Whats stiffer ? CCM VECTOR PRO or SYNERGY skates

Here's an advantage; If you're an ankle bender, you don't look quite as bad since the boot makes up for lack of strength.

Bingo. The stiffness give you more responce and less give in the skates. This gives you a nice snap in your stride with a greater energy transfer from your push in your leg to the push on the ice. The stiffness makes the skate all around easier to use, like stopping, crossing over and such. Imagine a loose skate like the old converse all stars. Would you rather use that or a pair of Nikes in order to play basketball or street hockey.

Stiffness around the foot is a good thing, stiffness high in the ankle does more harm than good.

Overall stiffness in the skate would severely LIMIT mobility. Especially in the ankle area. Your stride would be cut way short if your skate is too stiff in the ankle. Try playing basketball in a cast...

I went from 98 Bauer T4's to 04 Nike Roller Daddys about 10 months ago. I go back to the Bauers sometimes when crosstraining and I have to say the Nike's feel far more nimble. It feels like theres a crap load more of control. Guys In my team even commented that my stops, turning and general straight away skating improved imensely. The extra stiffness I feel has definately helped.

I could see someone make the argument that stiffness might offer more protection (i.e., hard plastic/composite stiffener might offer more protection against taking a shot in the foot).

I seem to recall Paul Kariya having a custom boot built because he got hit in the foot all the time (kept breaking a bone or something). Tickling the memory.... but can't quite pull that one in.....

Like most things, there is a balance to be acheived.

Too stiff and you limit mobility and make yourself prone to lacebite -- which isn't good.

Too flexible and you limit energy transfer to the blade.

Right in the middle equals the best of both worlds!

Heavy guys tend no need stiffer skates so they don't breakdown as quickly. Light weights (like me) want something with more flexibility so I can be mobile.

Then add on a healthy dose of personal preference and you've found what's best for you.

But in my experience, many people get too much skate (i.e. pro stiffness) for their ability.

Cheers,

JJ

CCM is doing that with the new Tacks skates, there are EPP sections in the side to reduce impact on the foot.
