x-box 360

There are a lot of problems with the 360 but if you put in an effort to prevent them it will make it worthwhile. Most of the scratched disks are from people standing their xbox vertically and I think the disk stabilizers really suck laterally so the disk wobbles and scratches if moved too much. For stopping some other problems just make sure it is in a well ventilated area. I"ve had mine since the Christmas after it came out and still no problems so I guess it depends. As for games Microsoft has way better and more exclusive games then the PS3.

Be careful with judging quantity more important than quality. GOW 3, MGS4, GT5, Sony is getting their house in order. Rumor is the 80gb model is replacing the 40@ $399 and they are looking at a price drop next yr. GT 5 bundle eh...

Like I've said for a while, the PS3 owns the future, but xbox owns the now. MS's window is rapidly shrinking though. They need to pull a rabbit out of their hat soon. PS3 has outsold 360 by a bit this yr. The whirling about MS trying to buy a license for blu-ray still hasn't died down.

Saying PS3 owns the future is far from true. They may be getting off they're asses finally with some decent games, and even if they sold a couple more consoles this year, 360 has absolutely MURDERED ps3 in sales in the past and I cant see any game or fancy features helping them sell 9mil more units just to break even with MS. Live is amazing and getting better in the next year, and also there is a spectacular lineup of great games coming out easily on par with PS3's upcoming games. The fact that people buy 360 regardless of the previous hardware issues should be enough to prove the better gaming system out there.

Consider how badly the PS3 was hurt by its excessive price. That was the #1 factor by far. It's going to be impossible for people to turn down an 80gb ps3 at 349 next yr vs a 299 xbox 60gb, no blu-ray, wifi etc and MS knows it. Why do you think their R&D team is working on the next version?. Xbox 720 or whatever it will be called might hit before 2011, while Sony is going all the way with the PS3. Their technology and investment was based on the long haul. Their biggest oversight by far was the PSN.

I saw this topic in the search and thought I would just ask a question. I bought a 360 yesterday, and it doesn't come with the hard drive. Does a 360 come with any memory space, all i will need it for is MLB 2K8 and NHL 09 when it comes out for now. If not, is it necessary to buy a hard drive or will a memory card work. And finally, what are the A/V cords? Audio/Video? and if so are they same cords as the original X-Box? Thanks in advance?

Also, how much roughly for a hard drive if necessary?

Please, don't waste your money on an Xbox 360. Unless you also intend to purchase a PS3 or a handful of 360's, you will end up regretting the hell out of it in a year or two. I'm not saying it doesn't have a great game line up or wonderful online capability, the hardware is just too flawed at this point. If you've gotta have one, try to wait until next yr when a much improved revision will be released, supposedly cutting failure rates to 5-10%.

not to sound like an a$$hole but that is completely dumb. i respect your opinion but X-BOX 360 has been out for years now...all the bugs are fixed. I have had a 360 for 2 years now and have had no problems. The red ring of death is a hardware failure and all of the new systems made after July 2007 has had the new hardware so they can not get the red ring of death... trust me im a video game geek lol :P

Please, stop lying, teenage fanboy. You just blew any credibility you had here with that crap. Let me give you the numbers. Approximately 25% of Falcons are failing, in a year since that revision came out. MS even stated Falcon wasn't designed to address the RROD. If you don't believe me, google it. I've heard so many people complaining in person (worked at Blockbuster) about 360's scratching up all their disks, randomly dying, and many other unnecessary problems. If you want the headaches, go ahead, but don't complain to me or anyone else when it rips you up. Weigh the pros and cons objectively. Make your own decision. Don't listen to teenagers and fanboys.

360: Pros: Better game selection, more online features, easier to buy/trade games. Cons: Serious reliability issues and headaches.

As for PS3's, I own one but don't play it much currently. Hockey and law take up most of my time. It's cheaper to upgrade the HDD,you can run Yellow Dog Linux, you get free PSN (online), built in blu ray, low failure rate. Cons: Lack of network features, mediocre choice of games, costs more, is hard to find used/pre owned games. The guy is a prospective buyer, tell him both sides of the story, don't kiss Microsoft's rear-end.

What does being a teenager have to do with anything? and also this "fanboy" owns a PS3 PSP PS2 and i actually love Sony. And all i said was that i haven't had a problem with mine. Obviously you are the fanboy...yea you did give it credibility but turned right around and said X-BOX is is unreliable. It's not...Do you own one?? But forget it...you have your opinions and i have mine.

For the record, I prefer PC gaming. You said "they can not get the RROD", which is fanboy bs and misleading potential customers. Every prospective buyer also has the right to know that the XBOX 720, as it's being called atm, is slated for 2011. MS has a long history of sticking it to their customers. Hasn't anyone here bought valid copies of their OS'es and needed support only to be told sure, for $90? Good Luck, Chuck. People waiting 4-8 weeks for 360 repairs aren't uncommon. I had a friend who bought one but wouldn't play games on it because of he hadn't bought an extended warranty and couldn't afford to replace it...

