Steel help

Recommended Posts

Hi folks.

I need new steel for my '02 852 CCM Tacks, size 6 A/D. I'm guessing the size will be written somewhere on the blade or even the holder (Pro Lite 3). A few of questions:

1. What type of blade number/code should I be looking for? Inches, millimeters, some kind of alphanumeric thing?

2. What should I expect to pay?

3. Any certain kinds to look for or avoid?

As you can tell, I've never purchased steel before.

Thanks,

JJ

The size for the steel should be on the blade holder. Something around 260mm.

It should cost you about Cdn$55 installed in Vancouver.

If you are looking to save some money, go to a consignment store like CheapSkates, buy a used skate with the same steel that is in decent shape, and make the swap yourself.

CCM is on the front, inner part of the foot and is printed on the flat part that attaches to the boot. It should be a 3 digit number with no other notations around it. The measurement is in mm and is probably around 260 as mentioned.

You don't have too many choices but I would avoid the perf steel and while I don't have a price list in front of me I would guess around $50 US.

I need new steel for my '02 852 CCM Tacks,

Sorry to slightly threadjack, but I have just ordered a pair of 852s.

Do you like them, I am fairly beginnerish to the whole hockey playing scene, and previously had the cheap 252s, just to get started.

Again, sorry about the threadjack, just be interested to hear from someone who uses the 852s

Thanks

Any of the CCM steel available, solid or scalloped is fine. I wouldn't avoid either. The only other company i know that makes steel that will fit CCM is Hotblades, and those are good as well. The cost of steel varies from shop to shop. Try to find a place where the price of the steel includes the initial sharpening (not a rush job either) Price with that should be less than $30 per piece.

For sure a size 7 CCM is 271mm, so a 6 is definitely in the low 260's.

jjtt99, I assume that you are Canadian from your avatar. The cost for a pair up in Toronto is about $60 CAD, labour and sharpening included.

Thanks for the help fellas.

Yup, the size is 263 and I paid $56 CDN for solid "Proformance Stanless" blades, including taxes and sharpening.

I had no idea how low my steel was until I skated with these new ones. Pretty funny actually because with the old worn down ones I couldn't turn very well anymore, nor pivot from front to back. It was a gradual decline so I didn't notice but with the new ones I got a hat trick first time out! (Psychological maybe...I don't know.)

Guess I'll do a better job watching this time. Then again, I'm likely to get new skates before new steel again as I got about 2.5 years out of the last blades. Not sure if my boots have that much life left in them.

As for the person asking about 852's, for me they are great. I use to have 652 Tacks and that's a great skate for the price as well. Tacks fit my feet so I went one step higher with this pair.

Some folks here don't like the ProLite 3's...fair enough...personal preference. But I haven't had any problems with mine, then again I'm a 165 pound lightweight.

Cheers,

JJ

Sorry to bring up an old topic, but I didnt think it was necessary to start a new topic.

Okay, I have a question about replacing the steel on my Vapor XX skates. Basically when should I start to really worry about replacing the steel? Right now I have about 3mm before I reach to little perforated openings in the steel. Is it even valid to be worrying at this point in time?

thanks alot!

people have come into our shop with only 1mm left between the perforations.

at that point it can get tricky to sharpen. i'd go with the solid runners next time because they are less likely to warp and you'll get a few more sharpenings ouf of them. 3mm from the perforations is fine, but i recommend checking to see if your shop has good stock of the size you need so that you have new ones available when you do need to have them replaced.
