Need info on skate sharpener

Recommended Posts

So I recently bought a blademaster skate sharpener at an auction. It's from a store bankruptcy. Can anyone give me an insight into which machine I just purchased or point me in the right direction? I'm assuming it must be an older machine. I never had a chance to look at it in person so I don't know if it will even turn on, but I couldn't pass on it for the price. It also comes with some accessories apparently, in the photo I see a punch, some wheels, and some holders. Also any idea what it would be approximately worth? I really don't need anything this large so I may just end up flipping it if everything works alright then buying myself an x01.

I see a rivet press with some of the tools, looks like the old custom radius system, a couple old wheels. Even in poor condition, it should be worth a couple grand as long as it runs.

Looks like a mess. Unless you got it really cheap like under 1000.00 you won't get to much. Well for the machine at least. Looks to be a lot of parts missing saftey guards dressing arms...are all apart and look to be a mess. I wouldn't pay over to much for everything! The best piece looks to be the rivet machine!

It looks like the dressing arms are in the box o' junk.

It was a local auction so I just need to pick it up, sadly I don't have a place to keep it since I live in an apartment. I may have to store it at my friends until I sell it or move into my new place. One of my coworkers said he may be interested in buying it and I would give him a fair price but I doubt he will offer me much since he knows how little I paid for it.

If that machine works--even with the damaged table top--it's worth a minimum of $2,500. If you put a grand into it to clean it up and get it running in tip top shape, you could get as much as $6000-$8000. Even in non or partially working condition, the least you should accept is $1000-$1500. The UGC 1000 custom radius profiling system brand new costs about $1800, so depending on how well you can clean it up and whether all the parts are there, I would imagine you could easily get around $700 - $800. Between the riveter and the puncher, you're looking at another $400-$500 dollars.

So basically for $250 you got yourself the best deal since the acquisition of Manhattan island by the Dutch. (Okay, that may be a bit of a stretch, but you definitely scored big time.)

Hold on there......if any of those motors don't work there 900 new and a min of 250 to get rewound if you can find someone to do it. The machine itself is in very rough condition. I agree a 1000 would be a good deal if you can get it and would be a fast 750. If you do not know how to do the work I would just sell it. Running up to 20 stores and fixing these things all the time they are not as easy as it looks.

They can be a real pain when that old,

Where are you located?

Blademaster's USA dealer does trade in/buy backs and offers a fair market value. Edmonton is a long way from the Canadian Blademaster but it might be worth checking out. The serial number on the side of the machine will also let you know what year the machine was built.

Found one online here near TO in better shape with the high end Blademaster skate oven and stretcher as well as riveter and boot punch for 4000 obo. I would take the 1000 if you can and be happy!

Oddly enough at the auction they had a skate stretcher and oven combo thing from blade master. No one bid on it, so they are going to try again next auction. I would of bid 25 dollars if I had any possible use for it.

For now I am going to clean it up. Any ideas on what would be the best way to clean the countertop? It's what's in the worse condition, looks like rust or something on it. In the next couple of days ill figure a way to get power to it and see how well it works. Fingers crossed everything is ok. Worst case scenario I should still easily be able to make my money back on just the extra wheels, boot punch, and riveter.

Steel wool or a steel wool type pad along with a chrome polish or stainless steel cleaner has always worked well for me. You may want to look at a drill that can apply and buff it as well...You just have to be even and keep it moving so not to create any uneven spots. A good vacuuming and and really good wipe down with a soft cloth on the rest and see if there is a clean filter anywhere.

I mean you could repaint it but take's a good amount of time to do a good job.

Nice pick up. Is it on a 220 plug or is it split into two 110? Older machines had some wiring issues, I'd make sure there are no shorts anywhere. We used to have a machine where if you put one hand on the table top and the other hand on something else that was metal, it would light you up pretty good. Also, make sure all the exhaust hoses and the fan is clean and in good shape. Before you start it up take the grinding wheels off and make sure the head units are secured. And, if I'm not mistaken, the access panel to the motors is on the back. You should check them out, and make sure the drive belt for the cross grinder isn't dry rotted. Make sure the motors are clean, if the exhaust ever had problems, it's possible dust has a accumulated. Dust covered motors=overheating and a possible short from the metal dust getting into them.

As far as the sleds go, I'd let them sit in WD-40 for a day and replace the felt before I even messed with them. Boot punch looks like its missing a handle, but that's an easy build. If the rivet machine is as old as the sharpener, the gears are probably starting to wear and slip. New gears will cost you the same as a whole new riveter, but a machine shop can fill them with weld and re-grind them for you for much cheaper.

Nice buy for $250 though. If it was mine, I'd gut the entire machine, get the motors wound if needed, and build 2 portables out of it. Maybe even a stand alone Spinner dresser... Ideas. I got 'em.
