Cage Color Question

Recommended Posts

My son has been wearing a Bauer 5000 with a black cage for the last five years. We recently purchased a new helmet for him for his birthday. When purchasing the helmet the store associate asked what he wore for a cage. When we told him it was just a black cage he seemed surprised. He suggested that he should have a silver, chrome or an Itech black & white cage. He said that when the cage is on and the player is looking at the puck on a white ice surface it is much easier on the eyes if he is viewing through a cage that is near in color to the ice color. I did not buy a new cage and I want to find out if I am being "sold" here, or if this is true. I haven't worn a cage in many years so I don't have experience here. I had not heard this theory before.

Players should not be looking at the puck on the white ice surface or they'll get their head taken off....But in a sense, I think he is right. I just switched to a chrome cage around Christmas time and I can tell a major difference. Going from black to chrome was a very wise decision, it's easier to see the surroundings. But that is just my opinion, others may think different.

Yes, it will provide a better view. I've used to wear a white cage for that specific reason. Now that's I'm switching back from a visor, I picked up the Itech one that's both black and white. Allegedly, the black on the outside absorbs the glare from the lights while being better-looking. The chromes, I don't like too much because they do give off glare off the arena lights. I hope that helps.

why did white cages stop being made? also i have one of the old school jofa bubble style cages, is it true because the steel is so soft and the holes are big that this cage is sometimes deemed illegal?

I don't know I went from an all black cage to one of the new itech two-tone cages (white inside/black outside) and I don't really notice that I see the puck better. My opinion is fit and comfort are better reasons to decide on which mask rather than its color, but thats just my opinion.

Actually, I have long since made that some-what the same argument for the most part. Mine is gray. Makes for better distinction when viewing through the bars. Don't want black (as you could, potentially, "lose" the black puck behind the black bars - know what I mean?) nor white because you don't want the illusion of confusing what's the ice and what are the bars.

SO, grey or chrome so as to more easily make out the difference between puck matter and the ice.

BUT, that's just me. Overall, it's probably just one of those things that is easy to over-analyze and in the end makes little difference.

About 6 months ago I made the opposite switch. Went from a white cage to black cage. I honestly can't tell the difference. In fact I've scored about 4 times more goals this season than any of my previous 20+ seasons. So I think it is safe to say it did not have a negative effect on me.

For all practical purposes, you don't see your cage when you play hockey. Your focal point is always going to be a few feet to several feet away. With a realitively distant focal point, any thin object placed close to your eyes becomes effectively transparent. Mentaly, the cage is not there so color makes very little difference.

I might hesitate to use a chrome mask because there is the posibility of it reflecting glare into your eyes at a brightly lit rink. I've never wore a chrome cage so that's just speculation.

i usually use my white/greyish jofa bubble or a black jofa 480 or a visor. i think chrome cages are for dusters. the itech concept delux is pretty nice too

It's all PP. I wear a full visor because I can see through it really easily, some people like different things. If your son is happy with black cages, then there is nothing more to it than that.

You are absolutely right! Focal point is the issue.

I went from a black cage to stainless and didn't notice any difference, except of course there is no rust on the stainless. Mostly a marketing ploy by ITECH, but casge color don't matter.

I tried the Itech two-colored and I found that I couldn't stand it.

The Bauer gunmetal grey ones are the best, and thats what I use :D

It seems like the two-tone would be rediculously annoying on peripheral vision, because if you catch any black it seems liable to mess with your eyes. Right now I'm using a true vision, my old black bauer got pretty smashed up taking hits this season, so I got the true vision for a quick fix. I like it better than black, but am defenately going with a chromie when I get a good cage this summer.

If it's what they call the "titanium" finish, then that's what I have too...I like it.

over the years I have used white, black, gray, and stainless. Honestly, can't tell any difference in glare, spotting the puck, etc. May be me but if the difference was noticable, I dind't see any difference

i dont really tell a difference but man our teams used to all have grey jofas or black jofas and when we played kids with chrome bird cages they heard it, i honestly think the shiney chrome like the ccm/jofa and some itechs is more for a fashion statement
