equipment you bought that ended up being "unnecessary"?

Once had a coach asking me while getting on the ice with mites why I don't wear a helmet. Said I'm usually not skating or doing anything crazy, hadn't had an incident in 8 years of coaching. 30 seconds later a little kid wiped out behind me and took my legs out from under me. Bounced the back of my head off the ice. I now have a helmet with a visor I wear when coaching on the ice.

Helmets are mandatory for coaches in both Canada and the US now, no?

It's always interesting how many people think checking is the only reason to wear certain protective equipment...

Well everyone knows that neither the puck, other players' sticks, the ice, and the walls are not hard and thus incidental/ unintentional contact from any of these factors, could not injure someone. (sarcasm)

I think life is full of poorly calculated risks. Even with pads, playing hockey with checking is far more dangerous game. For some of us that transitioned from that game to no-check men's league, some pads start to feel unnecessary. I can't tell you how much better it felt when I shed my shoulder pads. I think its worth the risk.

I won't give up my cage though. So, I'll throw out my visor as being unnecessary equipment. I bought it thinking I would transition to it. But, it seems too risky to me. YMMV.

Similar here, I didn't wears shins or elbows until after I got taken out by kids.

For USA Hockey helmets are required for coaching. This was a local Learn to Skate program and high school operates under NJSIAA rules, so before my incident I never wore a helmet since I'd never had a need for one.
