Cheaper OPS or 2-piece choices?

Recommended Posts

Have been looking at a lot of sticks lately. I'm old and slow and in a couple of beer leagues so the newest Vapor XXX isn't going to make much difference in my game. I see reviews and ratings of all the better and higher-end equipment but was wondering about some other products.

If you had to choose, and I'm looking at an 85 or so flex stick from these choices, what would you take...

Vapor VI = $69

Vapor VII = $59

Nike Apollo = $69 (not sure what regular flex is?)

Nike Apollo pro = $79 (What's the difference between the regular and Pro Apollo?)

Salming G10 + Salming RC9 blade = $73

Apollo shaft + Misc. Blade about $75

Mission M1?

Any thoughts? Am I missing anything here that would be decent but in the same price-range? I've heard/read good things about the Salming and Apollo.

thanks in advance :)

TB

Hockey Giant also sells some Gear OPS for like $50.

You can typically hit some of the major internet sites and find some good deal on pro returns, but while the patterns may be more exotic, they aren't typically covered under warrantee (so if you break it within the first 30 days, you're SOL).

Apollo Pro is Black (only difference I know of), would suggest a Apollo shaft with an Apollo or Bauer X/Endure comp blade. Great durabillty and good performance for the buck.

Have a Endure blade (Naslund/Sakic curve) in my Bauer XX shaft and it's been holding up really well. If you prefer a cheaper blade so be it, but the Apollo shaft would be a great choice.

Bauer Vapor VI(The Blue one) Its up there on my list under the TPS XN10.

It performed better than my Vapor XX and Synergy Si-Core.

I'll try to type this in an unbiased fashion... ;)

The price you posted is a closeout price on older products. I had retailers who sold the combo for closer to $130. Without knowing whether the other products are at greatly reduced prices, ours should be better at the same price.

By the way, I apologize for not yet responding to your PM from the other day. I've been working on preparations for the upcoming tradeshow and have been fairly busy the last few days.

This is break time!

I already have a Gear Velocity Grip - it and the others that HG have are all 100ish flex and too stiff for me.

Jason - no worries - I figured you were busy!

Yes, those prices I've quoted contained many closeouts vs some current-model equipment. I don't mind getting older equipment if the product is good - I guess I'm just looking to get the best performance for the price. The brand is not important to me (for some reason I always tend to gravitate towards non main-stream).

I don't want to have to buy 10 different sticks to find the one I like (call me cheap :) ) and it's hard to compare based on price alone.

Keep the opinions coming!

from that list, i would go apollo, i have used one, it's a real nice stick

other than that... what about a broken ops and blade?

you can get a top of the line broken ops shaft for $50 + blade $35

or there abouts..

makes for a pretty nice stick for $80-90 instead of paying $200+ for a new ops

I'm wondering, how is the blade?? feel and weigth-wise, when i saw this blade i thought feel would be great but weight would be pretty heavy...

Also for your thing...Depends if you like grip or not...if you do like grip: Bauer VI

if you dont: Appolo shaft or if you do like the blade(curve) then go for the OPS!

Anyways you can look in the sell forum their a lot of deal here!

You can find higher end one piece sticks for around 90$ these days. I have a beauty XN10 in the sale forum for that price. Its to bad i had a beautiful Ultra Lite shaft with a Focus flex blade that i just sold for 45 bucks-- woulda fit what your looking for. Best shaft ever. Just that foucus flex blade - was the absolute worst piece of crap i ever had. I also bought about 6 months ago a M1 for aout 65$$. Great stick for the price -- highly recomended

We sold a ton of the powertek JR OPS, only one senior though. With the exceptions of the Bantam AA guys using jr OPS, they held up pretty well.

The Salming blade has fantastic feel and the performance of the shaft is quite good for the price you're going to pay.

I thought of woodies Miike, but I'm in Houston where there's only one hockey store in town, plus the pro shop at the rink - it's difficult to find one that I like... I'm also a techno-freak so I want to try another OPS or 2-piece because - well, just because!

Chadd - I definitely want the feel of wood (I use mostly wood blades now) so I like to hear that the Salming might feel close instead of a hard plastic board. BTW, do you (or anyone) know if one of the Salming blade's are close to a 5 lie?

thanks guys...

The Salming is the best feeling comp blade out right now. It reminds me of the old Response blades I loved but the Salming is more durable.
