Recommended Posts

I searched already and found nothing on this topic so I'm just wondering if anyone here has toeproed or protectoed their skates that have plastic caps?

Thanks :D

Why bother? The exposed plastic toecaps eliminate the need for protoe. If you do it, it'll probably just chip off.

"Why bother? The exposed plastic toecaps eliminate the need for protoe. "

Earlier this week in a shiny game, I made my teamates plastic toe cap pop inwards. After practise I could physically push the toe cap in with little force. But then again he had externos.

Pantherfan, I think that's what he's talking about, the pro-tec-toe.

It really depends on what kind of skates you have. If you have almost anything besides graf 700's or bauer 8090's you'll have the exposed toe cap and won't need to do anything with it. Before I got skates with exposed toes, I never used the pro-tec-toe, so I can't give any advice on them.

As far as what they're supossed to do, if you have a cloth type toe on your skate, it will keep it from getting cut up as quickly. I don't see what this does that black enamel paint won't do. Maybe the fabric will absorb the pro-tec-toe a certain way.

I used it on a pair of Bauer 8000's I used to have (couldn't get the Bauers to fit my feet, so sold it to a bud). I saw them recently, and they looked great. No unraveling of the nylon/cloth toe-cap cover at all. He had a few splices in there, but they didn't fray or anything.

Great stuff for those folks with a old school toe cap like that (seems like everyone's going with some sort of alternate to those kinds of toe caps now though).

Most toes on the market come pre-treated. You can add to it if you like.

Everyone in the lockerroom laughed at me back in the day before the pre-treating began. I had a pair of Bauer Supreme comp 5000's (from the early 90's I think) that I wanted to keep nice-looking and everyone thought my skates looked ridiculous with that shiny coat of protectoe on the toe cap. Who's laughing now!? :D

the pro-tec-toe will increase the life if anything. do as JR said and tape off the sides, i missed a spot doing my 8090's and there was a big glob stuck on the leather for a while. also, i find that sanding/filing a bit of the pre-treat off a bit and then cleaning off the dust helps the pro-tec-toe stick better, since the surface is rougher. also, try to keep the coats as thin as possible, it'll do the job of protection as well as if you glob it on, but it'll look a lot better.
