Yeah, but the Phillies are getting healthy and will probably take the NL East so that leaves it really between the Mess and Braves. They have about 6 games left against the Mets, so maybe the Braves man-up and get in.

And as the rotation goes right now, the Yanks would face Wakefield in both of those series, which is two definite wins

The Sox pushed back Wakefield a day so he can pitch at Tropicana, where he's 8-0 with a 2.33 ERA over his career. He won't start in the series at Yankee Stadium. It will be Dice-K, Beckett and Schilling.

Thats a great record at Tropicana, and even if it was only half that good they probably would have done it to get him out of the Yankee series.

How about Chamberlain yesterday? that kid is just unreal. I keep waiting for him to falter, and he just doesn't. 9 pitches, popout, strike out, strike out. Brutal.

And then you throw Edwar Ramirez out there who has a devastating change up, and you're going from from facing 100mph fastball to 75mph changeup between the two of them. Great 1-2 punch.

I was a bit nervous about the Detroit series, but this Angels series is the real big worry I have before the Sox. Angels always seem to own the Yanks.

and I think Cashman did somehow trade for Gagne, he just gave him a Red Sox jersey and told him to do some damage lol

The real question with the Yanks is if their offense will continue to produce like it has. They've been playing out of their minds lately -- since the AS break, really. Again, if they can keep putting 6+ runs on the board day in and day out, they WILL secure a playoff spot. Who needs starting pitching when you can put tons of runs on the board?

That actually sounds like Texas' philosophy for quite awhile.

They have had pitching though, not dominating, but good enough. Pretty much at this point if they pitch to a 4.50era they'll win most of their games.

The main thing right now is getting Wang in order. Andy's pitched amazing and I have a lot of faith in Hughes. Mussina's a four at this point and will put up good starts here and there but also shitters. The bullpen is the main part though, I'm not putting a ton of weight in Farnsworth's performance but he's pitched really well lately. Then you add in Edwar/Joba/Viz and you have a pretty good bridge to Mariano.

Man, just when Farnsworth was getting some faith back in him, he put up a stinker like last nights. Betemit made an unreal play at first to save that game. If Farnsworth pitched up to his potential, there wouldn't be a better bullpen in baseball. There'd be a couple just as good, but no one better

The thing about the Yanks offense, this is how they SHOULD be. They're not playing above their heads, they're playing how they look on paper. If everyone is on their game, 6 runs is nothing to this lineup

That was horrendous. On the other hand, Pettite looked fantastic last night. And Chamberlain strikes out the side in the 8th, including Vlad on 3 pitches.

Mussina has one more start to prove he's worthy of staying in the rotation or they call up Ian Kennedy

And you know what, losing 18-9 is nowhere near as bad as 30-3... I was certain that was an error when I saw that score scroll across ESPN... that's an ugly blowout in football, forget about baseball

The unfortunate thing about Mussina is he seemed to lose it so quickly and at too young an age -- maybe since around turning 37. I realize he has the occasional start where he pitches great, but from my perspective, I love to see him penciled in at this point. :P

I know from fantasy, Mussina had a monster year last year...his WHIP was like 1.11. Been terrible this year though.

Joba is a monster, I haven't really watched him pitch yet (don't get many Yanks games around here) but his stats are just nasty.

You're right. Last year was a solid year at 15-7 with a 3.51 ERA. It must have been the two previous seasons I was thinking about, because his ERA's were in the mid-4's, while his strikeouts were down significantly.

This year his ERA is 5.22, which is pretty sad to see for a guy who's lifetime ERA is 3.69.

He never regained his velocity after the hamstring injury. That makes me think he's never been fully recovered from it. He was sitting at 87 or so the other night. What's weird is he had four GREAT starts in a row then these two crappers.

Also, mlb.tv is showing last night's Yankees game for free if anyone wants to see Joba. Just go to scoreboard then, go to yesterday, and click mlb.tv above the box score.

2:41 is when Joba comes in.

The thing with Mussina, is that he's a control pitcher. He doesn't have Joba's overwhelming ability, he has a few good pitches that he sets up and locates well. If he can't do that, his last start is what happens

He still needs to sit at about 90 to be effective. Otherwise all of his pitches sit in the same MPH bracket and you don't have to worry about sitting on anything.

7.5 games heading into this series, the yankees need to take at least 2/3 to have a shot at taking the division.

matsuzaka, beckett, schilling against pettitte, clemens, wang. some good pitching going in this series.

It's 8 after tonight's game.

I know to never say never, but I think the Yanks have to sweep to have a legitimate chance. If they sweep, they'll be 5 games back.

Two of three would still leave them 7 back. At that point there would be 28 games remaining. If the Sox went 14-14, the Spankees would still have to go 21-7 to tie.

A sweep could be possible with those match ups I think, the big one will be tomorrow with Beckett and Clemens. The Yanks work Beckett like no one else, but he's been tremendous this year. If Clemens can go 6 and give up just 2, they've got a great shot

Tonight could be interesting too, since the Yanks hit Dice-K great in the beginning of the season, but he's really come into his own as the season progressed

Can't wait for Joba vs Red Sox, round 1

God I hope the Tribe takes the WC spot from one of these chuckleheads.

They're not losing the division, Detroit is way too bi-polar of a team.

I'm also happy that the 105million dollar man has eaten crap against the Yankees this year, even with a 2-1 record. 19.1ip 19h 15er 3hr 8bb 16k

You're right, it's terrible to be a fan of a team two games out of a playoff spot with 30 games left.

Come on, you guys should know how things work up there in Wild Card Nation.

As a fan, you're right, it's always great to have hope. As a team, it's an embarassment to be on the outside looking in when you've spent twice what your main competitors for the WIld Card have.

Hell, with the amount of money they each spent compared to the rest of the league, the Yankees should be on pace for 110+ wins and the Sox for 100+. They've both underacheived this year.
