Grip?

Recommended Posts

I saw Kovalchuk doing something wierd to his stick like a couple of weeks ago and forgot about it until now. On the bench he was like rubbing his shaft down with something that looked like a little black thingy. I've never seen anything like that before and wondered if he was like putting on his own grip or maybe even trying to get some grip off. Anyone ever see him do it?

A piece of rubber, gum or something similar maybe to make the corners of his shaft grippy? You can do that with a puck as well.

I use an old butt-end and put some tape on it with the sticky side upward. So when i rub it over the shaft it adds a nice grip but it looks ugly!

maybe you saw kovalchuk doing the same thing?

Does rubbing a puck on your shaft really give it a bit of grip?

Just adds a bit of texture for grip but not really tacky.

and comes off as soon as you rub your hand on it.

That´s true. It works pretty well on wood sticks or sticks with sandpaper like structure, though.

you could could always just buy some of eastons Tackifying Cloth

from your LHS. have used it and it works really well. i reccomend you use a paper towel to hold the cloth when rubbing it on your stick otherwise the tackyness will come off the cloth on to your hand and ts hard to get off

sticky side of tape on the stick is really sticky so i put it on ,take it off with like floor wax or paint thinner and it leaves a nice little grip behind

There is another topic on grip substances in another thread....but I'm telling you that you can't go wrong with the Easton Tackyfying Cloth.

It's perfect! Highly recommend.

The tackyfying cloth is basically a pine tar substitute. (You know, the black stuff baseball players put on their baseball bats).

The cloth is a combination of beeswax and some other stuff.

I suggest using a rubber glove or something to guard your hands from the cloth when removing it from the bag and applying it to the stick. It's very sticky and not easy to get off your hands (not impossible, just need to work at it).

When applying it to the stick wrap the cloth around the spot on the stick where you would normally have your bottom hand while stick handling.

Then rub the cloth up and down the stick to the spot where your bottom hand moves down for your slapshot.

I don't find much reason to use the cloth on any other part of the stick but others may.

Once the cloth is used it is a close match for my other Easton sticks that come with grip applied.

Good luck.

I've seen quite a few guys using this "black thingy". I'm pretty sure it's tape (probably friction tape) wrapped around a stick, and the players just swipe it up and down their shaft for a little extra grip.

All it is is a piece of a stick, or anything for that matter, with regular black tape taped around it with the adhesive side facing up. A lot of guys do it. I do it, but I use white tape because the black comes right off the stick and onto your gloves, for some reason white doesn't.

When I used to not work at Mellon Arena I would sit next to the bench and most of the players would use a broken stick with all kinds of tape wrapped around it for grip. Thats what he was doing.

if you were a big player like kolvachuk getting custom sticks, wouldnt they do something about the grip for you?

It could be a matter of him liking the way the grip from a beater roll feels as opposed to other types of grip.
