Recommended Posts

Hey just wondering if you guys have any words or slangs that they use in different countries.

I'am perticulary interested in slangs around the texas/lousiana area.

Post up any words that they say alot around were you live.

Example:

Canada:"EH"

USA:"HUH"

As far as Louisiana, it kinda depends on which part of the state you're talking about. New Orleans and the southeastern part of the state have their own distinct accent and slang, while the rest of the state generally has more of the slang patterns of the rest of the south.

Also, you know you're from the south when you form the second person plural possesive of "y'all" as, "y'all's'es" ;)

in the north dirty and discusting in a good way are pretty popular. "yo those skates are dirty", "ovechkin's discusting".

Yea, a kid around here talks alot like that, but not many others do. He sounds like an idiot when he says things are "raw", and "nasty" in a good way. Try to tell him that that talk was over in the 80's.

There's a guy who plays on my Men's League team who's originally from South Africa. He uses the phrase "stuffin'", "stuff" or "stuff off" all the time...based on the context he uses it in I gather it's basically their version of f$@k.

Northern US/Canada: "Buddy" = Southern States: "Partner" or "Paht-nah" West Coast = "Bro" or "Brah" = Australia: "Mate"

Add "Bud" to "Buddy" as well.

There is a difference in beverages and food:

When you order "tea" in Canada it is ALWAYS served hot - if you actually WANT iced tea, that's what you order.

The first time a Canadian, traveling in the States, is asked if they want "sweet tea", they have absolutely no idea what that is. (ice tea with sugar).

A "burger and chips" in Canada means you'll get french fries on the side - in some parts of the States it'll be potato chips.

Carbonated sugar water otherwise know as Coke or Pepsi can be problematic too. In Canada it is "pop" and "soda" is specifically a soda water. Which resulted in a "twilight zone" experience trying to get a Coke at a burger stand in Pennsylvania:

Me: "What kind of pop do you have?"

Her: "What?

Me: "What kind of pop do you have?"

Her: "Huh?

Me: "What kind of pop do you have?"

Her: turns to another person - "She wants to know what kind of pop (as in DAD) I have???!!!"

Other person: "oh nooo, she means SODA!"

Her: "oh, do you want a soda?"

Me: "No, I don't want Soda, I want to know what types of pop you have"

Me & Her: stare at each other in complete puzzlement

We had a good laugh once we got it sorted out!!

In Atlanta & a lot of the south, when you want a soda/pop/soft drink, it's a Coke. Even if it's Pepsi, it's a Coke.

But to your request on Louisiana...there are cultural idioms like "making groceries" instead of shopping for them, and "yeah, you right" among others. But even more interesting to me is the Acadian culture and language!

There is also the horrible "I'm fixing to go to the store."

It's not really slang, but in the South your Is are pronounced like Es. My wife's from NC and somehow manages to make my name three syllables.

In PA the big one I notice is whenever someone's going somewhere it called "goin' down". "Whatcha' doin this weekend? Goin' down the shore?" And every ow is an ah (the PA dutch slang). It gets real bad down in Lancaster though.

I hate it when people say "cowboy up".

Unless you are in Texas, Oklahoma, Montana, Wyoming, Calgary and maybe Colorado...that phrase would be totally out of place.
