Synergy Skate Problem

Recommended Posts

I recently picked up a pair of Easton Synergy skates for 1/2 price at my LHS. I've skated in them a few times at free skates. They fit my foot extremely well but are too high cut for my preference. So I unlaces them one notch and found that this fixed this problem but created another. My new problem is the big one. Everytime I skate in them, because the area around the top lace eye-hole is so stiff, the edges dig into me and causes enough pain that I can't skate for any more than 5-10 minutes.

I am still able to return the skates and get store credit back, but I'd prefer not to have to do this. Has anyone had the same problems with their skates? Does anyone have any suggestions about how to fix my problem.

I can post pictures if needed.

If the skate doesn't work for you, take it back. Trying to "make it work" is one of the worst things you can do with skates.

The masochist in me says skate with them, enjoy the pain!

Take 'em back - just because they are new, cool, etc. isn't worth the discomfort. Find a pair that works for you.

I don't lace up the top lace either in my vapors for the same reason and greater forward flex i am afforded. I usually wear higher socks and fold them over in the ankle area so i don't get cut up. Also, I somtetimes tape up my ankles and that totally eliminates the problem, have been doing it alot lately. I would recomend trying one of these before returning the skates, however, it just might mean that your synergy skates just weren't made for your foot type.

The problem has nothing to do with his foot type. It's the tops of the boot that are digging into his ankle area. Besides, he said that they fit his foot extremely well.

I have a similar problem. It rubs the outside left ankle only. It rubs it raw. I dont wear socks so what I did was just cut the tops of a sock off and wear those for protection. I hope it breaks in

Sounds like the problem has to do with the skating style not being compatible with the skates. I'd say take them back and look for a skate that fits the foot just as well but with a lower cut.

Thanks for all the imput guys. I think that I will just take them back. What would you guys recomend for a low-cut skate?

Mission S series or one of the Graf models.

I have a pair of nike pro stocks that i bought for 260 or so and they have a ton of forward flex in the tounge. i dont have to unlace them any eyelets and they are really comfy, you might want to try a pair of those out. they are a wider skate though so you might be able to go down a size or a half size

synergy is a great skate but they are very stiff. i got some early and had them taken back and got another pair about a month ago. i had been using 8090 in between, and those are very nice skates as well. the problem with the synergy is the stiffness. i do the same thing youre talking about leaving the top eyelet open, and it does increase forward flex, but doesnt allow your ankle to do much else. after wearing them for this long i do find myself wondering if theyre going to break in...i kinda think not. im pretty sure i was faster in both 8090s and the 705s i had before...almost thinking about going back...but not yet. theyre also really cold your toes freeze in these skates...at least mine do. obviously coil technology isnt a miracle pill for slow skaters, but i wouldnt go putting these head and shoulders above other skates unless they are a perfect fit. they are insanely comfy and require no break in time for comfort, but make sure you arent someone who prefers silly puddy wrapped around your ankle for a skate, these definately do not fit that description. also ridiculously light, but thats more something youll feel in your hand than it is something youll notice in performance...you still have to do the skating yourself...

Honestly, if they fit your foot type and are very comfortable inside the boot, I wouldn't return them. It's one thing if the boot is too small or if you're getting blisters on your ankle, or if the boot isn't wide enough for your foot or something along those lines, but a little bit of pain because the boot is cut too high is something you can easily overcome by using a little bit of moleskin and eventually it will become so routine you won't even have to worry about it.

i have found that problem when i skate barefoot in my 8090's, and i don't know if it applies to you, but by adding a layer (such as really thin socks) between skin and the top of the boot really helps cut down the friction and i don't have that problem anymore, you might want to try it with your synergys

Try a piece of duct tape on your problem blister areas.

I was having a problem with my Pure Fly's rubbing the sides of my big toes raw. I started wrapping a narrow strip of duct tape around my toes and no more problem. ;)

My Pure Flys rubbed a spot on the outsid eof one of my ankles. I just put a bandaid and some tape over the spot for about 4 or 5 games and the problem went away.

Fit can mean a lot of things...fit and pain go hand in hand. If you have pain, move on to something else that fits and has NO pain.

Pure Flys can be heat fit and will mold...from what I've seen of Synergy Skates is that they can't be heat fit and therefore will remain pretty much the same shape of their life...
