RBK 8k helmet

Recommended Posts

Just picked up this helmet yesterday. My initial impressions where its lightweight ness, and lack of padding. The inside of the helmet is made up of these thin little sticky pads, much like that of those swedish memory foams. The ones where you push it and your finger impression stays for a bit. It didnt look very comfortable at first, but when I wore it on the ice, it is just as comfortable as my ol' bauer 4000. The tackiness of the pads really help keep the helmet in place. Never once did the helmet fall down or tip up. I didnt really notice the helmet either because of its weight....When i turned my head sharply, I didnt have to worry about the helmet wobbling or anything. One feature that didnt impress me too much was that microdial on the back. All it does is move these two plastic bands in the helmet which are "supposed" to stabalize it in the back of the head. The problem is that the dial only moves like 4-5 clicks and the bands are so flimsy; but thats my opinion. Also, the visor/cage holes are really far forward like I expected in a CCM helmet. putting on my oakley visor was damn near impossible with the stock holes and once i did get it on it stuck out really far in front. 4 New holes later it's now perfect. Great helmet if you need a new lid but very $$$

If you got any ?'s just give me a shout.

I have a medium helmet, so i had to REALLLY curve the visor in order to screw it in. PUshing the visor as deep in as i could, there was still like and 1.5 inch gap at the top of the visor to the helmet.

Get some plastic washers to use as spacers. that's one of the reasons I really like the itech visors, they come standard with the visor. You may need to get a longer screw as well but it's worth the $3 you'll spend at Lowe's or Home Depot.

BTW am I allowed to remove those HECC stickers on the back? or will it void it in any way?

I don't think it will be voided in anyway. I wouldn't see why not.

well, didn't you drill new holes in the helmet anyway? if so, i wouldn't be concerned about the stickers :]

Technically, it's not certified without the sticker.

Interesting. You would think they would iron that out, especially with the fact that they distribute Oakley.

You would think so. I tried to fit an Oakley 1/2 on one the other day, it really did look like it was sticking out too much. I also would have had to use a lot of spacers. The itech HX-50 fit so much better. That's what the customer ended up with.

BTW, came back a couple of days later and told me he loves the helmet. Said the ventilation is awesome. Personally, I don't think there will be any durability problems with the stabilizers. While they may look flimsy, they are made out of ABS plastic. SHould hold up well.

does anyone see problems using the holes for J clips for a cage? Would it prove a problem if you took a punch or shot to the cage.

I put two cages on them, no problem. J-clips fit fine

I was very surprised and impressed with the weight of the helmet. On TV and in print it looks very bulky but that did not seem to be the case.

How does this helmet comapre to the Bauer 8000 (fit, weight, etc.)?

i'd imagine the 8k is much much lighter, but the 8000 has more adjustment possibilities, so if your head does not fit perfectly to start with, you could probably tweak the helmet to fit better.

I think the helmet adjustments on the 8000 are better......cause you can adjust them on the fly right? THe rbk helmet is a little hard to tighten when its on your head . The ventilation is great....but the weight is what really sets it apart.....

damn...200 bucks on a helmet and then I cracked my stealth during a scrim.....made it a very costly night for me.

You don't have to adjust it every time you put it on, just set it and forget it. Unless of course you get a puffed up hair style. :-)

Where are you paying $200 for a helmet? The new RBK helmet is going for $129 here in NH.

maybe he's talking about canadian dollars.

Are people sure that the 8000 is light? The way it sounded and looks make it seem like double "protection" of a 5000 with double the weight.

At the current exchange rate, $200 CDN is $160 US, still a bit high for that helmet. I just think some stores are adding a premium because it's new, if one shops around can find it for less.

Jimmy - I think you guys are correct about the Canadian $ vs. US $ - I should have thought about it. The place I saw it for $129 is the local shop we use. The larger chain in this area is charging $150. At the local shop he had already sold four when we looked at it - the first thing I notices was how light it was.
