Am I the only who hates segmented Elbow pads?

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I recently needed new elbow pads, and in my shopping I found that I really had only two options:

1. New style pads with segmented bicep protection and extended forearm protection.

2. Old school "donut" style pads.

I found that the new style pads seemed to either pinch the inside of my arm, or they chafed my tricep area. And the old school pads were simply to sparse in the forearm area. I finally found a set of Jofa 6500s, like this:

I thought they were a good compromise with what I was looking for. I am just wondering, 1. due to the fact there are far more segmented types, am I the only one who feel the pinching and or chafing? And 2. Are there other alternatives that would suit my needs?

Thanks for looking guys.

Just do what a lot of pros do...get a set of Jofa elbow pads and chop off the bicep pad.

Seems like a good idea, although if my wife saw me do it I'm pretty sure I'd earn a solid crack to the head.

That sucks, but just try to reason with her, yeah you won't be able to resell them or something, but they could be really comfortable if you do it.

I used to use the Jofa 8025 (9025 is still a current model) and it has no upper cuff at all but is better than the ones you have pictured. I recently replaced them with DR EP44s, a much more protective pad. I then did the same thing that I did to a lot of other elbow pads and cut off the bicep protector. The nice thing about the EP44 is that the bicep is held in place by three elastic straps and your wife would never be able to tell you modified them.

I used to have all the problems you do, and my pads used to slide all over the place and bother me. I have a pair of jofa's which are the current Rbk 7k's, and I think they're great. If you know you don't want a segmented pad though then go with that.

i just cut mine off, i hate it too, i like the mikey mouse ones, the big bullet proof ones i hate there too big and they stop my mobility, so id say geta decent pair and just chop off the bicep cuff,

I currently use some Fox dirtbike elbow pads. The are the least restrictive elbow pads I've ever used. They don't have any straps, you just slide them on and the spandex (or whatever the stretchy material is) does all the work. They weigh about nothing if you're a weight freak...which I'm not. I know they aren't as protective as they should be for competitive hockey, but I don't exactly play competitive hockey anymore. Here's a link to the newer model of what I'm currently using...mine actually look less protective:

Fox EP's

Just thought I'd throw out the option even though it sounds a little unorthodox.

If you have an aversion to performing surgery on your pads, here are some EPs that don't come with bicep cuffs (or bicep straps for that matter):

D&R EP15 (apparently there are two versions though, one that comes with the cuff and one that comes without--Chadd might be able to clarify this)

Itech 155 Techlite

Itech 275 SMU

Franklin 5650

Jofa 8025

Jofa 9025 (I may be wrong, but I think this is a longer version of the 8025--it may extend lower to protect more of the wrist)

I currently use the Jofa 8025. Personally, I don't think that the lower strap is particularly secure and the velcro tabs occasionally snag on the inside of my jersey.

I used to have a pair of junior Eastons that were essentially the same design as the D&R and the Itechs. The reason why I don't use those anymore is because the stitching that attaches the cap came loose and the straps were sliding out from underneath.

I went throught he same thing a couple of years ago and had the same concerns, likes and dislikes you mentioned. I ended up getting the Jofa 9025's (no bocep protection) and have been very satisfied with all aspects of performance (protection, comfort, mobility, non-slippage).
