All Torhs Team 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2005 Prob. the worst one ever that Ive had would be when a guy on our team yelled the F word after getting a penalty, so the ref gave him an extra 10. Two minutes later the other team gets a penalty, then that player yelled the F word. But the ref didnt give him a extra 10. Our captain went over to the refs to discuss, and he was really loud, the fans could hear it is what i was told. Our Captain just asked him why there was no damn penalty for him but there was for us. All the ref had to say dont say "Damn" to me. Our captain stood there for like five seconds. then yelled, well Jeepers, thats just a doozie. But it was so bogus that we got the 10 and they didnt. kosydar 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2005 Was it the same ref who called one penalty and didn't call the other? Some refs are much more likely to let that stuff go than others. I know half the time when I ref I'm not on the same level with my partner in regards to this kind of stuff, so he might let a lot more go than I will. Also, the first player could have previously been warned in the game for language, while the second player hadn't been. I'm not saying that its acceptable or anything, but there are plenty of reasons why one would be called and one wouldn't. And besides, demanding a penalty from a ref, especially a misconduct is never appreciated and I can't blame the ref for blowing him off.
cameltaur 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2005 First game of our home tournament, first period. Scuffle breaks out, i'm 10 or 15 feet away. One of their guys is talking to my centre but not getting to close so i give him a shove from behind, not too hard, trying to get him to lash out at my guy or me and get a call. Instead the ref grabs me and gives me 2+10+one game suspension for "hitting" from behind. The call wasn't third man in, it was already about 8 guys shoving each other. Jim A 4 Report post Posted December 16, 2005 can also depend on what/how the word was used...if you're doing to show up the ref or it did show him..up..dime city...otherwise at times they'll give you the leeway...the give and take between NHL'ers and Refs is amazing..and I love how the refs usually get the better word in... Malone_9 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2005 I got hit cleary from behind last year and broke my wrist and collarbone. No call. We were winning with 5 seconds left and it was in our zone with their goalie pulled so I pinned it and the buzzer sounded.....3 second later (the game was over) I get drilled from behind by a 6'5" 250lb defensemen from the Czech Republic (I'm 5'6" 135ish) and break both bones in my wrist. He wasn't penalised at all. Not exactly a bad call against me but it still sucked balls, out for 7 1/2 weeks and missed 2 weeks of HS.As for a bad call against me....in a High School summer game this year I got thrown down and the clearly, I mean theres no way this was an accident, punched in the head in the corner with the ref two feet away...I don't get a call so as I'm skating away I yell, "ref that was a punch to my f-in head, open your eyes" instant 10 minutes. utvolsfan007 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2005 Probably the worst against me was in a game when all the penalties were going against my team, they called one on the other team , I said out loud, it's about time and I got a unsportsman like conduct call on me. Wrong penalty, but right punishment to the right player.

The give and take between NHLers and refs is a lot because they are at the top level, both referee and player know what they're doing. One of the feature selling points of the league is the players, and the referees know that.Referees at just about any other level below Junior A and college have a problem with someone younger than them possibly telling them something they don't know about the game. Yes, it's tough being a ref, you take abuse from everyone and the burnout rate is high. I know I wouldn't want to do it. But at the same time, when you take on a job, you do it well. You can put players in their place when they're out of line, that's fine. But don't have an ego about it. Too many times I've seen a referee tell a coach or a player questioning a call "It's just high school (or junior, or club), let it go", like they have something better to do. Guess what buddy, the Rangers are playing at Madison Square Garden tonight, and if you were too good to be reffing here I'm sure they could use you. I cringe when I see Johnny Stripes wearing the highest possible level patch he can on his jersey (usually something pathetic anyway like ECAC DIII Women's) to ref a high school game because it's gonna be a mess. Eazy_b97 1 Report post Posted December 16, 2005 I got tossed out of a game for looking at the referee. I thought it was a weak call, and looked over my shoulder with a smile, he told me to stop, so I looked away and then I was tossed.
