this sounds like a great option. i have some questions though. i have always hated mouthguards because they were too long and would bother my gag reflex thus when the mouthguard would be in place i would be skating and out of nowhere i would almost throwup. also breathing wise, i cant play breathing through my nose i need to use my mouth, do these custom ones help with both my problems?

yeah i used to suffer the same things when u did. i just played a game with these tonight and they stick to your teeth so bad that it's impossible for them to shift. no gag reflex either as i can breath really well.

But, unlike a full-face shield or cage, a mouthguard isn't 100% protection from broken teeth, is it?

No, but a cage/shield is not 100% either, since you can still crack teeth from an impact to the jaw while wearing a cage. The main function of a mouthguard is to prevent/reduce concussion injuries which a cage/shield will not help, hence the reason many leagues require both. A mouthguard does provide some impact protection, but really that is a bonus.

So then, kids shouldn't have this false sense of security, thinking that a half-visor and a mouthguard will be as safe (for their teeth) as a full-face.

I just found this pic of a guy in a Swedish league, and was gonna ask about his mouthguards when I found this thread. They must be similar to Accord's custom mouthguards, just different colors.

If they're going to wear a halfer, at least they have a mouthguard in. I'm sure they don't have a false sense of safety about it for the most part. The mouthguard will still prevent a lot of damage, although, they leave thier bottom row of teeth open without a cage. It's they're choice though.

http://customguards.com/product_gp.shtml

saw that in the hockey magazine i recieved today, 50$ doesnt seem too bad.

This is the one I got. I got clear and they put a little piece of paper inside the mold with your name on it, which is nice so you won't lose it. Also, they give you the mold so you can get more made at a discount. I could never use a mouthguard until I started using my custom one.
