Wide boots.

My brother-in-law is getting in to playing pick-up and mens rec leagues. He has yet to own a pair of ice skates, but the 3 different rinks and their 3 different types of rental skates, all have hurt his feet, and the sides of his feet were all red and swolen afterwards, he tried several skate sizes of each. My question is, what skate/company offers a wide, economically sound skate, he is looking to spend no more than $50-$60 on a pair of new skates. And what suggestions can you supply on how to avoid the blisters and swelling up of the foot? He's not a lean guy, but he's not chubby either, he's a well-built, buff guy. Any feedback is apprized.

I've only ever had one blister from skates, that's because they didn't fit properly. Wearing socks, seems to help as well. You'll have a hard time finding a skate in that price range, good luck.

Maybe a used pair of graf 609's? The price is a bit of a difficult factor. Maybe get a pair of CCM's and have them widened if they are hurting his feet still?

With the $50-60 price range, his best bet would be ebay. You could probably pick up a used pair of CCM 652's for that price and those boots are pretty wide.

Hey all

I have an $85 gift certificate at my local FSZ sitting around here collecting dust.  I am in no need of new equipment and have enough sticks to last the rest of my career.  Unfortunatley, they expire within a few months.  Anyone looking for any equipment, let me know the specifics.  Can retail and sell for $149.99, I'll put the $85 towards it and keep the cash which is more useful going towards actually playing to me.  The local FSZ has a nice selection of equipment, with a lot to choose from.  They have a few Pro-Stock OPS as well, Johnsons Synergy, 2 Roenick Grip Synergies, and a Gagne Vector.  Just let me know, thanks for helping in advance.

Still have this. If so, maybe this and the $50 your brother-in-law is willing to spend might get him something that fits his feet? Just a thought.

I actually have thought about skates for his birthday coming up, we'll have to see what he does and/or how my stick situation is. I remember reading articles in the past from the Sunday Paper, having ads from Dicks and Sports Authority, with Bauer or CCM skates for $49.99 or so, wasn't sure if they were in the wide foot as well. "D" is the wide width, right?

I see, thanks. Is EE extra wide? E and D widths are a universal standard, all brands?

No most brands use D as their normal, and EE as their wide. Not many have E widely available, but you can get them somehow. I think they are just special order.

Seems like Nike is quite popular amongst you wide footers, have to let him know to try those out. 8D to a 6EE, wow.

Nah, it's wider.

I can't put on a D.

Graf needs to start putting wide toeboxes on their wides...they keep the regular toecap. Look at it...the boot is wide and tapers into the toecap.
