new Gloves!

Recommended Posts

UPS driver just brought me a pair of NOS TPS R10 Response gloves in Red/Gold. If I could figure out how to post a pic, I would show them off- they're money!!!! They are a lot lighter than the gloves from back in my day. I wonder how to prevent the stink? Back in my day (and apparently still now), we used the stink as a weapon. These days, I don't want the stink!!! lol

To post a pic upload the file to a site that hosts pictures like imageshack and then post the link. There's a specific "show it off thread" you may want to use.

As for preventing stink - air the gloves out after every game and get them dry as soon as you can. I actually use a boot dryer without heat (as I've read heat can dry out the palms). You could also spray the liner with a peroxide/alcohol mix, but try to avoid spraying that on the palms. Once in a while you can also use shaving cream with lanolin on the palms (look for lanolin in the ingredients - barbasol and the pink skintimate creams come to mind) as that'll both soften up the palms and make them smell better, but you'll need to be able to let them dry for a few days after applying the cream.

Okay- I will try imageshack.

These have digital material on the palms. Reading the custom glove thread, this seems like a good thing.

Thanks for the tips.

All my gloves so far have had a liner that's stitched in near the cuff. I pop/flip that out and let them dry in my basement. It's pretty dry down there and even though I put them on a shelf in my closet, they dry pretty fast and I never had a smell problem.

digital palms have a certain way to take care of them to maximise their life. They are considered performance palms so read up on it.

They have to be better than horse hide!!!! It took so long to break those palms in, then they would SMELL. But they wore like iron. These gloves are definitely softer, for certain.

These say "pro stock", yet they are not made in Canada. I wonder if it was just something TPS put on higher-end gloves?

Lanolin shave cream was mentioned a few times in Google searches; good stuff or recipe for early re-palm? I already know that I want mesh gussets in these when getting them re-palmed...

Duh- in this thread, as well on shaving cream. Must be the gospel, eh?

I've used shaving cream lanolin on my gloves with nothing but positive effects and it was recommended by members of the board that are very knowledgeable about gloves. It's been brought up in several threads throughout the years and I don't recall anyone having negative results - the only thing people complained about was sticky palms when using there gloves before letting them thoroughly dry. You just want to leave time for your gloves to dry out thoroughly before using them after you apply the cream (3+ days is ideal).

Other things you can do to avoid a quick repalm:

Avoid using black tape on the butt end as that'll eat through the palms in no time.

White tape is better than black for the palms, but not as good at Tacki-mac command grips or Oggie grips.

Here's a good thread on the various options that help reduce palm wear: http://www.modsquadhockey.com/forums/index.php/topic/60451-effective-way-to-reduce-wear-on-your-palms/

Cloth Tape is cloth tape. There is no synester element to black that wears more on your palms. The black may cause discoloration that shows up more than white, but there's not a mystery acid or oil that eats palms.

That may be true if the texture is the same on both tapes (although some think the dye in the black tape causes wear...I haven't seen conclusive proof of this though), but in my experience there are more black tapes with a rougher texture.

I used to use black tape on my butt end years ago and wore through palms pretty quickly and then switched to white and experienced longer palm life, but still wore through palms. Now that I use tack-mac and oggie grips my palms last even longer than when I used white tape. That's just my personal experience..

One more stupid shaving cream question: on outside only, inside only or both inside and outside?

I use it on the inside and outside. It doesn't need to be done to new gloves though - just use it when the palms start to get dry and crusty.

My understanding is it's not the colour of the tape but the quality of the glue used. Any tape with toxic glue will eat thru your palms faster than anything else. This is not to say that a crap dye in the tape could also have an effect.

If you can get it, medical cloth tape is the best thing you can use for the butt end. As mentioned earlier, tack-mac and oggie grips are others but if you are using stick tape then Renfrew tape is one of the better ones around.

Gloves don't have the same palms as I had back in the day. These new-fangled palms are a LOT wimpier these days, I take it. I don't want to have to re palm any sooner than i have to...

Skintimate (or Walgreen's house brand comparo) is my option to preserve these bloody things...
