My cousin builds computers. He built me one and I guess it's alright, but it could be much better. Nether the less, it get's the job done.

80 GB Hard Drive

1 GB Memory

I've upgraded all the cards like the sound, video cards and USB and firewire slots.

17 Inch Acer Monitor.

Altec Lansing speakers except I hooked up 2 10" Pioneer Premier subs to it.

52x DVD/CD Burner

I really only use this computer for my iPod and screwing around with programs I'lve downloaded. I do the odd homework on it to.

AMD Opteron 170

DFI motherboard (wow I feel retarted for not remembering...)

ATi X850XT PE

1gb Mushkin Redline, stable to 1.5-2-2-11 (final digit is high due to better latencies when set there on AMD, and yes, that is a 1.5 CAS latency, that is insane)

M-Audio ReVolution 7.1 sound card

440gb of hard drive space

HP Lightscribe burner

Coming soon: Either Dual core, or SLI Alienware notebook...

Hahaha, it beats my grandmother's last computer. Some HP pos that had an Athlon K6-II at, I think, 350mhz, had 64mb of ram, and a 6gb hdd, oh, and no standalone videocard.

Oh, we're putting monitors as well? In that case:

19" Viewsonic, 2ms refresh rate. Hate that the max res. is only 1280x1024...

Wow, that is a monster setup. Why not more ram though?

One reason: He wants to run a 1T command rate on the memory as Intel systems need large amounts of memory bandwidth to compensate for the Too-long pipelines on the processor. This is at the expense of generic latencies, such as cas, ras to cas, etc.

Other reason: He didn't expect to need it when he built the system.

And his graphic cards take away any "mega" rating it merited. Oh, and it's not AMD, and this past generation, AMD was king. (Yes, in all aspects.)

looks like you are describing a macbook

Since he's not doing anything productive with it, I'd have to agree with you.

you got balllllls. These days, windows PCs are less usefull than Macs. A Mac can run anything, a windows pc... cant.

All I'm going to be doing is internet, chat, downloading music and typing papers. I'm not in an architect or graphics program or anything like thatwhere i'm going to need a super monster PC to run those types of programs. Business major, pretty much all about writing papers.

I would like something that runs fast though, but I've never used a mac before..
