Standard vs Tapered

Recommended Posts

Yes...I did a search, but found mostly info on tapered vs OPS.

I've been using a Montreal Nitro as my main stick and am really liking it. I feel I got a better shot with it as compared to my wooden sticks and cheapo Easton Octane shaft. But would my shot be pretty close as using the Nitro or a tapered shaft as compared to a higher end shaft like an Ultra Lite or ZBubble? I'm a low level adult leaguer, with a decent shot, but defintely not outstanding so idk if I could tell minute differences. Mostly looking at standard shafts cause buying OPS and having them break isn't the greatest and finding tapered blades with my curve and at a decent price isn't great either.

I like to use a shaft with a wood blade. I find standard gives me better puck feel, likely because there is more wood involved. Tapered will put more velocity on my shot, but at the expense of feel, so I stick with standard.

I've never tried a Z Bubble as I think that tries to give you the best of both worlds, but I hear they break easily so I stick with my UltraLight.

Good luck.

Ultra Lite or if you can find them, the Grip Lites. Maybe I'm just superstitious but I can't stand the Ultra Grips or whatever they're calling them now.

Same here.. too much like the early synergies that rubbed off.

It's nice to see some companies listen to people on this board but apparently we're on Easton's s-list because people always lobby for a better grip. Being back home, I dug out the old "MM" Z-Bubbles and wanted to cry when I realised the grip on those sticks will never be produced again.

Personally, I find that tapered shafts give me the best performance and I never noticed the slightest difference in puck feel between standard or tapered shafts with a wood blade. The only standard shaft that I thought was even close to a tapered shaft was the Bauer tri flex gold (vapor X) shaft.

How big would you describe the performance? I find I got a pretty quick release, would going back to a standard kill that, and would it knock some power off my shot?

You should see it on release more than overall power.

I find that with a standard shaft I can lean into the shot a little more, so the shot feels a little more powerfull but with a touch slower release. With the taper I find the release quicker, and it takes less to load the shaft, but it also does feel a touch less powerful at times. I duno maybe its all in my head, but thats IMO.

I just wish more/a company/s would make really low standard hosel blades (similar to a tapered blade but standard) and extra long standard shafts, so you could really test the difference between the two! It can be a hard comparsion when you have to totally different hosel sizes?

I agree. I'm tired of these 48" standard shafts with (relatively)long hosel blades. Give me a 52" standard shaft with a short hosel and include a carbon fiber butt end for the tall people!
