New Apple MacBooks

Recommended Posts

Apple, otherwise known as God (in the form of a computer company) has released there newest line of notebooks featuring intel processors, The Macbook. The Macbook Pro was released in March and has been critically aclaimed (so what if they burned people, who puts a LAPtop on their lap anyways?).

The macbooks come with 13.3 inch wide screen GLOSSY displays. I just handeled them one in person, and let me tell you, it is one sexy machine. It feature magnetic closure, which is of course, perfect. Standard ports, and all. A couple cool features are that when you have two fingers on the trackpad, you can scroll through documents or wepages. Also if you have two fingers on the trackpad and click, you right click.

The macbook comes standard with a 2.0 ghz intel core duo processor for 1299 (a 1.83 mhz version is avalible for 1199). They come with 512 mb of ram and a 60gb hard drive. The Hard drive is USER REPLACABLE, which is a great feature for any notebook.

They are avalible in glossy white or matte black (black comes at a premium price). Go meet the entire macbook family below

I don't have the need for a MacBook pro but after they get through some of the fixes and such of a 1G product it will replace my existing iBook, although I can't justify spending $200 to get it in black (even if it is another 20G larger in the hard drive), might as well just go the colorware route at that point

Yeah I'm a big fan of my iBook, and about 7 guys in my dorm have MacBook Pros now. But you mention the two-finger scroll feature like it's new to the MacBook, when the MacBook Pro had it too.

The macbook look really nice! I have to give apple credit. Firstly their trademark white hardware became the coolest thing to have, influencing more colourful releases from competitiors such as the sony Vaios. Now they charge more for black, because black is cool again, and everyone loves it (ok you do get the extra HD space) but i think it's funny.

I'm in a delema for a new lap top for graduation. I was looking at the apple but they are expensive and they have such small tiny screens. I'd love one but I don't think I could get used to a non-windows computer. I'm looking towards an HP Pavilion.

Not nearly as many as PCs though because no one wastes time coding them for Macs.

There has never been a malicious Virus for OS X. The only "virus" was just a proof that it could be done, it did not do anything malicious. The only thing is... You had to download the file (it said it was pictures of the next version of OS X), extract the files (which were .dmg files, not image files), then open the files, then put in your password, then run the files. If you are dumb enough tooo do all of that, you deserve that virus.

Explain to me why they changed to an Intel chip for their laptops.

because they are better??

Intel chips are better than what? You might want to do some research on Intel chips. They are better at marketing, which makes a good fit for Apple products.

Also the reason there is not many malicious viruses, is because the operating system is based off of Unix. It is one of the most stable/secure operating systems because its been around for a long time. Linux would have been a better move for Apple, because I have a feeling the licensing cost for Unix is very high and is what drives up the cost of the laptops.

I heard they went with Intel since their Motorols made chips were lagging in performance.

Btw, if you were looking to run Windows on a laptop, you could with an Apple, they have software coming that can emulate Windows on a Apple. Software is called Bootcamp or something...it's like in the Beta stage right now, it's available but still might have a couple bugs. But it's free too I believe.

Intel chips are cheaper than a RISC processor. It's also cheaper to develop software for because of the less complex instruction set. But they take up more system resources and run a lot hotter than a RISC chip would. Two things that are big drawbacks for a laptop.

actually there's something out there now that isn't Boot Camp (Apple's beta version) in which you have to use one or other (Tiger or Win ) but can run both at the same time..so you can go copy something out of your Access dB in XP and then paste it into your other file running on Tiger ie. need a phone # for something you are doing in Photoshop or something..it was discussed in Pogue's Posts (NYT) and if you had to install use both OS's on your new Mac, was a much better way to do so then having to constantly reboot

Ok, lots of stuf to respond to... The Intel Chips currently in the Macbooks is far supperior to the IBM Power PC chip that had running in the G4. The IBM chip ran hotter, slower, and just was not as good as a chip. The g5 chip ran so hot, they could not put it in a laptop. If you are going to get into an ADM vs. Intel debate, then fine, but Intel beats PowerPC any day of the week.

Your Unix comment is true and not true at the same time. Sure Unix is more secure and is much more rigid than Windows (from the kernel on up) but that does not mean it is immune. If the tables were turned, and apple had over 90% of the market (and used a unix backbone) I am sure there would be hosts and hosts of viruses. Most Apple users access their computer @ root (adiminstrator) meaning that if the computer is comprimised, the comprimisee has root (unlimited) access. Most unix machines run default as root.

Apple Products were expensive before OS X (before they used unix, in other words). Linux, of course, is Unix based.

Bootcamp does NOT allow you to use both operating systems at the same time. It allows you to "dual boot". At startup you have the option of booting into windows or os x. There is no emulation, each operating system is on a completely different partition.

Emulation has been in effect for years on the mac. A little M$ program called Virtual PC. The problem with it was that it was S L O W. The thing that slowed it down was the fact that it had to emulate in software (virtual pc) and also at the processor level. Apples program Rosetta would have to convert the data from what x86 to what the power pc could understand.

I got my words mixed up on the boot camp, meant to say it was one or the other ..

the non-boot camp program I was talking about is not Virtual PC or an emulator, rather it lets your run both OS's at the same time

The New York Times site is running super piano at the moment, or I'd post it..but Pogue wrote about it a few days after the release of Boot Camp and it appears to be a better fit for most if they had to put that crappy OS on a mac

You arent really running both operating systems. Critics forever said that there should be a program in OS X where you can click on an applications (a windows based one) and it just pops up, no need to boot up virtual pc. It would work like the program WINE. WINE is a program for linux that does exactly that. It emulates the operating system flawlessly, and swiftly.

its not virtual though, you can be running OS X and then use a program in XP, but I do think you have to log in/log out but not reboot the computer...

agree with you though that one day it will run in OS X as native apps (most do outside of Access) but we're only a few months into it all
