Skatescribe profile, anyone skating on?

What quad profiles were they on, specifically? The quads are a little aggressive and require quite a bit of athletic balance. They're not for everyone.

What exactly is a 981/Quad hybrid, anyway?

Got a set of profiled steel en route courtesy of Paluce. Boy went from stock to Quads early this year and took to them immediately. He’s coming from a Quad 2 to Hybrid so I’ll do write up after some time on ice.

Nice.

I spoke to the good folks over at Tydan and they're going to cook me up a Quad XS/Zero hybrid.

The Skatescribe Gold Profile is really nice fast and Agile Profile. Probably my favourite from them.  (12’ heal, 14’ Center, 8.65’ toe.)  My boy tried it out of curiosity and he liked it a lot, but went back to his previous profile which was a ME Quad/981 hybrid. Other boys on his team also tried it and liked it.

What hollow did your kid and his buddies like the gold at? Mine just tried the gold , straight ahead was fast but he didn't like the crossovers....felt like he was going to wipe everytime he crossed over....

He was on a 92/75 FBV.
It’s a year later now and he skates on the 981/Quad Hybrid (CompetitiveEdgeHockey.ca) and a 98/50 FBV.    His edge work is top notch so he can skate on a /50cut now.   So fast.

Just had SkateScribes powercut done this weekend and really enjoy skating on it, to be fair, the guys at SkateScribe said that I had to adjust the hollow to a shallower cut when getting the profile, which i did. I am now on a quest to figure out how to get the rest of my runners done.

IIRC you had a really short profile.  The Powercut would have more contact area, so that's why we suggested a shallower hollow.

Shoot us an email and we'll set you up with a UPS label.  service@skatescribe.com.

Thank you for stopping by!

I went with the powercut. I did not adjust to a shallower hollow so it took some time to adjust. It felt very good on the ice at MLG. Skated the other day on a harder ice surface and noticed a lot more outside edge glide, but everything was still good. Due for a sharpen so I plan to run it on my Sparx for 1-2 cycles and will see how that goes next week.

Thanks to Nick and team for the profiling/sharpen and advice. I like the how the computer visually shows how parts of the blade need correction. I've recommended the product to those I play with, so hopefully a few of them swing by to get their corrections done.

You guys find the hollow for skatescribe a bit interesting? The edges don't feel as sharp as traditional sharpenings (by touching with your fingers/fingernail). But also if you look closely you can see faint horizontal lines on the hollow which traditionally on regular hand sharpenings is considered a no no.  But skating on it feels completely fine.

I know it's a completely different method of sharpening so traditional rules don't really apply.

What does this mean? What computer?

When you put your blades into the jig on a Skatescribe machine, the vision system measures, draws, and shows a line trace of the profile for each blade on a computer screen. You can see how much steel will be removed and in what areas when it is getting profiled/sharpened.

The machine was off last weekend so my son was actually on a Gold p5.....he was pitched way too much, couldn't stop or turn but was lightning straight ahead.  Got the pitch put down to 0 and he doesnt have the same jump he had previously......doesn't make sense to me , he was on Gold straight out of the box so wouldnt the zero pitch gold i just put on it be the same ?

Find a pitch that he likes and try and stick with it. P1-4 is where I usually like setting my pitch for different people. P5 is getting pretty extreme in my opinion.

Any change in Pitch will take a bit to get acclimated. The change from P5 to P0 will be very different / strange for the skater the first couple times out.

Keep in mind if you’re going from a pitch of P5 to a pitch of P0, you’re taking off almost 1mm of steel at the heal, So you’re not going to get many sharpenings out of your blades. You should get at least 50-100 sharpenings out of a set of blades.

The skatescribe scanner was misaligned so I asked for a P2 and got a p5.....lol

So I decided to go back to just a standard gold and he looks like hes lost a step.....is way better backwards though! Lol

May be time to try a Quad Hybrid.....do you have 230 Powerfly steel?

