Finally going from tblades to tuuk customs. PICS!

Recommended Posts

I made a topic about this a few months ago, but I cant find it anymore. Anyways, I finally took the plunge and am going back to traditional steel. I played around in some bauer XX's and I loved the feel of the tuuk holders. They felt very solid on the ice and was planning on getting my tblades replaced off of my Salming F1's. I would just buy a new pair of bauers, but I really really really like my salming boot and its perfectly broke in/molded around my foot right now.

Anyways, I went to my hls and the storeowner tried convincing me to go with ccm pro-lites, but I am not a big fan of the ones on my tacks right now. I didn't want lightspeeds either so I settled for the custom+'s.

I will pick them up tomorrow on my lunch break and take some pictures.

BK - I actually did the same thing about a month ago. Loved the F1's fit on my feet (couldn't find anything else that would fit me the same way) but I didn't like the feeling of being back on my heels all the time.

My LHS (proshop) didn't know what I was talking about when I asked for heel lifts. :( so I decided to buy different holders. Luckly, HG had a good deal on Mission's.

What I decided to do was to put Pitch 3's (stolen from my Missions) on my Salmings. In neutral, I still felt like I was back on my heels. In +1, they feel perfect. Very happy I made the switch. Still trying to figure out the optimal hollow but I'm getting there...

I just got them back.

So far so good.. Theres a dropin session tonight, so I can test them out.

Anybody know the pitch on them? The XX's that I skated on felt like my old prolites (compared to my tblades). I'm not sure if the xx's were stock or if they had heel lifters.

They look weird with Customs, but that is the way to go, I can't see much of a future in T-blades anymore, at least for getting skates that retail with them on.

Anybody hear or think different?

I glad I'm not the only person here doing that! I was waiting to get my Salmings back from my skate guru to send the pics in, but you guys beat me to it. I've been skating on a new pair of 852s I bought on closeout, but they still don't fit my feet like the Salmings did. Of course, I'm going the cheap route and using some CCM Prolight holders I bought on Ebay for $10. They should be done any day now!

I'm surprised nobody brought up the problem with the holes matching up. I think I posted a while ago that some of the holes needed by my Prolights (or the Tuuks I tried) were close but not quite matching with the pre-existing holes. I was worried about the composite outsold cracking with a bunch of holes so close together. I ended up filling all the holes with epoxy putty, then putting a single layer of fibreglass on the entire outsole. Maybe it overkill, but at least it SHOULDN'T crack. I might end up putting heel lifts on as well. I put them on my 852s and they feel much better. JR filled me in how to make them, and they work great!

Ok, heres a first skate review.

First off, if you are ever in the Provo area, please avoid Crazy Canuck like the black plauge... I had NOTHING but a bad experience from this shop.. Why?

1. Costed an arm and a leg $100 plus tax. Checked play it again, they charge $65.

2. One of my riviets came out... yup. 1 day.

3. Took them into another shop to get repaired and not only did the guy from crazy canuck put in a bad rivit, he also drilled the hold at an angle, making it hard to put in a new rivit. The shopkeeper couldn't get it done in the pro shop so I have to drop them off at his shop tomorrow for repair.

4. He didn't even sharpen my skates.. I mean, honestly.

5. After all this, I strap on my skates and they felt weird.. like they didn't fit anymore. I took them off, looked inside and the insoles were in the wrong skates (left one was in the right and so on).

Jr or Chadd.. wanna move to Utah? The girls here are cute and theres a nice pro-shop at the rink waiting for you to move into!!

Anyways, back to the skate.

The first thing I noticed was how solid I felt on the ice. I put my skate down and I felt the ice.. evey little nick and crack. I got the same cut as my tblades, but I felt like I had to push harder for the same amount of thrust. I also felt like I had "suspension" with my tblades. They really do give a little when you are pushing off, the tuuks are solid. Right now, laying it bed, I can feel my knees aching a little bit from having to work a little harder. On an upnote, I like the feel in my turns. I can turn JUST as tight with these, but I really feel like I have a little more control in my turns and crossovers. All in all, im satisfied with my purchase.

Now, im not going to say that tblades suck or that tuuks were a bad investment. They both have their ups and downs and I would be happy with either on my boot.

Hmm, maybe I could do some consulting and help out. I'm not sure my wife would like the idea of the cute girls but I could just add a couple more on right? I mean it is Utah. ;)

:P

We have alcohol here.. Its just watered down to rootbeer caliber, but they claim its still booze.

