Major Jr Sticks

Recommended Posts

hey darkstar are you RH if you are will to sell one of your old SOP's if there still useable? :P

Thanks for asking but I shoot lefty! Also, I would spec the stick to 48" in length because I like my sticks wicked short since I'm only 5'6"!! Plus, I was having them make up the 7000 as light as possible. The good old days of woodies!! They should make the new NHL use wood only!

and how exactly would that help what the "new" NHL is trying to achieve... ie more goals faster play, etc. im not saying that composites have that much to do w/ it but doesnt taking them away sound a little counter-productive?

You're opening a whole new can of worms here....

Now I am the same guy that supports the new Nike jersey that everyone dislikes so how can I say the NHL should use wood sticks? I'm kidding, of course!!

I do think it would be pretty cool to have a true "throwback game" in the NHL. Imagine this: Only the Original Six can play, Toronto vs Montreal, Detroit vs Chicago, and the Rangers vs Boston. They would wear authentic weight 1960 era heavyweight jerseys. The equipment would be spec'ed to the 1960 season as well. Authentic Cooper or Winnwell all leather gloves with super long cuffs, small shoulder pads, baggy pants, minimal leather elbow pads(they were all leather back in the day), adequate shin pads, and all leather CCM Tackaberry skates with original Pro-Lite steel tubular blades. The choice of sticks would be from 2 brands only: Northland or CCM. All wood sticks with a fibreglass wrap over the blade. The players could curve them as big as they want, just like Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita. No helmets unless you are Red Berenson. Now the goalies would also be in for a surprise. Authentic leather goalie pads stuffed with deer hair, weighing about 8 lb at the start of the game and 16 by the end after soaking up all the water in the crease. Catch glove: Cooper GM 12, all leather, tan only. Blocker by Cooper, as well, flat front with circle cut outs. Separate chest pad and separate arm pads made by Pops Kenesky of Hamilton, Ontario. Goalie pants, just stuff some foam in these pants over here! Goal skates: again CCM Tackaberry model with leather cowling and all steel blade. Two stick choices: Northland or CCM, straight blade only. Would you like a lie 13, 14, or 15? Mask? Only if you are Jacques Plante.

And the only music in the building will be played by an organ. Can't you just imagine this?

Generally, Major JR/NCAA players get to pick from Popular Pro Patterns offered by the various companies. Far to many players to due custom for all. There are quite a few exceptions. Generally players who have been to a pro camp or are 1 year from the NHL. The only real customs is with Sherwood Wood Blades but only a few use them. Sherwood offers the CHL 9 different curves. They pretty much have every player covered. As someone else mentioned it really depends on team budgets and such.

Depending on the player, some will even use an NHL'ers curve because they know them and like their pattern so they can get something closer to their preference.

For most companies it really comes down to how deep they want to go. Some will go extra lengths to get players so they can retain them as they develop.

I once saw a Kelowna Rocket of the Western Hockey League playing with one of those silver Canadian Tire Vector 90's! Thought that was pretty funny, but then again, I learned he was a last minute call up due to illness of another player.

JJ

I can top that. Before OPS. I use to deal with a CHL player who use to bring me the team issued shaft and trade it towards the price of the shaft he wanted. The team would only order shaft from one company(wasn't even easton). Same with his blades. Anything different came out of his own pocket.

It was funny in a tragic way.

Ive also seen some synergy grip that came from the hitmen in the dub and on the name plate it said HITMEN. ive seen SOP's like this too the one ive seen has been from the CB screaming eagles and the namebar it said eagles 6. if i had to guess the 6 is the players number.

A nameplate isn't hard to change, a pattern is.

You'd be surprised what changing a nameplate can do!

There are many Pro players that think they are getting a custom curve when the OPS has his name on it.

chances are it was a retail pattern or even a more popular pro pattern, his name on the name bar, and probably a pro option flex, i have a friend who is/was major jr and pro and has a deal with easton, he said he goes SL grip, made to look like ST, YP curve, 100 flex, extra tall and his name on the bar, also in the ECHL he has some weird ass ccm shafts and blades, kind of like joe thornton

I don't think any guys on the Tigers this year have custom sticks. Barker maybe.

The guys just have their numbers written on the tape...

*shrugs*

A lot of them, some NHLers too, will have a pro stock with a blank name plate. Probably means they are getting them in a popular pro choice, YP 100 or whatever.

Anyone remember when Alexander Mogilny was using retail Sakic and Shanny gold Synergy Grips in the playoffs a few years ago?
