How often should skates be sharpened?

Recommended Posts

New to the sport, i play about 1-2 times per week. I am not a great skater so i dont know for sure when they get dull. On average how often should i get them done? thanks

I get mine done at one inch, and haven't gotten them sharpened in well over a month, and I really don't see myself getting them sharpened soon.

I do mine every couple of weeks. Whenever I happen to be at my buddy's place where I keep my sharpener. I would suggest getting a stone and going over your edges before every game to make sure they're in good shape.

I've been at around 5/8, though I've used 3/4 in the past. There are close to ten guys using my "house sharpening" and it's a pain in the ass to change my system as it isn't marked. None of those guys will ever go back to 1/2 again.

You really just need to figure out how you like your skates. I prefer mine to be on the sharper side so I get them done every 4-5 skates.

I get mine done every 8-10 skates or so, but i know people that don't sharpen their skates for months at a time, and they are still really good. so i guess its more personal preference than anything else.

I had my blades thermal-tempered at my brother-in-law's machine shop. Increased the strength of the blades and almost double the time between sharpenings. Made them more resistant to the little nicks and burrs that would require using a stone. I'm experimenting with them for the shop. Another company has done some work with the Red Wings and Windsor Spitfires (local area teams for them)

Is there any visual difference after you have this done?

I'd like to get mine done every 6-8 ice times but sometimes during a season I'll go over a month (unless I get a nick or lose an edge or have a buddy do em for free) without sharpening em.

There is no visual difference after thermal temperring, although you could get them etched, which would make them darker in colour.
