Cleaning Your Helmet

Recommended Posts

Hey folks, I wanted to see what people thought/suggested about cleaning your helmets.

I use a Bauer with a full cage, and lately after games I've been waking up with my forehead breaking out like I'm a 13 year old trying to hide his boner with his backpack. It's insane.

Any recommendations for cleaning your helmets? I've tried Febreze. I've tried wiping it out with baby wipes. I've tried using a wet soapy rag. No use. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Baby shampoo - in case you don't rinse it all out, it won't burn your eyes. I've soaked it overnight in soapy water. If you can control the temperature on a dishwasher to only be warm, put in for a cycle to power wash it with no soap. Be sure to cancel the heat on the dry cycle. You can also get a skull cap.

Cleaning the helmet didnt help me out very much but cleaning my forehead with some acne cleaning stuff every day helped instead ;-) (32yr old)

Start using some type of face wash that contains salicylic acid. That should help get the grime off your face and help prevent the breakouts. Stay away from benzoyl peroxide if your acne's not really severe. That stuff will dry your skin out and stain your clothing. For the helmet, I'm not really sure. It depends on what type of foam is inside. I have an Easton E700 so I just take the foam out after every game and rinse it out. BTW, if you have any more questions about skin stuff, just PM me. I've tried basically everything on the market, lol. (21 yr old who now has clear skin)

You can also get a skull cap.

as a bald guy, i find the skull cap to work the best keeping excess sweat off your forehead and out of your eyeshttp://www.missionathletecare.com/products/enduracool-instant-cooling-helmet-liners? i have two with me at all times. there's been games where i'll need to switch out by the start on the third period. i guess, as someone with hair, you may want to pull it back before putting the skull cap of. its been so long since i've had hair, i only remember having to pull my hair back before putting my helmet on.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I use a daily face wash already which for the most part keeps my face clear and in good condition, but again, for whatever reason, the morning after games my forehead is a disaster zone. I'm going to try the baby shampoo soak/rinse and see if that gets down to the nitty gritty of it all first.

Thanks again gang!

I use a Rocket Dryer to dry my gear after every game (I play 3-4 times a week), and then on the first weekend of the month, I give my gear a soak in OxyClean for a few hours and then dry it off in the Rocket Dryer.. Sounds like you have bacterial growth in your helmet, and probably other gear.. be sure to sanitize it as much as you can! I don't find doing this breaks down any of the foams etc..

I spray my helmet and all my equipment with a solution of 1 part 90% rubbing alcohol & 1 part water. This is the same ingredients as Febreeze without the scent. It's probably more powerful than Febreeze too based on the amount of alcohol used.

Mine gets washed every 2-3 months in HOT water and Simple Green. I rinse my helmet with fresh water, but the other gear just drips and air-dries. Usually timed for the last good weather weekend of the season so it can air dry outside on my deck.

I hang my gear to dry on a big metal rack with a fan under it. It's usually 99% dry overnight.

When my helmet starts getting funky, I give it a hot water rinse in the shower and let it air dry.

RickDC, that worries me, though I don't think any of my other gear is as bad. I'm going to try packing some crumpled newspaper into the rest of my gear over Christmas break.

Good idea. I'll be off the ice for 12 days (yikes!) so it's time to give it a wash now while it has time to dry.

Newspaper works great to help the gear dry, but if you have that much time...give it a bath.