Do I love Sony? No, I love zero companies. What sucks about Sony? They're slow as hell, console costs too much and don't have their finger on the pulse of today's gamers. Not to mention a clunky PSN and overly expensive games. The objective truth is MS had a 6-7 yr window the the 360 and it shows. They long ago projected profitability with their 3rd xbox and are hurrying to get to that point. Sony is willing to play a waiting game and that frustrates the hell out of some people while others like that. I'm not trying to influence anyone directly, just laying out the verifiable facts so they can make an informed decision instead of something based on misleading hype. The PS3 is arguably a long-term investment and nobody knows if it will prove to be good or bad. 360's are basically a shorter term gaming solution.

Shorter term? I've had mine for 2 years and you say it won't be replaced until 2011 - so we're talking like 5 years of gaming from the 360. That's a long time in my mind in the world of technology. If MS had a new console in 2009 or 2010 I'd be all over it because the technology changes so fast.

You make it sound like rolling out the 720 in 2011 is a bad thing but can you imagine how kick ass that machine is going to be by then, how amazing the games and the online will be? If PS3 is trying to compete with that for years to come I think Sony is going to suffer another major ass kicking like they are now by being late and too pricey with their current offering. And I'm not a Sony hater or MS fanboy, I just look at what they both offer, and unless the Blu Ray is a big deal to someone (which it isn't to me) I don't see what advantage PS3 has at all.

When I say short term, I'm referring to product life cycle. Sony had a 10 yr plan for the ps2 (still making new games and selling a ton of PS2's) and a 15 yr plan for the ps3. The PS3 sales now approximately equal the ps2 sales at the same time in that machine's life span. The 360 has a 6-7 yr life cycle, customers are expected to upgrade much sooner. The 360's aren't long term in the same sense. What you'll probably see is as follows: the PS3 will have several price cuts, probably to around $250 by 2010/11, and by then an expansive lineup as programming for the cell has recently become much easier (you'll see that as the PS3 versions of Madden and NHL09 are fully equal to 360 versions). That 120gb PS3 at $249 will be competing with the Xbox 720 at $399/499 or whatever. Sony made a real long term investment in the ps3, the PS3 is the culmination and zenith for their foreseeable future, while the 360 is merely another MS stepping stone. The ironic thing is processing power by 2010/2011 will largely consist of more, not faster, cores. You'll be looking at 16/32 cores @3-4 ghz on 32nm cpus. The thing is MS doesn't really care about the current 360 failures because it's not their main plan. They only extended to the 3 yr warranty when the threat of billion dollar class action lawsuits was brought to them by internal counsel.

Sony is now (or will soon be) offering downloadable movies and tv shows, and has integrated in game XMB, trying to finally catch up with the Xbox live network. If you want to go with the 360, go ahead. Objectively speaking however, it's further ahead in its life cycle, and will have to be replaced sooner. It lacks integrated wifi and the regular dvd built in allows for piracy. If you don't believe me, google it. I'm just the messenger...

Oooooh man, as much of an impartial party I am on the whole XBox 360 vs. PS3 debate.....

I bought a new 50" Vizio today. Bring it home, hooked up my 360 Elite..... hardware failure!!

Thanks to my replacement plan from Best Buy, I will be swapping out for my FIFTH 360 console! I would be exchanging for a PS3, but my fiancee likes all the XBox Live Arcade games.

welcome to the 5 club

It's crazy.... but at the same time, that $90 replacement plan has obviously saved me a bundles-worth to go and buy a new TV! I mean, c'mon Microsoft... I've used up all the fingers on one hand. 5 Consoles.... and you're up to 5 consoles too, Race4LastPlace? 10 XBox 360 consoles between 2 people. No wonder Best Buy hates me.

If I had to mail any of the consoles in, I would have jumped ship on the 360 a long time ago.

Can anyone confirm or deny that RROD is more common in 360's that are run standing upright. I have a friend who said everyone he knows who has had it die ran theirs upright.

Not sure about that, but you do get more read disk errors when it is upright...the drive doesn't have 4-way bumpers to hold the CD in place so it shifts when upright.

I don't trust upright either way, flat is the way to go regardless of any RROD claims. Upright systems don't fit in entertainment centers for shit, as well, I don't get why the fad went that way, give me a front load flat system any day.

Yeah it definitely doesn't matter a whole lot if its upright or not when getting the red ring of death but as said before it does scratch disks like crazy. If the xbox is put in a pretty well ventilated area it helps out a lot with making the lifetime on your xbox longer. I am probably just lucky but my xbox is just over 3 years old and is still working fine.

Yeah, I think I was choking the XBox where I had it. Not enough ventilation, need to figure out a better spot.

Isn't the RROD caused by overheating and the motherboard warping and essentially breaking off the solder points?
