37.5 Technology in hockey

Recommended Posts

I've watched many youtube videos and read a few reviews about what 37.5 is and what it does... But does it actually work in hockey gear? I need a new jock and I saw that Bauer offers a full compression jock with 37.5 in it, but it's pretty pricey. I know they also have it in the liners of many of their new gear. I called HM to inquire about it, and the sales guy said it was awesome. The stuff is insanely high priced ($50-60 compared to $20-30 for jocks) compared to regular wicking material products.

Does it really help you perform better and actually keep you dry?

does it help me "perform" better, probably not that much, but it does seem to work better than any other wicking material I have used to keep me dry and comfortable. I just wish they had a compression top in Short Sleeve =). I have the premium jock and premium top, and some of the socks as well. If you have the money, its worth it, but yes it is expensive. Also note that the cup that comes with the Premium jock definitely is not premium, unfortunately.

Thanks for the reply. Yep it's pricey... 20% through hockeymonkey right now at least takes a little of the sting off.

I have a pretty nice cup left over from my Shock Doctor jock that recently ripped beyond repair, so I should be okay there.

Do you think a full legging compression jock will be too hot? I play outdoors 2 out of my 3 games per week, so that's why I am considering going that route, otherwise I'd grab just the short leged jock.

I couldn't help you there, I have never used full leg jocks, and was even hesitant to use the long sleeve top =)

I use the premium Bauer Jock and it's awesome. Game improver, doubt it. Comfort level yes. I like that the straps don't ride into my calf and I don't have a drip of sweat on my skin after pulling it off. Reminds me of wearing a rash guard while scuba diving. Also I used to use a sock garter belt, so the integration of the Velcro wad a huge add as well for me.

Thanks all!

I've never used long leg or sleeve stuff during hockey, but I've noticed my white gear is absolutely getting gross and turning yellow, etc from sweat. I figure long sleeve will help prevent further addition of stank added to my gear, and keep me dryer all over.

Just worry about over heating wearing that stuff indoors. Glad to hear it actually works though.

Does anyone know if the jock pants stretch or shrink over time? I feel like I am in between XL and XXL.

I wear an XXL short sleeve top- it works. Definitely keeps me cool, and thus want to grab a pair of jock pants. My shirt has stayed same size, but I am not tugging on it like I would a pair of jock pants.

I tried wearing a rash guard under my hockey gear, didn't work well for me.

Chadd,

They were designed for scuba diving and coming into contact with fire coral and sharp edges. Your type of rash requires medical attention, not a material intervention.

lol, all of my wicking stuff was in the laundry and I figured, "what the hell" and grabbed one of my rash guards out of my dive bag. I have antibiotics for the other stuff

Under Armour also uses the 37.5 technology in their 'Combine' line of products.

I think it makes a difference. I find myself significantly cooler on the ice in 37.5 base layer than even Bauer's lineup from a couple years ago.

As far as long pants: conventional wisdom would dictate that more layers = less cool. But when you're talking moisture wicking base layers I think its a very different story. The more skin you can cover up the better. I started wearing long pants and shirts when I started playing goal and I don't think I'd go back. I still wear short sleeves and jock shorts when I skate out, but I'm seriously considering switching to at least the long pants.

Like Stewie said, I wish they made the 37.5 shirts in short sleeve. And the only reason I haven't started wearing long pants to skate out yet is because the Bauer premium jock shorts (from last year at least) fit REALLY well. They have no back thigh straps and just hold the cup really well to the body. The long pants seem to all use the straps and a more floating cup.

you can use the 37.5 training shirt as a short sleeve base layer I think, but it wont have any compression or compression fit if that's what you want. It also feels a bit different, so I went with the long sleeve premium. I have good fit with my RBZ elbows and don't really utilize the rubbery grip portion of the sleeves and would just like to go short sleeve.

I've been wearing the Bauer Elite Performance jock for a few months now. The 37.5 liner is great and it is marginally more comfortable than my Easton Synergy compression jock I was wearing before. I didn't buy the Bauer because of the liner, I bought it for the extra padding that it provided. Also, compared to the Easton, the Bauer jock is of much higher quality in general, you can tell by the velcro tabs. The cup in the Bauer is terrible so I swapped the older synergy cup in there and it's much better now.

Optimus, click that UA link provided above. They have 37.5 compression short sleeve shirts. I'm definitely going to get one for roller hockey and probably a few of the loose fit ones for my regular gym activities.

Plan on ordering full legging w jock tonight, and the compression long sleeve. Going to cost a pretty penny, but sounds like it's actually worth it.

I wear a Short Sleeve padded shirt with 37.5; love it:

Maybe you want pure S/S minus the pads. I just wanted the rib protection, as my CL shouldies offer zero rib protection.

I bought one of the short sleeved training shirts. While it did a good job of keeping sweat off my skin, the whole shirt took longer to dry than other shirts I've used (Nike combat dri-fit shirts).

Random question: Do you guys wear underwear under jock shorts? Does it make a difference in terms of sweat wicking/drying? How often do you guys wash your stuff?

No definitely nothing under it. Wash all my hockey gear after every game.

nothing under. I was my under layers after every skate and air dry them, and I spray my gear with vinegar/water after every skate and let it air dry as well, washing it every few months, but the need for washing my gear has been significantly reduced since I bought my RBZ stuff. now that the wintery weather is upon us, my gear dries super quick as I put it in the boiler room in my house on a large rack that I bought off amazon, in the summer I have a dehumidifier and fan method.

Just skated in the 37.5 full leggings on sunday, outdoors in about 45 degree weather (roller hockey).

Crazy to say, but after the game I was completely dry from the waste down, but still a bit wet and sweaty up top (used traditional under armor wicking shirt). So.. I'm a believer. Ordered a 37.5 compression shirt.

I'm wearing Bauer 37.5 leggings and non-37.5 Bauer long sleeve shirts when playing goal. The difference between them is massive, imo. My legs are dry, my shirt is soaked. Ordering the 37.5 shirt right meow.
