Recommended Posts

Seeing as I don't want to be in a wheelchair by the time im 25 and with my already horrible knees/ridiculous knee bend while I skate, does anyone have any options as far as braces for under the shinguard?

Would one of those Neoprene ones work? There are some that have plastic inserts on the sides to help support/prevent side to side movement

Or do you mean something stiffer/more bulky than that?

Look around in your town for a place that sizes people with knee braces...an obvious thing. But ask them if they know any special sports doctors around that specialize in building sports equipment to specially fit around different braces while still offering the same protection. I have a pro shop and there is a doctor that I send guys to that need to wear knee braces under their equipment. The doctor special fits, and in many cases, makes the knee brace an integrated part of the shin pad. You should be able to find a place that would do that for you around where you live...or pretty close to you.

what type of problems are you experiencing? if you have lateral or medial instablity you should really think about seeing an orthopedic to get an exam and MRI. they may be able to fix it through sugery or phyiscal therphy. if hte problem is as bad as you say go see an orthopedic that is the best answer i could give you. i know the time off the ice will suck, but it could be the best thing you could do. i had my ACL replaced in my right knee. the total time i was out of action was 6 months. my knee is stronger now and i have no instablity in it.

After dislocating my knee, i got a brace that had a little C insert that you would put on the inside of the brace to help your knee stay put. it worked until the C insert broke. you have to get it fitted by a doctor though

Mainly im looking for something that helps support the knee yet is steamlined and doesn't add much bulk under my shinguard.

Something like:

yup... its just ridiculous soreness, likely due to the fact that I'm still growing at 17.

Yeah apparently I am, too. I've had osgood schlatter disease or whatever when your tendon is inflamed under your knee. I guess theres nothing really I can do about it except skate and deal with it hurting...

My brother had that when he was younger, basically it's the medical term for "growing pains". Me, and my other 2 brothers are 5'7"-5'9" My Dad is only 5'8" and my Mom is about 5'4". My brother is 6'2".

Keep in mind that a weak knee can be helped out tremendously by strenthening all the leg muscles around it. The muscles then act like shock absorbers and prevent further knee degradation/unwanted joing movement.

Squats, single leg dips off of a platform, balancing on one leg, put a cable pull just below the knee (cable facing forward) and bend and then straighten the knee.

In my experience, the neoprene rubber braces are not that good and really don't protect you from injury. I agree whomever said go to the doctor and get one custom made. I had played hockey for the first 43 years with no knee injuries. Then within the span of 4 months, had collisions that resulted in 2 MCL tears and a ACL tear. Because of my age, I opted for the custom braces instead of surgery. Been wearing them for last 4 years and they are great. Only minor pain on the ACL knee. They are expensive, about $1200 each, made by Donjoy. They are made for contact sports. They fit well under shins and goal equipment, hug the knee close. If one wanted a brace for preventative use, the DOnjoy is certainly excellent. Donjoy also makes less expensive braces, not custom, but still good ones.

I have a custom DJ brace and a neoprene brace with metal bars on the side. I wear the neoprene one day to day when my knee gets sore, it helps keep the kneecap located and gives me some support so it doesn't hurt too bad. I have to wear the donjoy to play basically any sport. 10-20 minutes of light skating and my knee is already very sore if I don't wear the brace, but I can go an hour and a half, maybe two hours with the brace before it starts to really hurt. Health care covered basically all of the knee brace, I think it was a little over 100 for a fitting fee, and the actual brace cost us around 150 out of pocket for something that was 1000++. Good idea getting a brace before you really muck up your knee, I tore my MCL in two places and partially tore my ACL last year and it didn't rehab as well as it should have, I'm going in now for arthroscopic surgury in September to clean up some scar tissue around the ligaments, and then in February to graft part of some tendon in my ankle onto my ACL to strengthen it up. It's a big headache and a lot of pain that you really don't want to go through.

sorry to bring this topic back from the dead, but anyone else use a knee brace? I use a Innovation Sports C180 for each knee under my knee pads.

Terrible example, but I Think your looking for What Stone Cold Steve Austin used during his career as a professional wrestler. I remember seeing Sundin wear one a couple of years ago when he was having knee problems, I assume its the same thing that Tucker is wearing right now.

Wow didn't realize this was 2 years old :$

neither did I, I was searching for something else when I saw this thread.

I know that Roenick was wearing one at one time, the game commentators mentioned that he hated it in the beginning, but then started to use it regularly.

I've another knee brace which I started out with, the Innovation Sports CTi2 Hockey brace. That was a customed made one, and I used it for about 2 years before I started using the C180 which has a lower profile.

I use the knee braces for indoor soccer as well, just that i cover up everything with my soccer socks. The refs do say anything, and all of them know I wear the knee brace.
