Sprung Hockey

Recommended Posts

Rec'd my A7 frames today. If A7s measured 10" axle-to-axle in the past, they've changed - my A7s measure 10 1/4".

If that 10" measurement is mine I lied. The A7s have always had a 10.25" wheelbase. Maybe wishful thinking? I couldn't get them any shorter without the center wheels rubbing against each other going in opposite directions.

I'm so damn pumped for these! I can play hockey just fine but its so frustrating when you can't move like you're used to on ice.... I looked like I could barely skate in skates too big and outdoor wheels on sportcourt haha

WOW. Had my first game with my new Sprungs tonight - I will never skate on another chassis. I could feel such an amazing difference right away, and got used to them fairly quickly. Starts were so much faster, stops were faster, and turns were sharper than ever. These are worth every penny.

Here's my complete set up:

Sprung A7s

Vapor XXV boot (9.5D)

Revision Variant (Bronze, 80mm)

Bones Super Reds

Installation was a little tricky, mostly because I have never done anything like it before. I decided to keep the prongs on the t-nuts, and went with an allen head instead of a phillips. I've stripped too many phillips head screws in my lifetime. I may actually remove the bolts and replace them with rivets at some point (since I know I won't be changing the chassis).

Here are a few bad pictures from my phone:

damn! if only I waited an extra week!!!!!!!!

quick question: no idea about roller, been on ice my entire life.

I just unpacked my frames, and when I went to go throw on a few wheels (to give my guy mounting these some guide for allignment) I realized the that the axle will not fit the bearing I have in my wheels. What exactly do I need to do to fix this?

THanks

I'm sure the 8mm axles fit your bearings just fine, it's your old 6mm spacers that are the problem. You need to get some new 8mm "floating" spacers like these. I had the same issue when I switched to Sprungs.

damn, I am an idiot. Yeah, great... no chance I'll find those around here. IW shipping sucks, they take like a week. I just want to use these!

Also, tips on how to remove the spacers without an actual skate tool. I have a ton of tools here, just nothing specifically used for skates

Find a philips screwdriver or allen key that is smaller than the bearing's inner diameter (8mm) & larger than the spacer's inner diameter (6mm) & use it to "punch" the spacer & opposite side bearing out. Be careful you don't stab yourself, & depending on the shape of the tool, you may bugger up the old spacers a bit, but you won't be needing them anymore, anyway (unless you planned to use them on some other skates).

well gentlemen, first night with the sprungs on my Vapor XX's and I have mixed emotions.

In terms of the feel and performance they're unreal, they give you some pretty sharp turns and quick starts. A very nice transition from ice.

Negatives:

They feel a tad flimsy. I am 220lbs and if I made a quick move in the skate it felt as if the wheels were sticking (super sticky wheels) and the frame was bending a lot. I am not sure if my guy at pure hockey installed these incorrectly but they bent a little too much for my liking. Is this my weight? or am I just not an experienced roller hockey player. There are two copper rivets in the rear, my installer said if they feel loose he could throw some coppers up front, do you think this might be the issue?

Any chance you're mistaking wheels that are too soft for the frame bending? I've never been on Variants, but I think you should be on bronze rather than gold. My weight fluctuates between 205 and 215, 78A Hornets have always been plenty sticky. Again, I don't know how Variants play - but I'd think you should be on a 76A wheel at minimum.

I have golds in the front / back and bronze in the middle. Maybe, but I can actually see the frame torque when I flex my foot when standing still. Like at a point where I am worried these won't last long for me

If you're talking about a side to side movement, that's an unavoidable characteristic of the frame, given the multiple pivot points (@ arm & wheel axles) of the design. Every skate frame is going to have some play at the wheel axles, some more than others due to variations in the chassis, axle, spacer, wheel, & bearing tolerances. Add to that the small bit of lateral play you get in the pivot point where the arms mount, & you get a noticeable flex. In my experience, this is a non-issue, as I've been running my A7's for over 6 months now, & the only time I even notice the play/flex in the frames is when I'm standing still, or moving extremely slow.

As a 260 lb skater who primarily plays defense (blocking lots of shots) I assure you, these frames are tough SOB's.

For the record I loved my XX's + Sprung setup. Despite how good my current ONE90's are, the XX's were the first decent boot I managed to wack a sprung onto. Lots of love for the ice time and inline time on those beauties.

Thanks for chiming in! I'm pretty new to the sport after being on ice for the 18 years... glad to know that this is normal!

We are sold out of A6s!!!! There are some replacement arms, and more will come in the next shipment from China, but all A6 parts will return to their original prices. This is sort of like when we only had A6s and no A7s and A8s, but better, because the A7 and A8 have stronger parts and are much harder to break. And they fit more players. The A6X has been on the side (it's like that with indie companies like us) while we did other things, but it's moving up now. It will have some tuffassknuckles. ;)
