BEST GOALIE PADS!

Recommended Posts

I hate to say it but....Vaughn Velocity's!

I know they are overpriced and Vaughn is making a buttload of money off every set they sell. However. There is no other pad on the market that functions EXACTLY like a Velo. There are a lot of close seconds but no other could be considered to be the best.

Trust me when I say I've tried a lot of 'em and inspected closely even more.

Now, that's not to say the Velo is perfect. There are still two areas which need to be addressed even there.

1) The thigh board is only secured by a small patch of leather in the center of the leg channel rather than being laced all the way across. This does allow the potential for a errant 5 hole shot to bend back the thigh board and slip past.

2) The standard thigh rise is way too small. Possibly the shortest of any serious profly pad. You need at least a +2 thigh rise to nicely cover the 5 hole.

Other mods I'd like to see:

1) Change the bulky square outer roll to either a triangular outer roll or better yet a half height outer roll like on the CCM Gatekeeper.

2) Nicer graphixs. Let's face it, Vaughn pads have never been as striking as say a Brians Beast or the new RBK's. They're kinda bland.

And yes. Though I currently do not have a pair of Velo's. I will be ordering another set for next season. Anyone looking for some like new CCM Gatekeeper Pro pads?.... :D

I thought the best pair are the ones with the huge 5 hole... they are hard to come by but when you find em you'll know...

As long as my goalie doesnt use them....

Best pad out there right now is the pad that feels the best on your leg and works for you when you are playing. I've had success with Velocity, Vapor 2's and the most with the new RBK pads. Not so much with the 590 and Gatekeeper. It all comes down to what you like in a pad, your genetics (flexibility) and how you play your game.

There is no other pad on the market that functions EXACTLY like a Velo.

What about Smith pads? The Velo's were designed by Pete Smith, and the Smith line of pads are basically Velo's with some minor enhancements.

I still have to stick to my guns on this one. While you are correct, Pete Smith did design these pads for Vaughn and is an quite and equipment genius. His closest pad is the SP1000.

It does feature all of the same little things that make the Vaughn my personal pic but where it does stray is:

1) The outer roll on the Smith pad is fused. It does not have the two open joints to facilitate 5 hole closure as easily as the Vaughn.

2) Smith uses 1 thick knee stack. Vaughn uses three thin ones. With the Smith you only have one choice, in or out. With the Vaughn you can use any combination to achieve just the right height.

Then the SP2000 is a flat faced pad, The SP3000 uses a one piece outer roll and thick knee lift, The SP4000 could change my mind with the combination of the adjustable thigh rise and slider toe. It could become my new favourite but I'd have to really try 'em out to say for sure....and they aren't really on the market just yet.

Again I have to say there are a LOT of close seconds out there but I don't think anyone tops the velo... But that is just my opinion. And this whole post is all about hearing everyone's opinion. :P

Arent we all forgetting about Brians? I love the A-Maxx(new Altramax) and the old Altramax (discontinued). Obviously a great quality pad, and as far as graphics go, no one can top brians because they will make any graphic you want, any way you want.

How is a pad "huge." Just because Garth Snow wheres them and their enormous doesn't mean the pad itself is huge. It's the size the person that the person wears them has it.

Everyone I know with demons is at about 34+2, they seem big, but they're no different than most pads people wear. Though, there has always been something about Brians pads that looked "bigger" to me.

Ok...so I didn't wait till next season. Something came up. A set of pro return Vaughns actually. :D

My Gatekeepers "were" 34 +1. I say were because they sold right away. Colours as shown.

My Vaughns are 34 +3. Very intimidating! :o I can't believe how many times I've been asked if they are legal already. (they are) I just couldn't resist the "Trevor Kidd" graphic.

Since the pic I now have the matching trapper and a colour matched TPS blocker. Still need to order my Vaughn blocker.
