Looking for a shaft and blade!

Recommended Posts

Hello all! I'm new here :)

I'm looking for a shaft to use on Ice... I've been playing for about 4 months now, and chose to get a shaft because sticks here are very expensive indeed (I live in Hong Kong)

As my brother who lives in Toronto is coming back here soon, I've been thinking of asking him to bring a shaft back...

Let me tell you a bit about myself first...

I'm 5'7 aged 15, shooting right, weighing in at about 150-160 pounds.

I currently don't do very much slap shots at all, but I'd like to have the option to...

I'm using a Easton Z-Carbon stick with a Modano curve... I like the feel of it, though the stick's too heavy...

My question is... what shaft would you guys recommend? I'm looking to spend no more than $60USD (I guess 70 would be alright...) for a shaft that would last me quite a long time (function wise, appearance doesn't really matter much)

Also, where can I get it for the cheapest?

Thanks in advanced!!

Jeff

I'm going to say Ultra Lite 85 flex (if its in your price range). Regular Flex TPS Tri-Core if it is not (these should be on closeout). I believe theres a few close-out stores in Toronto (Nationals and Sports Chek?) Which may have the best selection for the price range you quoted.

I believe www.thehockeyshop.com has "SMU" or "special make up" Innovative shafts for 39.99 US.

Standard shaft, 295 grams, come in a 260 flex or 90ish on the easton scale.

If your your brother could get you a couple of those, you might like them.

They're rumored to be painted over Novius', Hespelers or Innovative 1100's.

Otherwise, I second the Ultra Lite.

I´d also go for the Ultra Lite. I used to have 3 of them when they initally came out and they lasted for over two years. Don´t know if they have significantly changed their production process since then (other than they are slightly concave now imo)

I guess im gonna be the first to say this, but take a look at a TPS Rubber. I have a 90 flex and it is perfect for me( 6 foot 1, 160 lbs) .I have a Si-core Modano blade in it and it WILL help your slapper. Also if your lucky you will find it for a good price I got mine for 50 bucks(Epuck.com). Ultra lites are good also

I'll say Easton Ultra Lite with 85 Flex as well, but your brother is not going to be able to find one in Toronto for U$70...not in any stores at least.

They typically go for C$120 + taxes ($138 total). Even with the occasional 25% discount, an UL will still cost over C$100 ~ U$83-U$85.

Just curious...since when did hockey catch on in HK? :P

Wow... the UL does seem popular in here!

It's a little too expensive though... add in all the shipping costs and I'd end up with a stick that I feel is too expensive for my current skill level... It's quite hard to justify, really.

(Looking at the Ultra Lite for $75 on ePuck.com as I write this :(...)

How are the Easton Typhoon, Bauer Vapor VII or CCM Vector 100s? Are they good for the price? If I get one of those shafts, I would feel better about experimenting with different curves to find the one I like, since all I have tried is the Modano on my Z-Carbon (It cost me $50USD here in Hong Kong!!)

Oh yes, and is the Fedorov Innovative going for $40 here any good?

Thank you all for your help again!!

Not too long ago, actually... 4-5 years?

There's quite a few leagues too, surprisingly... The one i play in has a pretty amusing website address...

I'd highly recommend your friend hits the phone books and looks into the clearance outlets that carry hockey equipment then. I think thats where you'll get the most bang for your buck.

not gonna lie the 85 flex synthesis is good for me and im 5'5 130 ...inno novius is a decent stick too not bad for the price

Still way too high for his price range though.

I think I will try out the Inno Fedorov shafts... probably get two, in case I break one... or I can sell them here if I'm unhappy with them! I'll probably get twice the money I paid for them back :P

Now the question is... which blade?

I'm happy with stick handling from a Modano, but I can't seem to lift the puck very much with wirst shots... haven't really tried any slappers yet though.

Can anyone recommend a brand and model of a blade as well as a pattern? (I'm trying to spend as little money as possible here... no real budget as such, so long as the price is justifiable, considering I'm a novice...)

Thank you again!!!

Take shaft flex into consideration if you're not already doing so. You don't want to end up with something too stiff for your height, weight and strength. I'm similar in size to yourself and find 75-85 flex (on the Easton scale) works for me. Too stiff and your slap shots and wrist shots may suffer.

Ballistik makes decent composite blades/shafts for the money and they are quite a bit less expensive than the major brands.

Also, the Nike Apollo Quest composite blade (black w/orange graphics) is a good deal at around $30 US.

Iginla may be a good curve but it isn't widely available if at all on the blades in your price range. I would say the Nike Apollo Quest composite blade is the one you should look at if you prefer composite. Perhaps a PM6 curve would be good for you.

Hmm... I think I'll go for the Easton "Pro Hybrid Fusion" on ePuck... Probably get a Sakic and a Modano and see which I like more!

Thank you, everyone for helping me out!

(Kovalchuk, who's that in your avatar? :P)