I do.  I stock Bladetech steel in Black DLC, Mirror polished, and Gold for the powerfly holder.   It’s great steel. Sharpens really well. The steel has a High chromium content so it never rusts even if you put your skates away wet. (Great for kids)

Both my kids were on Quads prior to going to the 981/Quad Hybrid.  Never looked back.  I skate on this profile myself now for beer league 🙂We did a blind test with 5 other boys on his AAA team, and 3 tier 1 girls. All 8 kids preferred the 981/Quad Hybrid over the Quad which they were on previously and moved to that profile.  The speed is noticeable, but they still have all the agility of the Quad.     Some did mail in profiling, others just bought new blades from CompetitiveEdgeHockey.ca It’s a great profile!

I navigated over to this site. Correct me if I'm wrong, the 981/Quad Hybrid appears to be a modified old school Hudson?

No, not close at all. The profile is continuously variable from the glide surface. That is 16 foot slowly tapers down as you move along the length of a blade to the toe.  That is more like an ellipse than anything else. But with a shorter Glide surface.

It is the max edge, 981 and an Omni Quad morphed together in CAD. That is what the quad hybrid is. But also designed for each size blade. Smaller sizes. Have shorter glide surfaces. Longer blades have longer glide surfaces.

Ah gotcha. Ya I did not like the Ellipse whatsoever, tbh.

I went to Tydan and was told that the Skatescribe Gold is a renamed version of the 981/Quad Hybrid but is the exact same profile. I'm a little skeptical but got the Gold done anyways on my boys' skates. They skated on them over the weekend and seem to like them, but need more time on them. Can anyone here confirm that Skatescribe Gold is indeed the same as 981/Quad Hybrid?

No, it is not the same. 100% untrue.  You got sold the closest thing they had. I truly hope they are not promoting this and selling it as you said.

Gold Profile is:

12’ heal - 14’ Center - 8.65 toe

Quad Hybrid  is a profile that I morphed the 981 and the OMNI Quad in CAD to have the same amount of rocker as a quad, but with a glide surface in the middle for speed that came from the 981  (or CAG) but a lot shorter.

It has a 16’ glide surface (not 14’) and it is about 1/2” the length compared to the Gold profile.
The toe tapers from the 16’ quickly down to 12’ then slowly tapers to the toe where it is 7’   It’s not a fixed radius so the radius slowly changes or  “tapers down”.

The heal tapers from the 16’ to 12’ then tapers to 13’ at the back.  CompetitiveEdgeHockey.ca is where you can see a picture showing the real 981Quad hybrid profile.

Unfortunately, I am sorry to say that they are 100%, most definitely lying 😞 I even have an email from Tydan where they replied "Yes" to my question "Is Gold the same as 981/Quad Hybrid?". However, they aren't selling or advertising the Gold as a 981/Quad Hybrid; it was actually me who sent them an email through their website asking if they do 981/Quad Hybrid, to which they simply replied "Yes". I then went to the location in Mississauga and asked for it and the guy working there had no clue what it was. That's when he called someone else who told him that it's the Gold. That's when I sent my second email asking for confirmation that they are the same and got the "Yes, correct" reply.

Is there somewhere in GTA West where I can get the 981/Quad Hybrid profile in person? If not, I will just let the boys continue skating on the Gold and see if they are happy with it. My older son (13yo) went from a Quad Zero to Skatescribe Gold. The younger son (10yo) went from Zuperior S to Skatescribe Power Cut to Skatescribe Gold.

Sad they lie about their work to bring in more business.  I’m going to give Tyler a call myself.

To get the 981Quad Hybrid profile you can mail them to me in Windsor (LaSalle Ontario) CompetitiveEdgeHockey.ca  or at LaSalle Skate Shop inside the Vollmer arena in LaSalle

I do a bunch of Profile design for Blackstone and used to help Skatescribe out with some work.  I did all their surface finish analysis that was presented at the NHL equipment managers conference over the last 2 years.

Would be wonderful if you and Tyler can figure some kind of partnership out and get the 981 Quad Hybrid profile programmed into their Skatescribe software 🙂

My issue with mailing them out is the delay in getting them back; what are my kids going to do in the meantime? They're each on the ice 4-5 times a week and there isn't much time in their schedule for me to mail them out and wait for them to come back 😞 This is why I was looking for something local that could do it on the spot in GTA west.

Gold: 12-14-8.65 toe

powercut: 10’ - 10.75blend - 12.5center-10.75blend - 10’

Atomic K - that one they don’t advertise but I can say it is non conventional at the toe to promote good acceleration.

gold / powercut/ apex is on their Instagram.
