Got a degree in Sociology/ business Admin. minor....And ended up becoming a firefighter, And for you guys that said you wanted to or were thinking about becoming firefighters if you get with a good dept. it is a great job, your not going to be rich, but you get a great work schedule, and overall just gain alot from the job in all aspects of your life...I would highly recommend it to anyone.

And don't forget that you get to ride around in a big red shiny truck. LOL!!!

No doubt chief...lol

Sciences blow for me. Biology is just irrelevant to my interests, and chemistry...well wtf is a mole? Physics I don't mind but needless to say I won't be taking sciences. I'm thinking of law, while having a sports store on the side to keep my interests going.

I'm currently only 10-12 classe away from my degree in secondary education.

I hope I use my degree and get hired as a teacher, cos this private school is expensive!

My advice to the younger ones here: Don't worry, just let life happen. I never imagined I would switch to education from pharmacy even 18 months ago. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

I firstly wanted to be an architect but i cant draw (i now know this isnt a huge factor), then a lawyer, but i suppose it would be only for the money. I'm looking in to property development and know it would be hard to start off but if i can make it work it could leave me with more time for hockey! I'm also waiting to see where hockey takes me because at the moment it is the only thing i really enjoy doing. i would be willing to work part time to play semi pro hockey rather than make a load of money but have no time for it!

Mecanical Engineer. I'm a senior in HS. I was always facinated by the way things were made. I think the calc is going to kill me though.

It's hell, but if you stick with it and have a good group of people around you to help with homework you'll make it. Don't copy straight up from friends because then you are going to bomb, but there's a lot of problems where you just need more than one mind to wrap around it or you're not going to understand it. If you can get the 80's in high school to make it in to Engineering and if you have a strong work ethic you can suceed in it.

Probally become a firefighter, until my band gets signed :D

Yeah, I was the same way, except I thought I would just work a pizza shop job until my band was signed.

Now I work for the gov. doing exciting secret stuff. I was asked to do a job fair and speak to a group of 8th graders about what I do, but it didn't turn out all that great because my only answer to their questions was "sorry, that's classified information!" ;)

bumping this old thread because i need advice. I'm graduating in 3 weeks and I still haven't found a job. I changed my major from computer science to biology so I don't have any intern experience. I can't find a job.... What steps should I take? all of the jobs on monster and stuff require 1-2 years experience, I just can't seem to find a starter job to learn all of that. Should I intern for nothing for another year? but I still have all of these loans to pay off. I'm lost.

Any specific area in the "biology" field you are interested in? Going for a few more credits in a specialized area could help you pick up a gig.

I'm looking to be in the biotech/research field. I have taken all of the required courses for these potential jobs. I list that I have had lab course experience in my resume but it doesn't seem to be cutting it. I don't know what to do, I have student loan bills coming up in 6 months.

I grqduated with a BA and an MA in Biology. I was a milkman for 13 years afterwards. Sorry to be a wet blanket. I even changed my course midway through my grad program towards molecular biology to get on the early 90's bio-tech bandwagon. I could get a job for $6 an hour scrubbing testubes at Chiron or Genentech, or make $13 an hour as a milkman. I was married and we were starting a family at the time. I was a milkman (everything from warehouse to freezer to wholesale delivery to 48' tractor trailer delivery to Q/A lab to sales manager) for 13 years (including working full time while going to school) before I found the job I have now. And my job now has nothing whatsoever to do with biology. But my degrees did open the door for me to get in.

I applied to a PhD program a few years after graduation. My grades were fine, my test scores were fine, my letters of reference were fine, but they said I needed research experience. I said "if I had research expereince I wouldn't need you now would I?" They did not like that much, so needles to say I remained a milkman for a few more years...

Good luck.

I'm starting my Fire-paramedic course this year. Going to be tough, I've already got my class 4 license to drive rigs with air brakes, I have my First aid and CPR and 200 Hours of community service. Pretty excited to be getting started on this

In the mean time I just started a job as a caretaker at a community center, which is by the way the most boring job i've ever had. I actually sit for 5-7 hours a day doing nothing. I talk to the lifeguard at the pool sometimes, but otherwise I actually do nothing and get paid really well. In the winter I DO get to make the ice outdoors though, looking forward to that and the zamboni.

Start off at a payed internship if you can...it doesn't have to be much, but just get it on your record and move forward from there, once you have experience in the field. You should stop by the career center or advisors at your university, as well as talk to professors or others in the field who could give you advice, or perhaps a good word for a starting position. Remember, most people don't get their careers simply by quietly doing the work. You have to make connections in the process, and usually know someone to give you a leg up. Think about who that person could be, and seek them out.

I may be somewhat off base here, but I've read and heard that the biology field is overcrowded right now. I believe that a phd (a specialized master's at the least) would usually be required to do the serious lab research, otherwise you will end up "scrubbing test tubes" like Gman said. Anyway, talk to someone who knows the field (a good prof. could help you quite a bit). Their advice will be 1000X better than what you will find on here.
