, and this is my first post.

I'm fairly new to ice hockey and about 3 months ago bought Bauer One.6 LE'S (White version) and have really liked them. The white toe box was a bit much so after much chirping and seeing white whenever I looked down I decided to take matters into my own hands and do what Bauer should have done with these.

I used a basic sharpie and shaded in the toe box so it was black.

I can't imagine the sharpie will be very durable at all, so does anyone have any advice on using a more permanent or durable way to keep the toe box black? I was thinking maybe one of those automotive paint pens.

Thanks!

Nothing I can think of, everything would be surface and would show the white when it gets scratched. But I must say it looks pretty natural.

If anyone figures this out I would probably do it to my mission ac2 s caps.

Also welcome to the forums and happy first post.

Maybe Krylon fusion? It's designed to bond with plastics.

I know there are other things for pigmenting plastics that require heat setting... Since skates are designed to be baked, might work OK.

Once again that will be a surface change, and once that gets hit or even force with use it may crack and chip. I would also think it would have a good sheen to it and not look to natural.

Honestly, if it looks like it does in person as it does in the photo leave it, when mars come up hit it with a sharpie. I mean the puck is black so it will probably leave a black mark you just need to worry about blades stick etc.

True..and it looks exactly like the picture...I guess I'll just buy a 5 pack of sharpies and when need be..touch up. I just couldn't stand the white toe box...hahaha Thanks!

There's an automotive plastic dye called "Forever Black" that has a matte finish and could work for this. I used it on my Volvo and it worked well.

Any auto parts chain store should have it. Vinyl dye could work, too. Both products soak into the plastic so they're quite durable.

You've taken one of the ugliest skates I've ever seen and made it look pretty sweet! Bet it would look even better with a black holder.

I had the same thought, though I'm not sure if that would be going overboard or not. It's definitely an improvement with the black toe box. I'd also second the Forever Black suggestion.

Thanks guys! Well...my skates became damaged..long story..but they're still under warranty and the online hockey store where I bought them is offering store credit or a replacement pair! I'm tempted to get a replacement of the same pair. I personally like them, how they feel, and the look. Then again, reebok white k's don't look half bad.

Any input fellas?

The online store that I have the credit at only has the white LE's.... And I guess I should re-phrase.

White Bauers with black toe cap, or Reebok White K's? Just looking for some input.

If you already have the bauers and like them, just stick with the bauers, looks don't matter as much a performance. Plus reebok is a lot wider than vapors.

I wonder how Bauer ProTecToe would fair on all plastic toe caps. I used that stuff back in the day when the toe cap was wrapped in nylon weave.

That would probably be the best thing to try. With enough coats, that stuff was damn near bulletproof.

I was considering doing some custom painting of my nxgs, I contact Bauer and they wouldn't sell me paint. Think it might be a bit harder of a task than this, anyone ever tried some sort of spray r other common paints on their skates?

Looking good souldriver! And I've heard the protectoe might work too! I have a few ideas when my new white one. 6's show up this week.

Also, I contacted about 12 hockey repair shops to see if I could just get a black toe cap put on, but apparently only one shop claimed to be able to do it, at a cost of $40 per skate and I'd have to provide a black toe cap...ahhh!! Apparently modern skates cannot have the toe caps replaced unless you wanna spend a TON of money ..

I tried the same thing with my one.9s but instead of sharpie I used leather paint. That worked OK, but not great. I found an old can of Pro-tec-toe and it worked like a charm. My only complaint is that it looks a little shiny instead of the matte finish most toe caps have.

Just hit it with a coat of Krylon or similar clear flat enamel.