malcb33 97 Report post Posted December 16, 2005 They are so many bad calls in my league, I could even remember them all. I have been skaing to the bench with my back a player on the other team(without saying anything to him, or doing anything), he cross checked in the back while I was getting over the boards and we both got matching minors for ruffing!!Player on my team has been punched in the head then given matching minors!I have been blamed(involved) for starting a fight, when I was on the bench! There way to many, I could go on for ever!! ambro 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2005 You guys will like this one... My stick broke in the middle of a shift, so I was without a stick. Jim A 4 Report post Posted December 16, 2005 I keep waiting to see the kid from Detroit come on here, who while at NARCh, walked back on the floor after the game, made contact with each official, called them d-bags repeatedly, tossed some sticks and water bottles at center floor...in front of 150 people..then denied the entire thing when his dad asked if it happened... SR27 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2005 Reffing in my league is crap. I saw a game where a guy gets his legs pulled from behind and his upper body pushed head first on top of the boards at the players bench. Guy loses like 4 teeth and breaks his nose...drops unconcious (sp?) and had to be picked up by an ambulance. Oh yeah and after some discussion the refs gave it a 2+2. That´s the worst call I ever saw. Worst thing happening to me was when I was brought down on a break away and when the play stopped I looked up and the guy who hooked me down was on top of me trying to pull me up and in the same time kicking and then stepping on my knee. I had no idea what he was doing until he tried some leg lock stuff that you might see in wrestling he basically fixed my knee between his legs and then lets himself drop....bang goes my knee....felt like my 3rd meniscus tear but turned out to just be a strain. I couldn´t get back up or walk..... guy gets a gross miscunduct....I get carried to the lockers where the guy was heading as well.....teammate drops me off at our door and goes after him.....everyone notices and you have 30 guys brawl. Bottom line...I was out for a months my teammate was suspended for the rest of the season and that other guy gets 2 games...... you see...beer league can be big time fun. Jason Harris 31 Report post Posted December 16, 2005 The worse I saw occured at the end of a game that we won fairly handily. One of the guys on my team had a tough time controlling himself. What might start as wrestling in front of the net would always escalate. A small scrum materialized, and I think it must have been his turn to retaliate, because he kind of skated around the ref to punch/shove the guy. At that instant, the ref shoved our player onto the boards at the other team's bench and had him in a choke hold with his forearm to the throat. It was pretty bad, because our guy was struggling to get away but was effectively incapacitated. So another one of our guys politely asks the scorekeeper for the ref's name. "THAT'S A GAME RIGHT THERE!" was the response.
Rustybender 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2005 I'm on D, racing side by side with the puck carrier towards my goal when he kicks in the afterburners and is going to blow by me. Before he gets clear I slash at his stick hard but miss and get his wrist. He falls to the ice. Whistle blows. I get slashing, good call. 5 minute major, whatever. There's 3 minutes left so off I go. I know alot of the guys on the opposing team and as the ref is skating me off a friend asks "you outta here?" I respond "yeah, I'm outta here."10 minute misconduct. Game misconduct. 2 game suspension. The ref interpreted my "yeah I'm outta here" as "you motherf**ker"Unbelievable. The other team went to bat for me but the ref would not back down.I do not ever argue with refs. If I get a penalty 95% it was intentional. My last game I shoved I guy down in front of the net with my free hand and got called for crosschecking. I politely asked the ref to change the call to either roughing or interference. He laughed and changed it to interference.

notorious#29 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2005 Well one that comes to mind.So I'm on a breakaway (it was at the end of a shift so I tierd.) As I'm running out of gas, I see the defensemen catch up to me, so I throw it to my right hand and try to protect the puck long enough for some help, well the defensemen gets his stick under mine and lifts it up, then he hits it so hard it flies back and hits him in the helmet. I get a penalty for high sticking.
masterpirate13 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2005 It was a high school hockey game that would have gotten my team into the playoffs. We were playing the number one or two team in our league. We were winning with 9 seconds left in the game. The ref drops the puck and they score with 3 seconds left. What I didn't know until we watched the tape of the game was that it was a dad from the other team running the clock...or actually not running the clock in this case. He didn't run the clock for some amount of time. All i know is that they dropped the puck and we won the faceoff and pinned it then they took it away centered it and took a couple shots on me and then put the third one in and there was still 7 seconds left. Then they beat us in overtime. I was pissed when I found out.
