Stickhandling oddity

Recommended Posts

Reminiscing about my old collge roller hockey days and I remembered playing against a kid who held his stick with both palms facing inwards.

Basically his top hand was holding the stick correctly, as taught, and his bottom hand was holding the stick so his thumb would be "pointing" towards the butt end of the stick and his palm facing in.

Weird part is, he was a slick puck handler and smooth passer. Solid shot too.

We asked him why he held his stick like that and he said no one taught him otherwise and he just went w/ it.

Thought I'd share :P

Anybody else see anything like this or somebody playing oddly?

no idea but honestly, his shots were pretty crisp. no flutter and fast enough to have minimal dip.

We couldn not stop staring at this guy during warmups  :P

I saw similar thing in baseball where the kid batter right handed, but held the bat like a lefty. This hockey version seems like it'd be even more difficult, except I can see his cross checks being more effective. <_<

Yeah, his wrists are crossed over. I used to do that when I was a kid.

When I was this 10 I was in this golf tournement and this girl held her hands backwards and I was wanting to leave because she took 10 swings to hit it and when she did it went like 2 yards.

When I 1st started hockey I was unaware that there were LH and RH sticks :(

My 1st stick was a righty and I used that for awhile and of course I was used to playing right handed. Then about 6 months down the line it's time to get a new stick and after I got it I realized that it was curved differently then my other stick... lol, this one was a lefty. So then I started playing Left Handed and I have been ever since... But I'm still a pretty decent righty ;)

that's awesome :D, i knew a guy who didn't realise the difference too, he was a righty, but he and his dad didn't realize there was a difference, so he shows up to a game with a lefty stick, and realized "hey, i can't shoot with this thing!, it's curved the wrong way". funny thing is, the stick was a banana and perfect for backhanders, so he'd fly across the crease and roof a backhander, he scored 2 goals that game,.

I heard that Ty Cobb used to swing the bat with his hands spread apart at least 6 inches.

Yup, this is true. I tried batting like that a few times and it was almost impossible to get any sort of snap in my wrists and had virtually no power.

Here's a pic of Ty Cobb's weird batting stance that you were talking about: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/p_cobb0.jpg

I played against a fellow that had his hand cut off in an accident. He used his prosthetic device attached to his fore-arm and glued into the top of his stick/ shaft. It was always attached to his stick. Walking out of the arena with this device hanging from the top of his stick... His bottom hand was fine. He was an average player, but I always had a great deal of respect for him being able to get out and play. Made a point not to treat him any differently though - he still got whacked!

It did look strange to see him skating down the ice with nothing coming out of his jersey sleeve but the shaft of his stick!

There is a guy in the one league around here who has a loop at the top of his shaft that he inserts his arm into. His arm ends just above where his elbow would be but he has an excellent shot and passes well. In fact, one of the guys on our team got deked by him and we never let him hear the end of it.
