Illegal stick

Recommended Posts

Sammy is just pissed cuz he got caught. Ever hear the saying, Nobody in jail is guilty? Well it's kinda the same here; he got caught and how could he be guilty!? I guess it's more of a show than anything, to at least look like he's putting up some kind of defense.

I'm not sure, but I think some blades can be hard to measure with the tool they use. Blade twists, openess, where exactly on the blade they take the measurement from, can all throw off the measurement. To me though, it's not hard picking out an illegal curve. 1/2 isn't that big, so when you see a Jags or Kovalchuk "hook" it's pretty obvious. I'm actually not sure why it doesn't get called more often. I guess cuz every team knows alot of players do it.

Fury...a quarter? WTF! A quarter! Lol...what blades are you thinking about...Easton Eurocurve!?

Yeah, I couldn't remember. But, you know me, I use the Modanos. Eurocurve, nah, I was thinking more like Mylec Ultra Curve.

Lol! The EuroCurves were nasty though...almost as bad as a Mylec, bend with my foot plastic blade.

its a rule that either needs to be enforced or removed..it can't be a benefit only for certain situations..and since players have both legal and illegal sticks on the bench..it becomes gamesmanship...

so either..sticks are measured and deemed legal before a game..or you get rid of the rule...

Thats what I'd like to see. It can't be a use it when you feel rule, especially when most of the league knows who uses an illegal curve.

And who do you propose is going to measure the dozen or so sticks that every single player has prepped for the game? Foolish, just leave it the way it is.

How about telling the manufacturers to do it. Then if someone is caught, they give the player a 5 game suspension and the trainer gets fined. Have a guy like Kris King (who was checking pads), go around periodically and check, leave the rule inplace incase someone wants to challenge it. Have a tie in that if caught with a particular brand, that brand is no longer allowed to provide sticks for that player.

I disagree with the rule. The NHL wants more goals right?

haha

then people might get sticks with like 80 degree angles and curves that can hid the puck inside it. lol....a circualr blade, but then how would you shoo?

I think Demitra got caught with an illegal stick this year, too. I had a link to an LA Times story about it, but that page is no longer active.

What I've read is that a team checks out your curve on faceoffs and figures out if you are using an illegal curve and keeps note of it if they need a powerplay later in the game. For that reason players will use an illegal stick early in the game and use a legal one late, when the game is on the line. Just gamesmanship, in my humble opinion.

The check it out on face-offs, use ex-teammates, all-star competition guys, and stuff like that. I remember (Comrie?) either got caught, or caught someone with an illegal stick and used it in a game.

Comrie called out Kovalchuk. Who then got a penalty, came out of the box and sniped, skated past the Oil bench and asked if that stick was alright. They later had a pretty decent tilt.

I love Kovalchuk's cockiness cause the kid backs it up.

NHL History Lesson: 1993 Cup Finals- Kings/Habs. Game 2 in Montreal, Kings up 1 game to none. The game is either late in the third period or overtime. Marty McSorley gets called for the illegal curve. Eric Desjardins scores power play goal to win the game. Habs go on to win series 4-1. John Leclair scored a bunch of OT goals as well.

The idea to check sticks before the game isn't sound because the equipment guy will just swap out an illegal stick at game time. The rule has been around since Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita used 1.5" curves in the mid 60s. The goalies were getting rockets blasted at their heads. The first rule change was only down to 1". Then they reduced it to 1/2". Let the rule stay in place.

You check the sticks before the game, and leave the option to call for a stick measurement during the game in. Then, if caught, the Equipment manager faces a big fine and player gets a big suspension. That's alot to risk for an illegal curve.

Or just get rid of the rule, it's just garbage to have a rule everyone knows is being broken only to pull it own on a hope they didn't change sticks.

You're having a Dead rehash, Peter..... :D

The Kings were ninety seconds away from going home, up 2-0. Instead, the Habs scored a power play goal to send the game into overtime, during which Leclair scored the winner. The Habs then took the next three.

I've alway said there are two plays that won four game series, which is not easy to do when more than four games are played. But I have no doubt the Kings would have won that series if McSorley hadn't been called for the illegal stick. And I have no doubt the A's would have crushed the Dodgers were it not for Gibson's homer.

Thanks for setting the record straight. I got the part about the illegal curve right! Habs still had St. Patrick back in 93. As for Gibson's homer: that was first ball fastball right down Broadway!! C ya!! A moment for the ages in baseball, for sure.
