@JR Boucicaut it could be nice with the option to host the images on MSH, if only to guard against broken links a few years down the road. There are posts in the archive that don’t make as much sense now because the images’ links have gone stale. If it’s like the seller’s subscription and costs a few dollars, I could definitely see it being worth it and being a huge plus to the longterm value of MSH all-around. There’s too much volatility in the image hosting business over a 5-10 year period.

The new, athletic position of goalie
flip12 replied to bunnyman666's topic in General Goalie Discussion
@bunnyman666 the helmet portion especially sounds like a job for the MSH-loathed lab at Virginia Tech. -
My white whale: Specs-wise, a modified PM9: the heel curve's been toned-down and a toe curve added, with the toe being the dominant pocket; like an X28 Lite. On top of that were optionals I was hoping for but considered unrealistic longshots: a slightly lower lie at the heel (shaved there like the Warrior Gionta) and a squarish toe similar to the old Montreal PC pattern. I've never been able to make moves as naturally with another pattern as with the PC. I may have missed previous chances because this guy was never on my radar in the hunt for these specs... Now to find ice time to try it out and see if the hunt was worth it.

Neither would I.

With all of the obsession over skate weights, the fastest skaters today are still only just as fast as the fastest were when top of the line was Graf 703s, CCM 652 Vacu Tacks, Bauer Supreme 7000s, etc. McDavid has posted some slightly faster times, and certainly the speed of average players has increased, but there isn't a new class of top end speed. To me that means you're not capped because of your skate weight. It's more about finding the skate that allows for the natural technique to unlock your maximum potential, 100% in agreement with @the_game. That could be a slightly heavier skate or a slightly lighter one. It's one thing to think your stride rate diminishes from wearing a heavier skate. That could be true. But a lower stride rate could also be caused by a more natural stride, leading to more efficient skating that requires fewer strides to keep up with the pace. I'd be interested if skating lap times decrease because the heavier skates do make one slower. I'm just saying, a slower stride rate doesn't necessarily mean a slower lap time, or less speed overall.

I was wondering if Grant Cruikshank would have converted away from Makos by now, with my first guess being Trues would be his next boots. He must have a healthy stash of Makos as he's still sporting them as a freshman at CC. Seeing how there's still love for that skate, it's a shame it's lost to the oblivion of Bauer's intellectual property portfolio.

I don't have True skates, I was quoting @goodguy.
-
Did you contact them about making a new pair closer to the Mako feel for you? @Nicholas G seems happy with his second pair somewhat following that approach.
-
BASE has a lie 4 W01 already: BM or BB09 or something like that. Also lie 4 in other classic Easton curves: Sakic, Drury, Iginla.

Looks amazing. It's a shame you have to do this to new skates, but glad for your sake that you have the chance to keep your son's skates going if the eyelets give him more trouble in the future. Hope they hold up for you though, they look sturdy.
-
If that’s the concensus on those, I’ll be sure to stear clear of that option.
-
I'll say it again: P28 lie 4. Now that I have a "lie 5" Mako E28, I'll double down on my request for a tame P28 (not the kinky Easton version) that's as low in lie as the Easton E4.

I thought you said 707's were the last skate that felt right? Could be I'm misremembering. Did he go over how your new pair would be different from standard Trues?
-
Did you inquire with True whether they could make the skates more along the lines of the Mako stiffness, mass, tendon guard, etc? @Larry54 noted the increase in bulk and stiffness as VH skates evolved: If you still have the True skates, maybe you could see if they can try to match the original VH build as their offer to remake custom skates once if they don't work out for you, since your son's experiencing that they're just overbuilt for his needs.

Do the Trues have the same specs on their steel as he had on his Makos?

I’d love a Kovy if I could check it out to make sure it’s right in key areas. Both Kovalchuk and Malkin seem to base a lot of their classic patterns on a PM9 with a toe curve, that’s why I’m curious about the degrees of overlap and uniqueness between the two.

How do you mean?

@Nicholas G, is a retail FT1 not within the range of pro-spec? Not all professional FT1 wearers add protection to them.

Byfuglien's a big guy but his feet aren't huge. I've seen his used MLX, VH, and True skates come up for sale in various online classifieds and he's a 10 or 10.5, iirc. Although they have to bear his heft, but they're not extraordinarily large pieces of footwear. @mojo122 I know you say you're retiring from this thread, but can you elaborate on where you feel there's overwrap? Along the whole facing area or in a particular spot or spots?
-
I heard anecdotally that he had his VH skates punched at a shop in Edina when they were in town to play the Wild. If that's true, he'd have had tweaks done even after using them in games.
-
Did you ever try the skate with two footbeds in? It sounds like the heel pocket is too high. In my opinion, lowering the facing won't address the fit all the way around your foot. If the volume is too high overall, the other areas that can't be cinched to your foot with laces will still be sloppy.

How's the heel lock after this intervention?

The new STX Surgeon RX3 gear is out.

Like you mentioned earlier, given that Warrior’s owned by New Balance, there’s a lot of footwear know-how in the greater corporate group. My thought has been, if the interest equation were in favor of doing it, Warrior would go ahead. Regardless of which direction they wanted to go, they could jump in the market and do ok with their investment. Even if they wanted to acquire a different small speed skate company to fold their IP into these hypothetical new skates, they could afford to do that. The fact that they haven’t makes me think the numbers really just don’t add up in that direction. PS—sorry for contributing to taking this so far off topic! PPSS—the new RX3 gloves have my interest 🙂 -

From what I recall from scattered posts is the problem with pursuing Graf in that way is it wasn’t a brand acquisition but a liscensing of the brand so it couldn’t be folded in under the any new brand’s roof. Graf-CH is still the parent company.
