It's been a couple games where the puck has gone the other way and you are skating with the other team's skater and they either give you a butt end to the face/neck or just hit you when you are skating back. What reaction would you have?

I'd skate away at first and take his number, but then later in the game get him back with a clean hit that knocks him flat on his ass...

what forsberg91 said, hitting them back is the easy way to get hit with a roughing penalty and the other guy get away without a penalty. You don't wanna do something like that to your team.

since I'm just in beer/Sr leagues I just wreck em when i get the chance...my new philosophy is that the amount of things I can do back to someone who is an idiot to a teammate or mine and spend 2 min or less (sometimes we'll just give up a goal right away if it doesn't matter) for it...bring it! I won't initiate stuff..but if you're a dick..I'll get my licks in..

I like to take the number and get him back later...this allows for a couple of things to happen...1) me to think about it and determine if it was realy a cheap shot, or he was just doing his job, and 2) If i decide it was a cheapshot, determine best course of action. For example...this past weekend I was plaing in a tournament and some kid slashed my right leg with his stick blade, actualy cutting my leg and leaving a huge bruise. I decided that was kind of uncalled for, so I took his number, waited a shift or two and then cleaned his clock when he tried coming over the middle with his weak ass toe pull...and the best part is that it was a NARCh event and they never call anything, so I didnt even have to sit for it.

Definately wait, it may make you feel better for getting him straight back, but your team mates will definately not appreciate it. Plus nothing sweeter then pulling off a huge CLEAN hit. If you retaliate then before long you will have a reputation!

I voted for "Take his number and get him later" but there is another option, make him drop his gloves. If you both go for 5, that's OK as long as you get to pound his face in. And it doesn't put your team down a man. But my coach would still be ticked at me, especially if he needed me at the end of the game or whatever, and I was sitting in the sin bin.

I guess you just have to chose the best time to pick a brawl, other than that just take his number and send him to a place "over the hills and far away" with a hit. It's kinda hard for him to skate back and give you cheapshots the second time when he's writhing on the ice in pain. And then your forwards will get an odd man rush up the other end :) life is good.

I'm the only one so far that has voted for "Retaliate with a shot of your own".. I usually don't take much @ 250lbs, but when I do... I dont wait to get back at him. I do admit though, that I will cheap shot him back.. I would rather spear him in the ribs than get 5 minutes and a talking from coach.

I tend to take a little from each of you. If I worry about getting him back for the rest of the game, I'm probably hurting my team. However, if he swings into my radar I'm going to smoke him. Even if it is beer league, a cheap shot is a cheap shot. I won't cheap shot him, it'll be clean, but I promise it will hurt.

wait for the guy in the parking lot? I've had a guy in my beer league challenge me, but then after he was no where to be found.. although one of my friends had a guy waiting for him in the parking lot once and it was gonna happen but I guess the teammates all broke it up and it was nothing more than a bunch of trash talk. another one of my friends once had his tires slashed by a guy he had beef with on another team. thats just lame if u ask me.

If you're throwing down afterwards, you've got more issues than you probably realize.

I'll have to second that one. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. And what happens on the ice, well you get the picture.

thats what I'd like to think.. but you never know, some ppl are crazy.. the rink where my friend got his tires slashed now has a security guard in the parking lot.

I'm a beer leaguer and I would say just get them back later. In men's league you see lot's of stuff behind the play from both teams so you let some things go. But if you get slashed, held, hooked, tripped, slew footed 5 times a game, someone's getting something.

One time we were playing this team and we were getting crowned like 13-4 (by a sandbagging team) and they had this one clown who would celebrate goals by raising his hands and yelling

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was pretty annoying. Anyway after one of his celebrations I said to him. "One of these days that's going to bite you in the A$$" he chuckles out “what are you going to do about it.â€

A couple minutes later I happen upon the puck at center ice and there’s only me and him and the net behind him. A gave him a little toe drag type move between his legs and roofed it then waived my arms and yelled like I won the cup. Slid down on one knee riding the stick in front of their bench. You know the works. He was ticked off. Towards the end of the game their best player (former Chicago Wolves guy playing in a C league) scores a goal in a scrum in front of the net. Nothing nice just a good battle. This clown starts his celebration by going behind our net and around close to the boards. Hands up screaming like a girl at the 15-5 score. As he comes around he gets too close to me and I give him a nice shoulder/elbow to the chops. He flies backward and rocks the glass and crumbles to the ice.

I get no penalty and the ref’s response to the other team’s objection.

"He deserved it"

A cross b/w 'do nothing' and 'take his number'. The most important thing is that my team beats his, so I wouldn't want a personal vendetta to distract me from doing what I need to get my team the W. Still, if I guy cheap shots me, there's a good chance that he's already unhinged and I'll use that to my advantage. He'll know that I won't forget what he did, so he'll expect eventual retaliation. So as long as I don't have to go way out of my way, I'll try to goad the guy into taking a penalty. I do this by playing more pesty-like--being a little rougher in the corners, buzzing close by whenever I'm in his general proximity, constantly lifting his stick, cutting him off when his team is advancing the puck, casually barring my stick in front of him to slow him down, draping my body around him when he's trying to stick handle around me, poke-checking more aggressively, even crashing his goal extra hard and playing to the whistle--just frustrate the guy. The trick is to not look like you're trying so deliberately to get the guy to punch you in the face, so you don't get called for a penalty too.

I'd also make the guy think that I'm looking to decapitate him. Sometimes I'll skate extra aggressively so the guy can hear me coming for him when he goes into the corners. My intention is to have the guy constantly looking over his shoulder for me, believing that I want to hospitalize him, even if I have no intention of actually following through with a hit on that given play. Once again, it can sometimes backfire if the guy totally expects me to come at him hard, he just puts his elbows into my face, and the ref calls nothing because he thinks that I'm lining him up for a possibly illegal charge.

There are ways to make a person not want to celebrate too loudly on stupid plays/give your best centre cheaps shots and other bad stuff.

The very first time their first line comes into your zone, tell your D partener to hang a bit back and just demolish whoever has the puck. If you wind up taking a penalty (sometimes I wonder if the refs think "too violent" is a valid penalty), at least you got it over in the first 2 minutes and you sent a clear message to the other team: you can/will make punks pay for being punks.

..but if you're a dick..I'll get my licks in..

Interesting word choice...

The only times I have gone after a player at that moment was to stick up for a teammate. I have a long temper when stuff is directed at me. But rest assured you will go on my list, permanently. You better hope I forget what you look like.

i would just clock him a good one when the ref isnt looking, ill make sure the ref doesnt see me and ill either get him with a dirty stick check or ill pound him one without getting caught by the ref, over the years ive been good for not getting caught, knock on wood :D
