Ohio High School state championship ends in a tie?

I think this is bs, for the players, and an embarrassment for Ohio high school hockey. Honestly a tie? In the state championship game? You can't let kids play 7 ot periods and then come out and tell then that they both won. You can only have one champion.

on the other hand the the one goalie had a hell of a game, 78 saves!!!!

Michigan did it a few years ago. Game went 8 OT's. It's more of a safety call than not wanting to let them play it out.

This seemed a little weird to me when I read it the other day. I guess I understand the safety argument but I think if I was on one of the teams I would be pretty disappointed in the tie.

I don't have a problem with this as the decision was made based on the safety of the high school players. They commented during the NBC game yesterday that several players on both teams were cramping up. Why wait for something bad to happen.

It's friggin hockey... What, they call the game so they don't cramp?

Actually, from what I've heard from the Sylvania people is that OHSAA just didnt' want to pay all the overtime costs they were incurring. The OTs were only 8 min long, so, it was a long game, but not like 7 x 20 min OTs... Jeezus Keerist, player safety??? C'mon. Even the Sylvania people were pissed. They felt their goalie would win the game for them and the St Ignatius people were probably pissed because they figure sooner or later, you outshoot a team 3-1, something's going to go in. Player safety though.... a load of crap, at least as an excuse.

Heck, I'd be more concerned about my kids safety at the pond hockey tournament we did two weeks ago on Lake Huron in windchills of -20 F.

Shootouts aren't in the rule book for high school hockey nationwide so they couldn't do that.

I guess I'm saying there should be a change to the rules.

No reason to end a game like that in a tie, just doesn't make any sense at all.

Totally agree with all of this. I live in Ohio and I did not hear anything about OT costs being assessed. I'm sure there were plenty of 3rd and 4th liners who were not fatigued at all. These are two big programs with deep benches. I live in Ignatiusville and everyone is pretty pissed. I'm sure it's the same for the Northview community.

Apparently Michigan has a rule that games cannot be played on Sunday. The game was started on a Sat night and the next OT would have gone beyond midnight. We called it quits at like 7pm.

Thank goodness they didn't screw the kids out of playing hockey, in favor of a skills competition just so they could get it over with, like the pros.

I was on the 4th line in HS hockey. We were never "gassed except at practice". I agree with the person above play it out with 3rd and 4th line. HS state champ game should not be a tie. 4th line rules and that is a fact. Any other 4th liners out there agree?

Shootout would have been better than ending it in a tie. A tie is like kissing your sister. Even my beer league does a shootout, at least there's a winner.

I don't like a tie, either, but at least they got to it by playing hockey.

If a kid cramps at the wrong time then he is head first into the boards or suddenluy in a vulnerable position where he can't protect himself. I'd rather see a tie than a kid messed up because some purist can't accept a tie.

Tie at state no way. Play it out the next day sudden death. Purist you got that part right. No way would the purists in MN allow a tie.

Any time anyone steps on the cite there are risks. Kids in HS hockey are in incredible shape from heavy training. I would bet third and 4th line were not "gassed". If there is truly a concern wait two days but play it to a win. Don't need a big rink or a lot of cash.

High school sports rules usually don't allow overlapping seasons and have strict rules on length of seasons. They probably didn't have another day to play with.
