What are the odds of making the show

Recommended Posts

i listened to dave poulan from Notre Dame talk about chances of US players making NCAA Div 1 Hockey programs. On scholarship basis... he put it this way. there's 60 schools giving our scholarships each year, roughly. at that, they may have 5 spots to give on average. so we are talking 300 kids get a full ride. of that, a great number of the incoming players are canadian, so lets even cut the number in half for US players. that 1/2 is probably nowhere near correct, but for these purposes it can work(i don't remember his figure on this part). so 150 US players, out of how many 17-21 year old players are out there. the percentage of making college is slim and none, and the chances there are better then making the show.

Dude, come on......honestly....none of us on here are getting in. Just keep pretending there are scouts in the stands during drop in hockey like so so so many people do. I mean according to all of them, everyone has a chance! Case in point.....dumb question!

PS.....I know people are going to rape me over that comment, so I say in advance, I am just trying to get kicks and giggles out of you all.

Usually on this board, we try to at least respect the person who is asking a questoin. Even if it is a dumb question, a newer member should not be calling him on it.

My daughter has figured she has a pretty good shot at making the Olympic Womens team... IF she continues to work really hard, we move to Italy, I find and marry a nice Italian man and we get citizenship. There's what, 400 total registered female players in Italy?

I think she'd best come up with plan B...LOL

Yeah, it is really hard to make the show.

Also, things happen really quickly, so you have to do your stuff when you are pretty young (15 or so) to be noticed to get into the leagues that actually get scouted.

But the stats are no reason to not try. If you have size, a knack for scoring, good vision on the ice, grit and determination, no fear, etc, it is worth while to try for it!

If you have size, can you skate? If not, run, do not walk, to your local figure skating instuctor and get 2 summer's worth of lessons on edge work, balance, etc.

Also, live in the gym until you believe you were born squatting.

If you have the knack for scoring, work on determination, deking, getting off your shot in 1/10 th of a second, vision, skatingon one leg backward while getting hit and still getting the shot off, etc.

If you have grit and strength, go on that. Find the local boxing gym and pound some heavy bags every night. Get some judo training so you are strong on your skates. Learn all the tricks of the trade.

In other words really get great at your one or two talents, and get ok on the other stuff. Then show up at some good training camps and try to make the team. You make a good team, like a major junior club, then the NHL scouts will be there watching! Go for it.

How many players are in the Canadian Hockey League combined, OHL, WHL, QMJHL? How many get drafted? There are only seven rounds now. How many get a sniff as a free agent tryout? How many players now come from Europe that get drafted? The odds are staggering.

You can always play in lower level minor leagues if you have talent. Working your way up is extremely tough. There is a player in my building who went from high school hockey, made Boston University as a freshman walk-on, played all four years at BU as third line, played last year in UHL, and now is going to ECHL with a contract for this coming season. He is still a long shot to continue up the ladder, but more power to him for not giving up on the dream.

Try making the OHL first or Jr and gettin a scholly. God knows thats hard enough but it can be done with hard work. I never had any scouts at my minor hockey games, just a few Tier 2 scouts and I just went to open tryouts for teams and worked my ass off and managed to make a team. From there just keep working hard and trying to improve and hopefully you will earn ice team and impress someone. If that fails move to Japan, get citizenship and try out for their national ice hockey team and maybe get to play in the world championships AGAINST nhlers. Not quite the same but would still be an awesome experience.

Japan moved down last year to the B group.

First year, without the Asia rule too..... (i.e. first year they could actually be eliminated)

And theres no way they'll ever advance to the A-group again. So you're best bet is to have talent and move to Italy if you want to go that route.
