Skates

Recommended Posts

I have a question for all the mods and members that have owned alot of skates. Which brand have you seen to have the best quality out of the box. My son needs new skates and I hear horror stories about Graf and Bauer, just wondering if I should look at a different brand.

Your kid will prob outgrow most skates before durability becomes a problem. Some manufacturers have problems with quality, Bauer, Graf for example, but not on every skate or model. If you check the skate over well, buy from a reputable LHS, you should be OK with just about any brand.

As for adults who want a skate to last a while, The Vapors don't seem to be holding up. The problem being, the demand for lightness has created durability issues.

I know we should get what fits best, but with all the trouble Grafs been having, which skate would fit closest to the 703? Outgrowing them is not an issue, his feet havent grown in 2 years.(Size 11 skate)

The Missions have been very consistant for me and the normal D width is probably closest to a 703. The ability to change the pitch has helped me get a lot of former Graf guys into the S series. The price and quality really kills the Grafs. I also like the direction CCM seems to be going this year. I haven't seen enough of the 2005 stuff to say for sure. I'm also not familiar with their prices or sizing on the new models.

Based on the reviews on this board, the Bauer 8090 held up good and were also great preforming skates.

Quick question: How stiff are they compared to the Bauer XXX?

Can you even change the pitch on the lowest S model the S200?

You can change the pitch of any model skate with a properly done rocker radius.

Sorry I meant if they had the adjustable pitch holder for their lowest model the s200.

Definitely awesome skates right out of the box and they are stiff. One of the few times I didn't experience pain while skating in them for the first time. They're also pretty light and based on the reviews here are comparable to vapor xx's but I don't know about the xxx's.

Are the Mission ice significantly better than their inline? I found the inlines to be comfy, but very soft making it difficult to take a hard step without the boot wanting to fold on me and roll my ankle. I'm looking for ice gear right now, as I have always played inline, and was wondering if Mission's ice line might be suitable, or if they get soft quickly

Yeah, ive recently bought a pair or 8090's and they were excellent out ouf the box for comfort, also they are a stiffer skate than the vapor XX's. IMO. But they are a great skate, with what feels like bullet proof side panels, ive taken many shots off there and i could barely feel it.

They fit very differently, chances are that both skates will not fit properly.

I believe the only thing the new Tacks took from the Rbk/Vector line is the CCM E-Blade. The rest of the Tack is just further evolution of the Tack line.

well the design is out of the ''tradionnal tack''...

the outsole is not the same(it had plastic)...

the new skate lock(might be the only thing about this skate!)

the boot is a lower-profile(in my opinions) than the 02/04

the stabilizater edge is off(the white thing with a black ''buttons'' near the ankle)

The tongue is different...

The holder is different too...(but i use t,blade so i don't really care about it...but doesnt the E-blade was the Externo Holder??(and suppose to be extremily heavy)

and they might have other few changes

For me...since i'm 3 yr old i'm skating with tacks...it a big change for me...and i don't really like this change...(i'm currenctly using 1152('02) with t'blades)

But lolllll some will love this new improvent!!!!maybe some, who never figure to buy tack skate in his life will be in love with them!!

And for a top-end skate...they are pretty heavy...and when i'm buying a 600$ skate...i whant them to be comfy, LIGHT...and if it possible to be a good-looking skates...and i think Nike can offer all these 3 things...

P.S: I know it not important to be a good-looking skate since the 1152 are not a really beauty....but i tihnk these 05 tack are even worse than the 1152!

All I can tell you is from what I've heard the S300 (mid-line skate) is only available in a E width and above.

i wear bauer 8000's and they fit well but its just that one of my feet is like a half size bigger than the other so one is kind of looser. The real problem i have with the skates is the blades, i hate the lightspeeds, im thinking about T'blades

I would have a shop order your skates customized so they both fit properly. That said, the S series should fit pretty similarly to your bauers, maybe a hair wider. I've never used a holder that is more solid and stable than my pitch holders. Far better than the lightspeed in my opinion.

...If you're thinking about going with Grafs, I would suggest staying in the 7xx line. I haven't heard of many DURABILITY issues with them (service, however, has been poor of late). I've had outsole issues with both of my pairs of G-35s (I believe my review on them has been posted...). I love the fit of the skates, I love the performance of the boots, the T'blades are great, but the move from the plastic to the carbon outsole has been, thus far, an unsuccessful one.