Any suggestions about the rivit/crooked hole? I'm taking to a friend's shop today (old equipment manager) to see if he can work his magic.

Just curious, but what made you decide on Customs and not Lightspeeds?

Price.

LHS wanted $149.99 for them <_<

My wife wouldn't let me drop that kind of money on MY skates.

That's because part of it is HER money. :)

I had Lightspeeds put on my F1s (shhhhh, don’t tell my wife!), but after the conversion, the fit seems to have changed. That is, they used to be very comfortable and solid feeling (toe tickeling the end cap and boot feeling snug all around), but now my right heal slips up-and-down so much that every time I skate in them I get a nasty quarter-sized blister on the inside-rear of my right heal. I tried wearing two socks (a thin “skate†and a thicker regular) sock. It helped a bit, but I already had a blister starting so my heal got munched again.

So, I’ve got two questions:

1) Badkitty, Hoquyguy, or anyone else who’s had F1s modified, did you notice any change in fit?

2) JR, is it possible/likely changing holders could change the fit, or might there be something else going on?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated because right now the F1 are on the shelf and I’m back in my too-wide 2090s :(

I had almost the same problem.

My boots didn't fit right anymore. They weren't loose or tight, but just didn't feel right on my feet.

I am going to rebake mine tonight and see if that does the trick.

I hope the baking works well for you!

I didn't want to do a regular bake on mine because they were already too big in the heal, so (per another post somewhere here on MSH) I tried heating them and putting the heals in a vise. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to help much if any.

This post makes me thank god I have an amazing LHS 10 minutes from my house, there is no way i would let a hole in the wall shop change holders for me. It's not easy, at all.

If you don't find a better solution, try this. I did this once on skates that gave me blisters on the sides of my heels and it did the trick. Get a piece of smooth shiny tape (I used the kind of tape for taping my hockey socks, or wide cellophane tape could work) a bit bigger than 1" square, and stick it on the inside of your skate where the blister occurs. That way, when your heel moves a bit , the sock will slide on the tape instead of your foot rubbing on the sock. It may not be the ideal solution but at least if it works you won't have to throw those skates away.

I'm STILL waiting for my skates to get done, but since it's free (or almost free), I'm not complaining. As for the skates not fitting the same, I'll let you know when I get them back. I do know that the heel and ankle padding were pretty thin on the Salmings to begin with. I don't know how a holder can change the fit of the boot, but maybe it has something to do with the change in balance point. With T-blades, you were back on your heels, though now maybe you're on your toes more and that moves your ankle. Try rebaking or a pair of superfeet insoles. You can even try a cheap pair of generic insoles. I bought a pair of drug store memory foam insoles for my son's skates for $5.00, and they fixed his sizing problem pretty well. He's in between sizes 5.5 and 6, and the insoles filled the gaps. I tried a pair of them in my skates, but they made them much too tight. Maybe they would do the trick for your problem.

If the problem is being caused by the balance point, you could always have the blades profiled. The tuuks have a ön your heels" feel to them too tho, iirc.

Thanks for all the ideas guys!

That’s an interesting observation about the balance point. Actually, the slippage is constant, but it is worst when using the toe of the skate to do backward C-cuts.

I think I’m going to do the following (listed in decreasing order of ease and increasing order of desperation):

1) See if the LHS that installed the holders will put them through their CCM FIT system

2) I have Shock Doctor insoles, but maybe the memory-foam insoles will take up more space, so I’ll give that a try

3) As a last ditch effort to try and control the slipping (instead of live with it) I was thinking of molding (and gluing in) some heal inserts. I was thinking of making them out of a two-part Silicone Rubber called “Dragon Skin†that is used for special-effects models (saw it on Myth Busters)

4) I have some leading-edge propeller tape, which is smooth, and VERY strong, so I’ll try that if I can’t control the slipping

5) If none of the above works… accept defeat, cry in my beer, burry my beloved F1s, and buy a pair of 5K pumps so I can adjust how my heal is held.

Again, thanks for all the help.

That really does not make any sense. Swapping holders won't change the overall fit of the boot. Mismount, that's another story. How long did you skate in them before you did the swap?

I skated in them about 6-8 times (1 to 1.5 hours each time) with the T-Blades, and had no fit issues. After I had the lightspeeds Installed, I had a blister developing ½ hour into the first skate. Since the swap I’ve skated in them 5 times; only once did I come away without a blister.
