where to find cheap netting to hit pucks into

Recommended Posts

So our attic is huge and empty. I recently put a tile board up there to stick handle on, and its pretty sweet. The room is about 30-40 feet long, so I've decided I wanna put some kind of netting or tarp up so i can shoot into it.

Ultimately, Im gonna put a steel goal up there to shoot at, but first I need to get a huge net that would catch my misses. For now I'll just shoot at that "backup" net until I can get the money for a net up there, but I do need something huge and inexpensive to shoot at.

No idea where I would even find a huge net like that. Should i be looking for a net or just a huge tarp? Im guessing the dimensions need to be about 7-8 feet high, and maybe 20 feet wide.

Also, on the subject of goals, im 99% sure my PVC street hockey goal is probably gonna break if I shoot rubber pucks at it, is it cheaper to build my own goal to shoot at? It doesn't even have to be a authentic looking goal, just something metal that will have posts to shoot inside of, that i can attach a net to catch pucks with.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Netting probably looks more fancy, but I have a big somewhat heavy tarp that I bought at home depot that works fine. I just hang it up when I use it, then take it down.

I haven't tried it, but I've heard of people having good success with carpet reminents. I would think a guy could make a goal out of galvenized piping for a few bucks a piece; everthing is dimensional and screws together with elbows.

Tarp or old carpet. Just paint lines or use tape to represent the goal instead of buying the pipe/tube to do it. Red duct tape worked for me.

There is a company called Insta-net, they make a tarp that is the size of a 8' garage door that has a photo of a hockey net with back boards ang glass on it. It's realistic looking, and it is mounted on a retractable roller like a shade so you can store it if you want. It's made to cover garage doors soo they don't get destroyed by pucks. It's pretty cool.

Doesn't actually qualify as cheap, but I bought a 10x20 for my son to use outside. I have a simple pulley system to raise and lower the net, but usually leave it up all the time. Also setup pulleys in the garage as well. It has held up nicely and works well!

Not too bad, looks like the 10x15 heavy duty net would be $110, which I can see myself getting eventually.

I think for now I might pick up something like this:http://www.homedepot.com/p/12-ft-x-16-ft-Heavy-Duty-Tarp-HD1216/202026936#.Uh0NvxtelkA

Does this look solid enough? And should i have it pulled tight, or will am i better off leaving it hanging to absorb more impact?

in addition to the net, im gonna try to build a cheap goal for up there, so the tarp would really only be for misses anyway.

Thanks for the tips everyone!

I wouldn't build your own net/goal, it gets to expensive. Try to find one on Craigslist, that's how I got mine. 4x6 steel with a un ripped net for $40. Put a want to buy ad up for one there. Most people have them tucked away in there garages and don't have the time or energy to list them.

As far as a net to catch run away pucks.

I put this one behind my goal. Works pretty good for the price

I would let it hang and if you find it isn't heavy enough to stop the pucks add some weight to the bottom. You want it moving so the pucks are slowed rather than stopped.

I got mine from this guy:

No complaints! Been using it for a couple of years now. I leave it outside year round in some pretty nasty weather attached to a wire line across my garage so I can slide it back and forth out of the way when it's not in use. It's held up well.

Colin
