APX Steel Replacement

Recommended Posts

Can anyone suggest a good replacement steel for my APX's?

Not a fan of the fusion steel on my APX skates. Was thinking of replacing them. I generally like the profile of the skate. Was thinking maybe step steel or Blackedge?

Would appreciate any help.

I have read through the Blackedge forum. I guess one of my concerns is the profiling. I have never had it done. Overtime with my APX I got use to them (they have been sharpened dozens of times now). If I bought the Blackedge ones, is there anything I would need to do? Would I need the profile changed to match the stock APX runners?

I have Blackedges on my APX skate. Im happy with that decision. I feel I can get an extra skate or two out of them before my next re-sharpen. Also find a little more confidence in getting deeper in corners. Could be placebo, but for the extra 20$ it cost me to put them on, no complaints!

Why so cheap? I can only find these for $120 in Canada. And if I have to get them profiled, that's even more money...

I found out that I can get step steel for $30 or Blackedge for $120. Do people find Blackedge that much better?

Where can you get step for $30? I paid close to $90 for mine + profiling. PM me, much appreciated.

Keep in mind that the Fusion runners have a 9" Radius and Step has a 10" radius.

Keep in mind Hockey Shop's prices don't include sharpening or installation either and it's $30 per side.

Ahhh $30 per runner. That makes more sense. It's odd that they list the Blackedge for $120; which is for a pair of runners. Still $60 vs $120...

I may just stick with the 10" radius and see how it plays. I came from Grafs and find I am a little less stable on my APX's sometimes.

Blackedge is worth every extra penny you are paying. Better edges, more speed, less nicking, scratches and casual lost edges, and less trips to the sharpener. Will pay for themselves in short time.

May be a stupid question, can you use a Miraclestone on the Blackedge runners? I assume no, since in the other thread it said not to use a hone. Miraclestone is just a better grit?

I always find I can get a few extra skates at least by honing... at least with regular steel.

No you can't use any stones of any grit, it will remove the coating. You won't need to extend intervals anymore with these, you'll get more skates between sharpenings anyway.

Step steel is the way I would go. Skated on them at first and thought I would never get use to it. After a half hour I knew I wasn't going back its a great product with awsome results performance wise. Plus hold an edge for a while.

Just my opinion

I ended up going with Step Steel. After over a dozen skates, only regret is I should have done it sooner.
