Which NHL'ers in Europe are having good years?

Recommended Posts

I have seen McCabe was doing horrible, as were Boucher and Savard.

I saw Horcroff is leading the Swedish league in points. How are other players doing?

I think Nash & Forsberg are doing well

What about the Russian league? How are Kovalchuk and Lecavlier doing?

I can only speak for the (low-end) ones I've seen in the UK...

Steve McKenna's not exactly lighting it up, but he's playing solidly. Apparently he's a great influence in Nottingham's locker room, a great character guy.

Wade Belak...well, apparently he's been solid enough, but the one game I saw him play in, he sucked. Simply playing in a lower level league ain't gonna turn him into some kind of god! He has a decent shot on him, but his skating was poor, he didn't throw many hits, and he didn't inspire confidence in Coventry's "D".

Rob Davison - I've not seen him play yet, but apparently he's been playing pretty well. Throwing his body around, scoring a few points too. Got kicked out last night for beating the living daylights out of somebody who'd just ran one one of his teammates from behind...

Eric Cairns - similar to Belak, but apparently playing well. Still not a great skater, but he's been solid, and a great influence in London's locker room, so I'm told.

Scott Nichol - actually left due to family reasons a few weeks ago, but was apparently pretty good before that. Got thrown out a few times (once was for just hitting somebody so hard it nearly killed them... :lol), and scored a bit.

And last, and definitely least...

Mel Angelstad! - Okay, he only played 2 NHL games, but he's a minor-league legend when it comes to enforcing. Hard as nails, but apparnetly still not particularly good when it comes to anything else!

I wonder why.......?.?....

"just put it on the net it might go in" is not the way to play in RHL. Goalie makes a save and you just give the puck to the opposition. Kovalchuk and Havlat (we'll shoot from anywhere!) do not seem to understand that little nuance ;) Although there is more than that: the entire Kovalchuk's AK Bars side have simply fallen apart once all the NHLers have signed on. Maybe Avangard's way of signing just one superstar (Jagr) and keeping all the togetherness still there is a smarter way. Maybe. B)

In Germany Jochen Hecht is playing a good (but not overly so) season with Mannheim. He had a bad start but is catching up now (24GP 7G 17A 24P for 15th in the league in scoring).

Marco Sturm had a very good start with Ingolstadt (he lead the league in goals for the first weeks of the season) but now he's in a slump (24 11 10 21). Plus now he's sidelined for at least two weeks with chickenpox.

Mike York plays with one of the worst teams (Iserlohn) but still is 2nd in points in the league (25GP 9G 25A 34P).

Stephane Robidas has a solid season with last season's champion Frankfurt (25 7 17 24, not bad at all for a D).

Andy McDonald plays on a line with Sturm for Ingolstadt and makes a solid job (26 10 12 22).

John Tripp (Kings, now Mannheim) sucks beyond believe (20 3 4 7), so does Sean Pronger (25 0 6 6, Vancouver now Frankfurt).

Andy Delmore (27 6 12 18) is ok but Mannheim expected more from him.

I guess that's all I can think of for now. Overall, only Sturm, Hecht, York and Robidas really delivered. It is remarkable that no NHLer made an outstanding impact in the league. If you look at the topscorers (http://www.del.org/statistics/topscorer_15.html) and at the most goals (http://www.del.org/statistics/toptorschuetzen_15.html) you realize that the NHLers are barely among the top players. Some of them do certainly not play anywhere near their 100%.

if the people in manheim had spoken to anyone associated with delmores nhl teams, i dont think they would have been surprised by this.

while i havent really been following him, i thought that zetterberg was tearing it up in sweden. im confident that once the nhl starts up again, he will be a force to be reckoned with.

I heard that there are couple of players from the Rangers top affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack over there. Jamie Lundmark of course just returning from the Italian league, hasnt produced much in my opinion. Fedor Tytuin has gone over to the Russian league to play, and I do not know who the other player is

The other one was Maxim Kondratiev, who went back to Russia with Tyutin for the duration of the lockout. (I think...)

He may be, right up until the playoffs when he disappears.

chadd,

while you are certainly a highly respected member of this board and you know your stuff when it comes to hockey and hockey equipment, i think you are very wrong here.

zetterberg has only been in the league for two seasons and he has gotten significantly better as time has gone on. while datsyuk gets all the attention as a great young red wing, zetterberg would have had nearly as many points last season if he wasnt injured. zetterberg is also younger.

and when it comes to disappearing in the playoffs, zetterberg is not the guilty party. he has played hard in every playoff game hes ever been in and while many of his teammates DO disappear in the playoffs, he certainly does not.

speaking of his play in sweden, here you go:

2004-05 Timra IK SEL 28 12 17 29 18 - 29 points in 28 games is pretty solid.

and last year he had 4 points in 12 playoff games. not bad for your second playoff appearance, especially since the wings were shut out the last two games they played.

He was a non-factor last year in the playoffs. Zetterberg was getting first line minutes and playing in every situation. Elite players produce in the playoffs and I don't consider 1/3 of a point per game producing.

I'd also consider going from .700 points per game to .333 points per game a significant decline.

I can only speak for Sweden, but here's the current top-5 scorers:

1. Peter Forsberg 33 points (11+22, 26 games)

2. Shawn Horcoff 31 points (13+18, 29 games)

3. Brendan Morrison 31 points (13+18, 30 games)

4. Henrik Zetterberg 29 points (12+17, 28 games)

5. Nils Ekman 28 points (14+14, 27 games)

Shawn Horcoff and Daniel Cleary have been playing really well together for Mora, as has the new Slovak line with brothers Marian and Marcel Hossa and Rastislav Pavlikovsky. Mike Knuble, Brendan Morrison and Kristian Huselius is forming a great line in Linköping, and so is Peter Forsberg, Mattias Weinhandl and Per Svartvadet (former Thrashers player) in MoDo.

Daniel Cleary or Clearly is leading the SEL in points (30 pts to Forsberg's 29).

I know this is a little late but I don't think he is...?

Daniel Briere is doing really well, as is Fred Braithwate, who's in the Russian League. Pavel Rosa who played in the AHL last year, and had 88 points. He's up there in the Russian Scoring leaders list.

And, it's not fair to bring up Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Although both were late round steals, zetterberg was expected to pan out. Datsyuk was never expected to do much at all. Plus, Zetterberg was also made to look a lot better due to his time spent on a line with Datsyuk and Hull.

I'm starting to wonder about Hudler. The buzz on him was huge a few years ago, then he really faded. Good to see he recovered from the accident though.

The accident? Are you sure you aren't mistaking him with Grigorenko? So far he hasn't done much after the accident. but I guess thats to be expected. Hudler put up pretty good numbers in the AHL last year, close to one point per game. Not bad for a NA rookie. Anyway, I'd take Kronwall over both of them.

Yeah, it was Grigs in the accident. Hudler waited an extra year to come over. Then again, with all the attention on Crosby for the last year+ there hasn't been much mention of other prospects.

Nash and Thornton both play great. St. Louis hasn`t lived up to the expectations yet. Tanguay has left. Aebischer is only the backup goalie. Heatley is still injured. Brière plays quite well. Jason Blake wasn`t bad too. Olli Jokinnen played very good, but left after a few games. Gonchar, Sykora, Vokoun, Elias, Pillar etc. are currently all in Switzerland for the Spengler Cup.

Here are the current league top scorers:
