So I found my stick I used in college...

Recommended Posts

Come tax return time I plan on buying a new one piece stick. I'm "that guy who still uses the wood".

anyway, I came across a stick I used in college and was a total sniper with. I really love the blade, and would love to find the same pattern. Its a Jofa blade, mid curve, round toe. I don't know if i would consider it an open toe, or a very open toe. It says 10 degree loft where it butts against the shaft. I haven't measured the depth of the curve yet.

Wondering if anyone could put a name to this blade pattern? I've been eyeballing the STX Surgeon 500

It looks to me like a Mid Curve...Although it starts in the heel, the curve progresses throughout. So I do not think its a lidstrom

I recommend looking at

Midcurve - Bauer P88(Kane), Sherwood PP88, CCM/RBK P40(Hossa/Mackinnon), Warrior W88(Zetterburg), True MC

you can also look at

Midcurve with some open toe - Bauer P14 (Toews), Warrior W14 (Chara)

MidCurve (big Hook) - Sherwood PP77 (coffey), CCM/RBK P46 (Landeskog/Bergeron), Warrior W71 (Pacioretty)

You will need to look at actual sticks. Many companies provide a comparison between their curves and other makes, but they are not all totally identical.

My Favorite curve is an old Warrior Smyth curve and the closes curve to that is a P46, but that is unavailable in a Blade, so I have to settle for Kane/Zetterburg/Hossa.

I didi buy a ops with a P46 and its nice, but a little more open than I like and I keep seeing P46 that I do look right, but the one I got is more open...maybe I have a Bergeron, since its Reebok stick???

Probably worth noting that the 88/40/MC are all neutrally faced pretty much.

I would say at this point going up to a Total Hockey that has an area for you to try out sticks and just find a pattern you like.

You're not likely going to find a square toe ever though.

I've always leaned towards the Coffey curves. Rounded toe is fine.

What sucks is that my area no longer has a LHS. We have Dick's, Play It Again, and the local "pro shops" which IMO are only there to pass out rental skates.

Did you go to your 10th college reunion? !! Just kidding but that pattern blade is about 12-15 years old. Coffey curve is really deep though. Good luck in your search..

this site used to link a 2004 Jofa catalog. I have it on a system...Your blade is older than 2004...they don't show your blade type - Clear Wood blade (they had 4 blades)

But on this list of Sticks and blades they have the following

9500 Composite (solid graphite) & 8055 Fiber blades (Wood Neck, Synthetic core and grahite blade)

-Heel Curve - H.Sedin (sim to a pm9)

-Mid Curve - D.sedin (sim to a p88)

5500 Wood Blades (but painted either Navy or Red)

-Mid Curve - MS (no curve shown, but a more squared toe)

X-Mid Curve - IW (no curve shown, but has a rounded toe)

That stick is probably from around '99-'00 season. Old, but still works like new.

What would be the difference between mid curve and X mid curve?

I also looked at a catalog from 1997 from Koho, Jofa, Canadien, Heaton (Karhu under blasts from the past) . They do not list any sticks from Jofa at this time, BUT with the Titan line they do show the ASD logo more commonly seen with Jofa protection. But they don't list the specifics on their curves (its sorta confusing)

I cannot tell exactly...the X-mid curve is only available on the 5500 series...so I think it differentiates the Toe shape (in elevation). So "X" indicates a rounded toe (red blade) vs the Navy which is more squared but eased corners (not a true square toe)

The loft COULD be the amount that the toe is open. If neutral is 0*, 10* could be the angle when it has been opened...BUT I really have no idea. Are you sold on going into one piece sticks or looking at the option of 2 pieces?

Look at either the Bauer p14 Toews or the Warrior W14 Chara.

OOOPS and Sherwood has the PP14 Plekannec available in the T120, T100 & T90 (not available in the Rekker Line-up)

Im going one piece. Been talking to TRUE via emails and their Lindstrom pattern is called the HCS.

I also just weeded through a pile of old junk blades I kept and came across an Yzerman that was "similar"

Loved the Yzerman curve, a little flat on the sole. the P88 Kane/W88Ztterburg appear to be my best options of matching that for blades today. True has the MC (mid-curve)

Note: the P88 wood blade does not have the same amount of curvature as the composite blade. The warrior Kovalchuck is very neutral and I have seen various version of the Coffey since they are now importing the wood blades.

Many blades today have a straight blade until the mid to toe before doing much curvature. The Warrior W71 is similar to the CCM P46, except that the CCM has more curvature in the heel.

I ended up buying a STX Surgeon RX 85 flex, X88 mid curve open toe.

I played with it a little bit yesterday on a pond.(no skates) It definitely has a different feel to it that using a wood stick. My first impression was "this feels fake" I hope the transition isn't that hard for me. I ended up cutting it down 2"

The puck seemed to pop off the blade while stick handling. Maybe double wrap it? I use white tape...

I struggled with the same issue when I switched to composite blades. I use a fairly sticky blade wax (Mr Zog's), which helped. If you were a sniper in college, I'd bet you'll be able to adjust to the composite by using it and sticking to it for a few games.
