wickedwrister 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 I have noticed this for a long time. Why do these guys wear these cages that are too big? They don't fit the chin cup. It's almost always too long, and the cage just kind of floats around. My son and I have always worn cages that fit nice and sung. Seems like an accident waiting to happen to have that kind of play involved.
TBLfan 25 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 i noticed that too, i guess they just don't like the feel of it snug up against the chin.

BushLeagueDangler08 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 Yeah it's all PP. Most kids that I play with in HS wear the cages loose including me. I think its more of a comfort than anytihng else. I dont really like having the cage right up against my chin Its all PP tho
ddibrano77 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 you wear it loose cause it stays out of your way and you can breathe better, closest thing to a half shield or nothing (wore mine this way in college). It doesnt feel good playing a game with your chin being rubbed like crazy not to mention you can barely open your mouth to breathe cause you have your cage welded to your face (and it hurts worse to get hit in the face when its that close no room to move). Plus its easier to take off when you fight...!
Svatos37 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 its not that the cages are too big it is just that they do not fit snug. Like everyone else said pp.

Most guys playing in college have junior experience where they had already been playing with a half shield. Add that with the fact that those guys will get yardsaled A LOT less than your average midget/high school/recreational player (their heads are up a lot more, and they don't put themselves into as many bad places), and it isn't really that big of an issue. I see where you're coming from though, it's not the way cages are designed to be worn, and there's really not a good reason to do it other than image. hockeyherb 1 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 Could be sort of the fashion statement too like when Jordan brought baggier pants into basketball. I remember when Lindros played Jr A hockey he was one of the guys that would wear their helmet pushed way up on their forehead and I noticed several other guys doing that as well. They probably just liked the look of it even though they had some serious explanation as to why they do it.
Gongshow11 1 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 its only an american thing. once i came to the states, i loosened up my cage bigtime, its less of a distraction when it not touchign your chin plus you can speak a bit better. I tried going back to cup on chin but i couldnt do it
Ti-girl 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 In the dub a lot of guys push their helmets up so they look under the visor. In our league (womens) they started having equipment checks and there can't be more than a finger inbetween your chin cup and your chin.Just for protection's sake. I hate it, but I'll still play. cabreezy 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 A lot of people wear these cages so low because its called a dangle cage!!! They like it tht way and there not a p****!!! ^ wow, take it easy there . . .I bought my visor/cage combo so the chin cup would fit snugly but I also noticed that you couldn't speak or catch your breath easier if it was this way. So now I keep mine a little loose but in one game while taking a face off some guy literally pulled off my helmet and it came off so easily that it worried me. Fletch 219 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 Mine's about 3/4 of an inch away from my chin...enough so the impact won't be too bad if I get hit up high.

Langenbrunner15 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 In college, many guys won't hit as high as in bantams and such, therefor you don't have that hit that's up there many times, as your head is up most always, and have the expierience.
ddibrano77 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 when it comes to the fashion of wearing cages and the sort is when you see all the D-1 players now wearing chrome cages. When I played college chrome had just came out and a guy on my team wore one, we busted his chops all the time for it being ugly. I didnt have to wear anything in Jr's so yes those of us who came from there do know the value of having it be loose and have the comfort of breathing, mouthing guys, and room to move (wipe your face off, get a drink). And yes you are prone to cuts on the chin, but i would rather take that than an elbow with it plasterd to my face and jarring my chin or chipping a tooth. hapamatt122 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 when I used to wear a cage, I had flipped upside down those tabs that hold it in place at the top to raise it up so that the chin cup was secure against my chin.. I played a couple seasons like this and its true, I couldn't catch my breath or talk so when I'd get back to the bench I would unstrap the cage so I could open my mouth and breath, and just strap it back on when I hit the ice.. then someone told me to wear it regular so that it dangled, and even keep the straps a little looser so I can breathe better and this works real well.. the thing I do is keep those stoppers on the sides of my helmet extra low so that it will catch the cage before it takes out my jaw.. well this was all before I switched to a half shield.
