Tape Troubles

Recommended Posts

This year I have been using Andover black hockey tape for the blades of my stick. After much peeling and frustration, I am fed up with this tape and am looking to change. Not only does this tape peel off the face of the blade, but it doesn't peel cleanly off the blade leaving gooey streaks behind.

Any recommendations on tape that will last more than a beer league game or half a pick up game? I use either Dr. Zogs or Top Shelf wax, depending on what my LHS has in stock. Perhaps I've been using bad batches of tape all year, but something must be done. I've noticed that epuck.com has "pro cloth tape" by Renfrew. Is there actually a pro tape, and if so, is it more adhesive and durable? Any good ideas on tape?

Marz sent me a sample of comp-o and I really like it. Normally I'm lucky to get a game out of a tape job but I got 4 games out of comp-o. Sportstape and renfrew don't last more than a game, jaybird isn't bad but Comp-o really works for me.

I'll find out who my rep is at the show, maybe I'll get a few cases.

I really want to try some but buying small stuff on online shops is a rip off on shipping for Canadians. :(

Chadd, please do and let me know. Why do they call it comp-o-stick? Is it for composite blades? Seems like a strange name for tape.

That's the brand name, you would have to ask them why they chose it.

don't know about online, but the hockey giant in Anaheim sells comp-o-stick tape . I didn't see any other brands at the time, but I have bought tape from them in the past that was crappy no name stuff.

I must admit the Comp-O-Stik tape is the BEST I've used wear-wise, however, what I didn't like about it was the texture. I still prefer the soft feel of Sportstape.

What was it about the texture of the comp-o-stick that you didn't like? I've always linked feel with the blade. I suppose if I had to choose between durability and feel in a tape I would go with durability. After having to retape my stick after every time I'm on the ice, yes, I would go with durability.

The Sportstape is very soft - it almost feels layered. (They specifically designed it to work with composite blades, which are hard) It is stronger than most tapes on the market, but Comp-o-stik blew everyone out of the water in terms of wear. I'm on my third game with the same tape job.

Your assumption is correct. That is exactly what it is named for.

Renfrew, I cannot stand Renfrew. Doesn't last worth crap, and the edges of it always fray and the tape comes apart.

I'm interested in trying out the Comp-O tape. Right now I'm using Sportstape and Andover. I like them both, but I can never get more than one session out of them.

Now that I actually think about it, this stuff is pretty durable. I've gotten two inline games, an on the pond session and a 2 hour long ice pick up out of my current tape job, and it looks fine.
