Heat Guns

Recommended Posts

What is the heat range I should be looking for when i'm buying a heat gun? Most of the hobby-grade heat guns that you can get from a place like www.towerhobbies.com go up to 400*F while heat guns from places like Home Depot go from 750-1000*F... 750 being the minimum it puts out.

Also, if anyone has a recommendation for any particular heat gun and where to buy it, i'd love to hear it :).

I don't have a brand/model recommendation, but the glue flows at less than 400 *F. I would recommend getting a heat gun with adjustable temperature settings. I use mine for both blade replacement and curving.

Mine is a Home Depot bought heat gun. Has a high and a low. I use high all the time. It's really all about how far off the stick you use it and how long you leave it in one spot. Just keep it about 4-6" away and keep it moving and you will have no problems. It will never get hotter that a torch so there are no worries about damaging the stick "all of a sudden".

I have some Old Milwaukee at home and not sure what the temps are on it but if I had it at high I could burn a cat.

I use some wicked industrial one my dad brought home from work for stripping paint. It has a huge plug like you use for your dryer/welder, and it frequently resets the breaker if you have it turned up, it's pretty intense. The lowest setting on it is 1000 degrees, and that's what I usually use. Havn't damaged any shafts, so it works ok.

I have a Milwaukee I picked up at home depot for about $25. Temp range is 750-1000, low setting is enough to get the job done.

Thanks guys.

I just picked up a Hobbico heat gun from my local hobby shop tonight, it only cost 14 bucks and got the job done very well. It's also got a cool setting so you can immediately heat the shaft and blade up, pop the blade in, then set it on cool and let everything set.

Here is the one I bought: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXL498&P=7

The cool setting is so that you do not damage the heat gun by going from extremely hot to off.

I have a Master Heat Gun in the shop. It's an industrial one. Chadd has one too...

Shouldn't Old Milwaukee be kept cold? Not that it matters, it's shit anyway...

Oh you always have to have some Beast around. I thought that's what its name was because it just has "aukee" with the lightning bolt on it.

Isn't it the same thing? I just remember getting "mystery beer" in a cup, then someone saying it was the Beast. I need to go back to undergrad.

Nope, Old Milwaukee and Milwaukee's Best are two different beers.

Haha, I had Old Milwaukee the other night, not horrible considering i paid $1.50 for a 40. Also had my first brass monkey, not nearly as bad as it might sound.
