Autographs

Recommended Posts

I'm not a huge autograph guy but I have a couple dozen auto'd baseballs my father gave me. The only auto's thing I really have on display is the bobby orr picture in Jason's avatar. My father was working for a company that Bobby Orr was endorsing and he got that pic personalized for me.

And he spelled it "Chad" LOL

At least he only got Chadd's name wrong, I got a letter back speaking to me as if I were a girl.

I used to be huge on collecting autographs when I was younger. At work now, but off the top of my head I know I have a Jagr autograph on his rookie card, practically every islander over the last 10 years (yeah that's not saying much I know lol but that does include guys like Luongo/McCabe/Redden/Chara/etc) on something or other, on a Bertuzzi game used stick I have the autograph of every single Islander from his rookie year (which is where/when that stick is from), and a whole bunch other stuff kicking around. Non-hockey my four best are signed jerseys of Emmit Smith, Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, and Steve Young.

My favorites are probably from Brett Lindros though. I used to have season tickets directly behind the Islanders bench, and he scored a goal right after a face off to open the period. Brand new puck, so they kept using it. On the next play, the puck comes over the glass and rolls right to me. Turns out this would be the last NHL goal he'd ever score. He was obviously emotional about having to retire soon after due to concussions, so me and my mom (this was when I was somewhere between 10-13) wrote a note to his parents letting them know we had the puck and its his if he wants it. They wrote us back and thanked us and said they'd love to have it to give to him when he was ready. About 6-8 months later we got a big box of all sorts of personalized autographs and a thank you letter, plus an autographed Eric Lindros (by Eric) jersey. Sorry for the long story, but I always thought it was kind of cool.

I'll ad something, since i caddied for a golf tournament.

I now have a...

-Brad Richards signed golf ball

-Brad Richards signed putter

-Brad Richards tournament worn golf shirt.

I was lucky enough to caddy for Brad when the charity golf tournament was around. I simply asked for the ball, but got a few other things. No not to resell, just to place in my room.

My brother was about to give my daughter a signed Paul Henderson stick from the '72 Summit Series... but I nixed it. She wouldn't have appreciated it (I would have... give it to me! give it to ME!)

He gave her a signed card instead and the stick is sitting around in his garage waiting for the day when she wakes up and gets interested in pro hockey. (give it to me! give it to ME!)

I have two autographs, one from one of the all-time greats, and one from an upcoming player. One is an Avs hat signed by Ray Borque when he was coaching for his son Chris at Cushing Academy, which is around 10 minutes away from where I live. Another Cushing player named Marvin Degon had signed a puck for me. Marvin's currently in the Rangers farm system, playing for the Wolfpack.

I didnt even know about eBay back then. I was told they were lost in his apartment.

The Roy was a rookie card too. Im not mad that they were lost, seeing how it was almost 7 years ago. Ive gotten plenty of autographed stuff from that family though, Ive even skated with John, Ted, Chris and Jim(the 3rd Brother) before.

Yup, the OPC is the one I have too. Hell, I got that damn thing 15 years ago and even back then I had it in this huge frigging case. Then again it's buried somewhere at my mother's house so I'm guessing mine's on eBay too.

My question is are autographs really worth that much money. If i had a slip of paper signed by Mario or 99 is it worth lots of money? I mean I know its worth what someone will pay for it, just like anything else, but its still just ink on paper..

Whether they're a superstar or not, all they did was write there name, same as any Joe Shmo..they just are on TV and make big bucks..

Anyways,

I have a puck signed by Lalime, the day after he lost to Detroit stopping his undefeated streak with the pens..

and a puck signed by Ken Wregget

thunderstick by Brian Holzinger, Rico Fata, and Konstantine Koltsov..

Here's a "How could I be so frickin' stupid?" story.

My older brother had a baseball that had been given to him by our grandfather. It had been signed by the 1936 All-Stars (or something like that), and my brother kept it in a case on his desk, although the truth is he never was a fan of watching sports.

Consequently, one day at about nine years old, I was able to convince myself that my brother never really would mind us playing with the ball. But not just a game of catch. No, we had to make it more fun by throwing it over the eighteen foot roof and letting it roll down the shingles to the other person. That game was a lot of fun until we lost the ball.

I saw him this summer and something we said reminded me of the incident, so I finally apologized 34 years later. His response was "Oh, yeah, the ball Papa gave me, huh?" I guess the point is it bothers me more that I did it than it does him. I don't believe in collecting autographs, but I'm kicking myself that I ruined an opportunity for my brother to make a couple of bucks off that.

Just got this one.

The jersey was thrown in the stuff from the fire and I was able to get out it. Nick was in the shop yesterday and hooked it up.

The other jerseys were done cleaned yesterday and now they are hanging on the store wall.

Mats Sundin: gave my dad his jersey and signed it for him when him and I went to a Leafs and Sens game for his 40th birthday.

Marc Andre Flury: when he played for the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles was staying at the same hotel as us, so got a signature.
