Shin guard recommendation

Recommended Posts

You gotta try them on and I'm willing to be since you are new that after a few months when you have figured out what you like and don't like you will be replacing a bunch of your gear. So in other words don't spend too much just yet as you will not be facing 100 MPH slapshots and getting knocked down by a crushing defender just yet.

I skated with them yesterday for about 75 minutes of drills and practice and they fit great, stayed put, and didn't even seem to be there which I think is ideal.

IMO the two hardest pieces of gear to shop for are shins and elbows. Shins never fit true until you put skates and socks on and skate a bit. Elbows, you need to shoot in them to really know how they feel.

anyone hear anything about the Easton Synergy 80 shins? I'm torn between those and the Vapor X100...what do you guys think? they are both around the same price...

Beginners fall and have more accidental collissions. I always recommend more protection, especially for knees, elbows, and hips/tailbones. You're not only learning how to play but also how to fall.

I've had various bauer shins over the years (both vapor and supreme) and every one of them ended up with cracked knee caps. It could be something with how they are built or most likely how I fall or something, so I switched to Reebok, got the 9k and they've been awesome. I'm a big fan of reebok protective gear in general. Like others said no need to go top of the line at all, just get some mid range shins. Reeboks are very good.

I've had the easton Makos, Reebok 20ks and the Bauer APX2s all in the past year as i have been searching for the best pad for me.

First off APX 2's are junk. Leave them alone.

The makos are very light and offer alot of freedom. I stopped using them because i took a shot in the shin that gave me a wicked bone bruise. So the weight and maneuverability is at a cost of protection. Just because it's a brand's "top-end" shin guard does not mean you're getting pro-level protection. If you are in lower level mens league C and below they are totally fine. Once you get into B and A there are some guys with pretty hard shots. I do not recommend these in those situations, especially if you play D.

Now for the 20ks. Honestly cant be happier with them. There's a reason why they are rarely sold at a discount. Just solid, well made shin guard. After you take off some of the extra pieces they are not that heavy. At first i noticed them as being a little more bulky but after wearing them for a while i dont even know they are there. There is a break-in period for them. Once they start to mold to your legs a bit they feel great. I've heard people complaining about the straps and frankly i've had no issues with them. The calf straps are pretty much not needed as the knee strap is very secure IMO. I have 9K girdle so i also remove the top piece of padding above the cap. This is probably one of the best things about these shins; the are easy to customize and adjust.

For badkarma, the question you need to ask yourself is how much is it worth to protect my elbows and knees? You will fall and it will hurt, but the level of pain is dependant on how good your protection is. All I can say is that I have helped a few beginners into top end Rbk gear and the thanks I have got from them after they have taken a couple of falls proved it was worth every cent they spent.

And kingofnooyork, +1 for your comments. I've tried and played in every top end shin / elbow from all major brands and I always return to Rbk. Aside from durability, it's hard to beat something that is built like a tank for protection.

I've got the Easton Syergy HSX shinguards and they're fantastic. I just ordered a pair of HSX Elbow pads as well since my Bauer vapor x5.0's broke a strap and its really annoying to have to deal with taping that all the time.

Sparky1,

Im on the fence with the Synergy 80s...what do you think between the Reebok 18ks and the Synergy 80s...I am going to stay at the price point right below the top of the line because I am a poor grad student...LOL

I honestly don't have any expereince with the Reebok 18k's, but from what I remember, the Synergy 80's have all the features of the HSX minus the 3d liner that wicks moisture away, so it should be nearly identical to mine.

All I can say is the HSX's are very comfortable for me, they move nicely with my legs and i've taken a couple of shots off of them with no issue.

A lot of my team mates have the Reebok 20k's and seem to like them though if that says anything.

Try them both on if you can and see which one you like, I dont think you can go wrong with either of them.

This is all great information and timely, as it is time for new shins for my son.

Right now the choice has currently been narrowed down between the CCM RBZ and Reebok 20K. Any comments regarding the calf protection (from slashing) on either?

I have the RBZ shins. there is a gap in the back that isnt covered by the wrap around u-foams, but i dont take much abuse there and it hasnt harmed me yet. other than that, I cant say enough good about the protection, weight, and fit thusfar, very happy with my purchase.

so I finally made my decision...placed the order today and when the mail arrives next week I will be the owner of CCM RBZs. With all things considered, fit, features, aesthetics, and weight, these were the best choice for me. Ill keep you guys posted.

Received rbz130s for Xmas. Light weight with decent protection.

Yep. Have a dozen hours or so on mine now. I love em.

seems like everyone leaned toward the RBZs...lol...I actually was gonna go RBK 18k, but at the last minute I saw a bunch of players in the World Juniors using what looked like new RBZ equipment...after further research it seems like a lot of pro players use it as well...then I made a game time decision and got them...

for me, putting it on was one of the few times I made an impulse purchase on an item. It was just super comfy, light, everything I needed. I had purchased the CL before and hated them, sold them almost immediately. Apparently, for me, they made all the right changes.
