Changing lies

Recommended Posts

Hey, i am recently switching from a 6 lie to a 5, and am constantly shooting near the toe area.....How long will it take me to get used to the lower lie?

Part of getting use to different lies, for me, comes down to where I put my bottom had when I shoot. With my Modano blade the lower hand is higher on the shaft vs a Drury type of pattern.

How much you cut your stick and how low you skate to the ice will also effect this adjustment period.

Hell I am to the point if my stick is 1/4 of an inch longer than the norm its just wrong.

got a rounded bottom on the blade??? if so, then you DON'T have a true lie 5 or 5.5 or 6. yes, there is a difference in the lies in the sticks, but they are not what is stated on the stick. how tall are you??? how long of a stick do you use??? those will determine what lie you SHOULD use.

I find I need to change the plug in my sticks half an inch when I go from a 5 to a 5.5 lie. You may need to use a longer stick.

I had to handle the stick a little differently when I switched from a 5 lie to 6, even though the shaft with the 6 lie is shorter....my shooting mechanics have to change from stick to stick too....I guess its different from people to people

any time you switch from a 5 to a 6, there should be a difference. the problem is that if you are only 5 foot 8, you should never use a lie 6. but the problem is, and i will say this again, you're sticks are not true lie sticks. so yes, there is a difference between the lies, but they are NOT what is stated on the stick 99 out of 100 times.

I thought it depended on your skating style not your height

both come into play...

check out this website, so see what TRUE LIES are.

Is it the same curve? If it is, not too long. If it is a different curve, you are looking at two changes.

I have a question about lie/stick length that is confusing me.

Personal preference aside, often, you will read something along the lines, "Players who like using a longer stick or like to handle the puck further out in front of him would benefit from a lower lie to keep the blade flat on the ice. Players who like to use a shorter stick and handle the puck close to the body would benefit from a stick with a higher number lie. Very often, forwards like to use a stick with a higher lie in order to quickly stickhandle and dance around defenders; On the other hand, a defenseman who likes to poke check may want a stick with a lower lie in order to take advantage of a longer stick."

That being said, Crosby, who is known for using a shorter stick, explained to Ron MacLean (CBC) that he uses a 4.5 lie?!

Again, personal preference aside, doesn't that go against the notion of shorter stick/higher lie? Can someone explain/clarify?

Crosby skates really low to the ice, and he's already not that tall, so the angle of his stick to the ice is going to be lower, hence the lower lie. I also find how "closed" you hold the blade when stickhandling makes a difference, as I tend to close up my P88 so it plays closer to a 5.5 lie than a 6.
